The fourth beta of iOS 26.1 includes an option to turn off the Lock Screen swipe that activates the camera, a feature that iPhone users have been wanting for years.

In the Camera section of the Settings app, there's a Lock Screen Swipe to Open Camera setting, and turning it off disables the feature where you can swipe left to open the camera.

The iPhone has long allowed users to open the Camera app directly from the Lock Screen with a swipe, but it can be a setting that's easy to activate, and it provides a way for someone that gets ahold of an iPhone to use it to take unwanted photos.

There was previously no way to turn off Lock Screen camera activation without disabling the camera app entirely.

Awesome. I was on the phone with support just a couple weeks ago about this (and some other camera questions), and while there is a workaround in the accessibility section - this is what I have wanted for a very long time.
Great feature!

I've always hated this "feature." It's also on the iPad, which makes no sense. The fact that you can do this without unlocking someone else's phone is insane. For example, you can literally take a coworkers phone, take an inappropriate picture and have that go into his gallery/iCloud. So stupid!!!

Yeah but now I'm accidentally launching the camera with the Camera Button! There's probably a way to turn that off, I haven't checked.

Yes, finally!!! Now with my new 17 pro I love the camera button (the swipes are dumb but the quick access is incredible), I removed camera shortcuts from my Home Screen dock, my control center, my action button, my lock screen buttons and now the swipe too. So much real estate I can now use for other things!

what's the workaround?
accessibility, touch, tap or swipe to wake - turn it off. The downside is that you'll have to press the side button to wake the phone up, but I can live with that vs accidentally taking photos and videos ...
Most of the time I pick the phone up to unlock so don't have to do the side button too often, but I will turn it on again with this new toggle
