"it can be used at select TSA checkpoints throughout the United States"
So... I still need to bring my "Real ID" card, don't I.

I'm just commenting to emphasize that the passport card is cheaper than a full passport, and it's handy for those of us who live near the Canada or Mexico border and want to drive across, or if you're going on a cruise in the Caribbean. And it works for domestic flights. You can't even use it where you can use passport cards (a separate thing you can get that lets you pass certain border checkpoints, but not for use in international air travel).
I find less and less countries stamp. Spain doesn’t, uk didn’t last time I travelled there. Last stamp I have was 11 years ago. Countries like Cuba and North Korea don’t because of the negative repercussions for many traveling there.Who doesn’t like collecting passport stamps? But with domestic travel you don’t get any anyway, so this is nice.
"No way I'm lettin' the gub'mint have access to my passport info!"It only took a few posts before someone posts this misinformation…yet…..again.
As has been my experience. My last trip to Germany I had to ask for a stamp, just because I wanted it. It seemed to irritate the agent. All the travel information is on the screen. Countries visited, dates, etc. for most countries.I find less and less countries stamp.
Missing your flight because the TSA doesn't accept digital ID's.Huh? Reimburse your ticket for what?
When you voluntarily hand your phone over to a cop to show your license, they can search your entire phone for any evidence of any crime. This is like saying "As awesome as Apple Pay is, there is 0 chance I am willingly handing over my entire phone to any cashier!"
As Apple is working with the Airlines, they’ll TSA will just scan your iPhone like they scan the digital boarding pass and verify if that’s really you and then let you continue on. Even if they do have to hold your phone, you can easily just lock it and they’ll just only have access to your Digital ID/Passport.As awesome as this and digital state driver licenses are, there is 0 chance I am willingly handing over my entire phone to any authority!
Honest question, how is this misinformation? It only took a few posts before someone posts this misinformation…yet…..again.

What country still stamps passports?Who doesn’t like collecting passport stamps? But with domestic travel you don’t get any anyway, so this is nice.
But it is a government-issued ID, so for those of us who live under wildly-incompetent state governments, this is the only way we'll be streamlining domestic flight boarding before about 2082.Here's how to think about it: You can use it to check into TSA checkpoints at select airports (and even then, sometimes you can't, machines not working, or TSA Pre only and you aren't on TSA Pre, or the agent just yells at you to show your ID card).
You can't use it for customs at all. You can't enter or exit any country with it. You can't even use it where you can use passport cards (a separate thing you can get that lets you pass certain border checkpoints, but not for use in international air travel). They don't accept it, yet, for anything besides TSA.
It's a way of delivering national ID in Apple Wallet. But it's not a replacement for a physical passport.
Reminder: if you are doing any international travel, you need a passport. You can optionally use a passport for domestic travel, especially if you don't have a RealID card and RealID is now required for domestic air travel.
Detaining someone with a U.S. passport? Ok...In light of the US government doing whatever they can to find reasons to detain you while at customs, this seems like great risk to consider
The reason you were incorrect is that you scan your phone. You're not handing it over. It's called NFC technology. When you voluntarily hand your phone over to a cop to show your license, they can search your entire phone for any evidence of any crime.
When you hand over your phone to a cashier, no such permission is granted.
Edit: looks like I am incorrect in light of, e.g., The Real ID Modernization Act. My bad.
Don't be so certain. There is a huge push to have a digital footprint everywhere so this could very well be ways to surveillance and control you. While I get the benefits and convenience, on the long run this could backfire. One of the perks of being American is you get these goodies! So jealous rn
Point taken but I couldn’t imagine someone getting the card but not the book.I'm just commenting to emphasize that the passport card is cheaper than a full passport, and it's handy for those of us who live near the Canada or Mexico border and want to drive across, or if you're going on a cruise in the Caribbean. You also don't get actual first class on domestic flights. 🍷🤣Who doesn’t like collecting passport stamps? But with domestic travel you don’t get any anyway, so this is nice.
Not due to entering the country - but for customs search and crime investigation.Detaining someone with a U.S. passport?
Quite a few when you fly in to the country. I collected a lot in western Europe last year. But I had to get a new passport renewal the day I got back, so my new passport looks plain. Off goI to Europe again in the fall for three months. I'm sure I'll get a few. What country still stamps passports?
