There needs to be a better way of not overriding custom words. The number of times it corrects a word that wasn’t incorrect, and I had to delete it to put my spelling in again. There is a way to select your custom word for it to accept, but you have to think first if it is custom to select it, which doesn’t work when typing fast

I would also love a paste button when there is something copied to the clipboard, the same way as iPadOS. I hate having to tap into a tiny text field and then paste.

All these actions where you have to wait a second before the menu appears are driving me mad. Sometimes I think I didn’t tap right, and tap again, which makes the menu that just appeared in that moment disappear again. #&$%

Also, pasting at an exact location that doesn’t happen to match what iOS considers a likely paste position is super difficult, because you have to hit the exact same spot twice, once to place the cursor, and then again to open the menu. If you move a tiny bit you’re just placing the cursor again.

I wonder how many of the above unhappy posters have taken the time to write a thoughtful and business-like letter to Craig Federighi expressing their unhappiness and wishes for a better keyboard that would make them happy?

I suspect the number is zero. As an aside... years ago I wrote a letter to Craig with a suggestion (I don't remember what it was) and received a letter back from him thanking me, and that the suggestion was implemented.

When in the world are they finally give us a number row on the keyboard?
It is such a pain to keep switching between the number and letters when need to type.
Android has it for years!

It’s one of the things I miss about Android, the keyboard customisations that simply aren’t available, not even on the iOS version of gboard. Stuff like literally dragging a slider to decide how tall the keyboard will be.

Number row takes extra processing power, like calculator on iPadOS. Be patient

It needs to remember what words we correct to. My Samsung Android did that NINE YEARS AGO.

Especially with dictation. For example, I don't use "wanna." I always have to change it to "want to." It should remember that.

Also, when dictating, I don't want it to choose a proper noun from my Contacts in place of a regular word. I'm not going to put someone's first name, capitalized, in the middle of a sentence when it makes no sense there.

How can Apple employees be so smart, yet create such stupidity?

There needs to be more options like that for sure. At least on the iPad I’d like to have left/right arrow keys like Android has. Placing/moving the input mark precisely by touch is always such a pain.
I'm not sure if by "touch" you mean pressing where you want. If so, if you hold the spacebar down for a moment, you enter a mode where you can directly move the cursor to where you want.

This bites me so often. And since I know I typed it correctly, I don't reread always to make sure the keyboard did not decide to change it to something else.

Yes, I mean that by touch. It’s still a pain to move the cursor exactly between the two characters you want, or to move it after the next character so you can press Delete (Backspace) because the keyboard has no forward Delete. And sometimes the hold registers wrong so you’re typing a space you have to delete again.

Ah, then I hear you. I often have the cursor movement mode move vertically when I meant to go horizontally.

Sorry for stating an obvious. I wasn't sure how well-known this gesture was.

Would like to see an update to the default keyboard. As of now I use SwiftKey. Looking forward to trying the new one.

So it’ll actively read any text for context and send it to a server - no thanks - first thing to turn off - think about what your writing, learn grammar and spelling - don’t let AI take away your thinking / or delegate your thoughts, decisions and needs to an AI - who knows what it will add to you context to lead you. Turn it off and think for yourself
