why does this all sound like apple is throwing spaghetti against the wall to see what sticks? this latest iteration of BYOAI is the best option though. but like so many, we've already picked our LLM and are already using them. siri is out. so what is apple actually hoping to accomplish now? maybe they're testing to avoid further lawsuits over apple intelligence? i've turned off siri and won't turn it back on.

Siri is "built in" to the operating systems, which is an entirely different implementation from EVERY other AI solution currently on the market. Moving Siri to an LLM-based technology is not trivial. We've all seen the missteps and chaos coming out of the frontier AI labs, and how they've all been figuring it out as time goes on. Nothing has been mature about it, and Apple has been insanely smart to keep back and let the technology mature before building it into their operating systems.

It would have been a major disaster for Apple, and worse for Siri, if Apple had jumped onto the emerging technology too soon and made huge blunders. Instead, Siri has remained a reliable non-LLM assistant.

You already have access to competing solutions, so there's been no urgency for Siri to replicate that. Not sure why Apple is receiving such bad rap. They've been smart about this.

As for you turning off Siri entirely... well, that's unfortunate and likely not a fault of Siri's current design. She works great for me on a daily basis doing what she was designed to do. Can you give 3 examples of why you chose to turn her off? Be specific.

Why even have extensions? I thought the new Siri chatbot was supposed to be a competitor to these other ones.

So much excellent work is being done by the frontier labs, and Apple knows that. Why not leverage it? Apple is not an inventor of new technologies. They perfect existing technologies and focus on a great user experience, privacy, and data security.

People always say its too late. What does that mean ? Are you not going to use it ? Is Apple dead because of it ? Apple is just fine. People are still figuring out what AI is and how it can help them. Hell most people do not even want AI so I am not sure how it is too late for Apple.

Here, "too late" means that the excitement about this feature has already passed. Now it's accompanied by a feeling of irritation and impatience. One of the richest companies has already managed to postpone its launch twice, and in the meantime, to add to this, lie and release crappy systems just to distract from its failure.

Siri is a pathetic joke. Siri would’ve been an industry leader if Apple’s clueless and mediocre CEO Tim Cook hadn’t fired Scott Forstall. Forstall oversaw some problematic initial releases, but his constant pursuit of excellence led to improving and perfecting those releases over time. So blame Cook for how Siri is today.

Give it a rest Scott’s mum. It’s boring.

Explain how his “constant pursuit of excellence” (a euphemistic phrase used to excuse many a sociopathic DB who doesn’t take responsibility for his mistakes) led to Apple Maps improving AFTER he got his pink slip?

The thing I hate most about Siri is whenever I use it (very infrequently) and it (very frequently) gets everything wrong, or even when I question the competence of anything else in the vicinity, with “SERIOUSLY?”, it pipes up like a broken compass.

Maybe it’s my clipped accent, but it’s like it’s fundamentally attuned to failure and incompetence. I also know several friends and colleagues called Siri (it’s a common Norwegian name) who wish Apple would just stop flogging a dead horse and just euthanise the thing.

I think that's exactly the goal. You need the Apple side of things to say something like "do something with the photo I just took", but you can have ChatGPT or Gemini, etc. do that 'something'. We'll have to wait and see how cleanly/seamlessly that all works, but everything we read suggests that is the goal.

Plus it may be even cheaper for Apple to go this way instead of developing a whole new AI system.

I really have to disagree with that unless the definition of reliable has changed. Siri always misunderstands commands and provides less than useful responses. Its integration with maps is horrible. Asking it to call a contact can easily turn into an argument.

I agree it would have been a blunder but the reality is that Apple should have known all along the risks and challenges of implementing LLM tech simply from using it internally and either should not have been teasing Apple Intelligence for two years or started with a slow rollout of bring your own ai and allow users to accept the inherent risks. Apple fumbled this ball badly and it just reinforces the weakness of the leadership team.

I really think Tim and Craig need to exit over the ongoing software fiascos that go beyond just this AI discussion.

[update] I have autocorrect disabled and still find iOS replacing words on its own. Worse, the software has zero context awareness. How does Apple have any defense for fumbling a most basic need of a smart phone — the keyboard?

I feel like Gurman pretty accurate when he’s just reporting on a rumor given to him. But when he goes beyond that not so great. I think someone like Jason Snell (who is not in the rumor business) does a better job hypothesizing what Apple might be up to and why.

Yeah, but he’s not been given any rumors in awhile, probably years at this point. I wonder if Bloomberg forced AppleTrack to stop updating so no one would see the decline. He’s only “right” now on those things that we all would have guessed. “There’s going to be a new iPhone this year!”, “New Apple Silicon will be faster”. Everything else is either wrong or unverifiable. “Apple to release new Siri in a point release instead of at WWDC as they have for years”, “Apple was going to do a thing but decided not to do that thing and you know I’m right because, look, the thing I said they were going to do then that they weren’t going to do, they didn’t do!”

Because, contrary to what some may believe, the majority of the 200+ million folks that bought the different versions of the iPhone 16 bought it because it was an iPhone, not because it had some new AI feature they wanted. The same is true for the 17s and the same WILL be true for the 18.s

I MIGHT believe that if Forstall had done literally anything in tech after he left. Those that have the fire for driving tech advances can’t help but do that, no matter where they go after leaving Apple. In the end, he couldn’t take the heat for something that was under his purview and reached the end of his usefulness.

No matter how you phrase the second question Siri will always give you your weather, not the person’s weather

The opportunity to turn Apple Intelligence into a moneymaker has effectively passed.

Absurd statement.

Apple has effectively conceded the AI race. That means not developing a serious competitor internally while letting third parties innovate.

Mark cannot know this. Apple has their own corporate model Enchanté up and running right now, is being used across the whole company, from design to engineering. Will they build this up over time and offer in outside of Apple corporate? Not to mention, there's no way to know if they have other models or related projects.
