You can't even use it where you can use passport cards (a separate thing you can get that lets you pass certain border checkpoints, but not for use in international air travel).
I'm just commenting to emphasize that the passport card is cheaper than a full passport, and it's handy for those of us who live near the Canada or Mexico border and want to drive across, or if you're going on a cruise in the Caribbean. And it works for domestic flights.

Who doesn’t like collecting passport stamps? But with domestic travel you don’t get any anyway, so this is nice.
I find less and less countries stamp. Spain doesn’t, uk didn’t last time I travelled there. Last stamp I have was 11 years ago. Countries like Cuba and North Korea don’t because of the negative repercussions for many traveling there.

The last time I flew from Atlanta, arguably one of the larger facilities it was necessary to present my credentials and be photographed. Any REALID on the phone was not acceptable. I attempted to use my VA Health Card, a federally issued photo ID. It was not acceptable as the ID could not be scanned in the scanning machines. Only a driver's license, passport, or passport card. I doubt the machines will be adapted to scan a phone anytime soon.

As has been my experience. My last trip to Germany I had to ask for a stamp, just because I wanted it. It seemed to irritate the agent. All the travel information is on the screen. Countries visited, dates, etc. for most countries.

This is like saying "As awesome as Apple Pay is, there is 0 chance I am willingly handing over my entire phone to any cashier!"
When you voluntarily hand your phone over to a cop to show your license, they can search your entire phone for any evidence of any crime.

When you hand over your phone to a cashier, no such permission is granted.

Edit: looks like I am incorrect in light of, e.g., The Real ID Modernization Act. My bad.

As awesome as this and digital state driver licenses are, there is 0 chance I am willingly handing over my entire phone to any authority!
As Apple is working with the Airlines, they’ll TSA will just scan your iPhone like they scan the digital boarding pass and verify if that’s really you and then let you continue on. Even if they do have to hold your phone, you can easily just lock it and they’ll just only have access to your Digital ID/Passport.

psa: you can get a passport card for $30 extra at passport renewal, and that can be used for TSA and other federal identification needing Real ID.

Wouldn't work for international travel, but good for domestic travel

For those having a hard time imagining how this works and to quiet the paranoia in this thread, here you go:

It doesn't unlock your phone, you DO NOT hand your phone to anybody, nobody even needs to look at your phone because you're not showing them a picture of your driver's license, you're authorizing access to specific information from your State's database.

You tap the terminal, it tells you what it's requesting, and then you agree to send just that information with a Face ID confirmation, just like Apple Pay. Your phone remains locked and in your possession.

Here's how to think about it: You can use it to check into TSA checkpoints at select airports (and even then, sometimes you can't, machines not working, or TSA Pre only and you aren't on TSA Pre, or the agent just yells at you to show your ID card).

You can't use it for customs at all. You can't enter or exit any country with it. You can't even use it where you can use passport cards (a separate thing you can get that lets you pass certain border checkpoints, but not for use in international air travel). They don't accept it, yet, for anything besides TSA.

It's a way of delivering national ID in Apple Wallet. But it's not a replacement for a physical passport.

Reminder: if you are doing any international travel, you need a passport. You can optionally use a passport for domestic travel, especially if you don't have a RealID card and RealID is now required for domestic air travel.
But it is a government-issued ID, so for those of us who live under wildly-incompetent state governments, this is the only way we'll be streamlining domestic flight boarding before about 2082.

The reason you were incorrect is that you scan your phone. You're not handing it over. It's called NFC technology.

I like this in a way but I prefer to have my physical passport with me. I have photos of that and my license on my phone as a just in case thing. I like to go on cruises, I leave my passport in the cabin while we are off the ship. Being able to access it on my phone may be helpful if needed.

One of the perks of being American is you get these goodies! So jealous rn
Don't be so certain. There is a huge push to have a digital footprint everywhere so this could very well be ways to surveillance and control you. While I get the benefits and convenience, on the long run this could backfire.

Point taken but I couldn’t imagine someone getting the card but not the book.

Detaining someone with a U.S. passport?
Not due to entering the country - but for customs search and crime investigation.

Depends on your personal risk profile - but U.S. citizens have been detained when entering the U.S. (though that will still require a physical passport for the foreseeable future).
