Apple has tested an updated iPhone keyboard with autocorrect enhancements, according to a report this week from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The report said the keyboard "expands autocorrect by offering alternative words," similar to tools like Grammarly. "It suggests alternative words in addition to word fixes like today's autocorrect," said Gurman, in a follow-up social media post.

Grammarly evolved to use AI in recent years, so perhaps the iPhone keyboard's expanded autocorrect system would be powered by Apple Intelligence. The report did not provide any further details, so we will have to wait and see.

Gurman briefly touched on the keyboard plans in a report focused on how Siri may be able to handle multiple requests in a single query on iOS 27.

Apple has not made a final decision on whether to release the updated keyboard, according to Gurman, but it would presumably debut as part of iOS 27 as well if it does materialize. The first developer beta of iOS 27 is expected to be released in June, and the software update should be widely released in September.

iOS 26.4 already "improved keyboard accuracy when typing quickly," according to Apple's release notes for that update, released last week.

As long as it can be turned off. The homogenization of writing by tools like grammerly that rework it to the same overused boring style is a pet peeve of mine. I'd rather deal poor grammar and word choice than writing that was reworked by bland algorithms.

What the duck? I haven't really noticed improved accuracy when typing quickly. Anyone else hit o all the time instead of i? I thonk its a me problem
Yes there’s a major improvement in accuracy but the predictability upgrade isn’t significant. For iOS 27, I say the keyboard now is fine and shouldn’t be messed with. I feel like they’ll mess it up and take another six months to repair it.

God they still have a VERY long way to go with the keyboard. Still no multilingual support except for a handful of languages, still no swipe keyboard except for a handful of languages, still no context awareness. I really wish I could ditch SwiftKey but sadly that's not possible right now.

I hope this upgrade adds the ability to make the keyboard larger. Yes I’m aware I can use the system-wide “Zoomed” setting, but I don’t want it everywhere: ONLY THE KEYBOARD. A larger keyboard would also go one step further in helping typing accuracy. It should really be a setting!

iOS and iPadOS users really really don't know how bad the stock keyboard is compared to Google's Android Gboard.

This alone is keeping me from going back to iPhone. Apple keeps bringing new features every year to their mobile OS but they refuse to update what really needs to be improved.

I cannot understand how Craig Fedirighi (or even Tim Cook) allow the iOS keyboard to be so so so far behind the competition. It's as is they don't even try what others are doing, which sometimes can be better.

Still no multilingual support except for a handful of languages
Even for the languages where it’s supported, it’s limited and not very smart. For example, it will use the quote style of the primary language even when you are clearly typing in the secondary language. So you still have to define two bilingual keyboards with the languages swapped and pick the right one, if you don’t want to correct punctuation all the time.
