Also, it's worth pointing out that checkra1n didn't survive a reboot either — tethered jailbreaks are nothing new. I agree with you that unlimited sideloading shouldn't be called a jailbreak

Yeah I forgot checkra1n was tethered, it’s definitely been too long

on the bright side the lack of persistent jailbreaks that rely on hardware vulnerabilities goes to show how solid the platform is security wise

Don't you need a jailbreak to side-load? Genuine question, I have no idea.

If you have a developer account you can just sideload whatever you want, even dabble in piracy if you’re so inclined

This has always been the case since the iPhone SDK

If you don’t pay for a developer account however it’s very inconvenient, requiring you to “renew” your sideloaded apps every seven days

There’s tools to automate this process but I believe there’s also a limit of how many apps you can have at the same time

Of course there’s also online services that will sign any ipa with a questionable corporate certificate and let you install apps directly on your phone, they usually charge something like 20 bucks a year for the privilege

There’s also websites that offer pre signed apps you can install directly from your phone but these usually don’t last long because Apple revokes these certificates for violating TOS

Tl;dr: you don’t need to jailbreak to sideload apps but it’s not as convenient or cheap to do it that way

Ones of the biggest reasons I'd want to jailbreak is to customize my home screen's icons. I'm so tired of the same giant rounded square icons and not being able to resize/add more rows and columns. THERE IS SO MUCH WASTED SPACE. The restrictions on icon and widget sizing on home screens is honestly baffling in 2026.

And for those saying there's no reason to jailbreak anymore, I still sideload modified versions of YouTube and social media apps that basically give you all premium features and remove all tracking/ads/unnecessary bloatware from them.

You can install third-party keyboards without jailbreaking.

I gave up back in like iOS 8 or 9 when it was first available, and it was frustratingly hobbled compared to default keyboard. The most annoying was the inability to do voice to text without having to switch back to default all the time and I got tired of it.

Has it improved since then? Maybe it’s worth a shot.

I did just get a pro max and the larger keyboard has helped tremendously, with less mistyped letters that on the 14pro would lead to iOS correctly the words automatically to something completely out of context. I’m happy now, but still remember how horrible it was on the 14pro size.

I do not see the point in jailbreaking anymore. It's been ten years since I did any jailbreaking and 12 since I jailbroke my daily driver.

This is more amusing than interesting. What is there left to do in jailbreaking than theft?
