In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman discussed Apple's upcoming AI plans in more detail. As he reported last week, this will apparently include a Siri app with a so-called "Extensions" feature across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

With the Siri app, the report said that iPhone, iPad, and Mac users would be able to interact with Apple's assistant in both text and voice modes. The app would also provide users with access to their past conversations with Siri. Overall, the Siri app would function similarly to the ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude apps.

Siri has been able to tap into ChatGPT since iOS 18.2, and the "Extensions" feature would allow for additional third-party chatbots to be connected.

"Extensions allow agents from installed apps to work with Siri, the Siri app and other features on your devices," reads fine print in the Settings app on an internal, pre-release version of iOS 27, according to Gurman. The first developer beta of iOS 27 should be available in June, ahead of a wide release to all users in September.

In his newsletter, Gurman said the App Store will have a dedicated "Extensions" section.

"It will be a marketplace of sorts for third-party AI integrations," he wrote.

That fine print also seemingly confirms that Apple is indeed testing a Siri app.

It is unclear if the Siri app will be available on all iPhone models compatible with iOS 27, or if it will require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer with Apple Intelligence support.

Beyond supporting more third-party chatbots, Siri will receive a major overhaul on iOS 27, according to Gurman. He expects Siri to have a redesigned interface, which may involve the Dynamic Island, and there will apparently be a systemwide "Ask Siri" button in Apple's apps and a "Write with Siri" button above the keyboard.

2 years too late, but hopefully it’s designed in a way that is easy to use. The current ai integration / interface is a clusterfk mess with piecemeal crap spread all over the place, like a toddler dropping a box of Legos across the floor.

It’s not rocket science, have a centralized app/chatbot that can be easily accessed with hardware click, have it the same intelligence as the current models from Claude/Openai etc., then hook that chat bot internally across the iOS / apps as agents. So for example if I type or say going to sleep silence phone for all calls except from mom, it will be able to action. Or order ramen from restaurant using uber for pickup it can use the Uber hook to place the order….

It seems Apple is going in that direction, which is good. Just 2 years too late and hopefully their ui implementation this time around isn’t sht.

I hope they are not holding on to this name. Siri as a product is largely seen as an embarrassment. They should start fresh with a new name.
I hope they’ll allow us to select from a variety of names.

If Siri becomes halfway competent and lots of people start using it, we’ll all be activating Siri on other peoples’ devices.

A lot of great potential for this to use different levels of al where you need it.

Just need a Siri that can answer any question you need without needing to use Gemini app all the time

People always say its too late. What does that mean ? Are you not going to use it ? Is Apple dead because of it ? Apple is just fine. People are still figuring out what AI is and how it can help them. Hell most people do not even want AI so I am not sure how it is too late for Apple.

I hope it also works on iPhones without Apple Intelligence, at least in the EU, because they were told last year that they had to open the voice assistant to third parties.

Apple has to deliver with iOS 27 that’s for sure. Get those who say have to see to believe it but they wouldn’t say it’s coming again if it wasn’t delivering

Why even have extensions? I thought the new Siri chatbot was supposed to be a competitor to these other ones.

To give options so people can tie in new Siri with others basically and also seems like Apple can depend less on building more al and add others al into their hardware

Gurman's article is full of guesswork and contradictions.
I feel like Gurman pretty accurate when he’s just reporting on a rumor given to him. But when he goes beyond that not so great. I think someone like Jason Snell (who is not in the rumor business) does a better job hypothesizing what Apple might be up to and why.

Yeah Gurman is drawing some far-reaching conclusions based on the story.

someone is feeding Gurman, I suppose someone from Apple. And didn't Apple say sometime 6 months or so ago that they are not planning on a chatbot?
well, we'll find out the truth in like 10 weeks or so ...

I've long thought that Gurman was Apple's "unofficial" leaker, sanctioned directly by c-suite management. Sometimes they feed him good info, and sometimes garbage.

It can be useful only if there're extensions to replace Apple AI stack with proper models.
I think that's exactly the goal. You need the Apple side of things to say something like "do something with the photo I just took", but you can have ChatGPT or Gemini, etc. do that 'something'. We'll have to wait and see how cleanly/seamlessly that all works, but everything we read suggests that is the goal.
