I'm not a fan of this either. In my experience, it typically does match the radar though. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is using that info and color coding things differently just to be fancy. They don't need to be reinventing the wheel here. Just use the standard radar colors and differentiate if it's rain, snow, or ice.

I can't stand the unhelpful color palette for radar. The Weather app would be passable if they didn't screw with the colors.

I don’t judge a weather app by the quality of its UI but the quality of its prediction.

In France, the stock weather app is consistently wrong.
The Meteo France app while ugly is always spot on and has perfect 1 hour rain prediction. 15 days prediction is a little worse but still decent.

Is Apple refusing to pay for decent weather data outside the US?

What about better accuracy?
That depends on where they get the data from.
In the U.K I use the metoffice app on my phone and their website on my computer. It is pretty accurate, never going to be 100%, certainly not where I live.

Why is A.I needed for a weather app? All I do is open the app or the website and look at the forecast, then close it.

It's free and it's 'good enough'. But the widgets... gosh, I hate the widgets! I really enjoy Carrot Weather just for its widgets. I love a minimalist look (no colored background) and the half-and-half hourly/daily widget that automatically switches to precipitation/hourly.

Yes indeed the Cupertino company is positively addicted to froufrou.

The Weather app, much like the sad Calendar and Contacts apps leave a lot to be desired.

They’ve been allowed to languish for too long.
Apple, under Cook, has no idea what it takes to maintain an App. They code and move on to the next shiny App.

It is a shame that they have blocked independent developers for Apps that compete with Apple's.

All these features and details are really nice.

But the major issue they should really work on is improving data and use local data sources and weather models. At least in Europe the forecast and even the current weather shown in the app often completely differs from what's outside my window. Local weather apps usually get it much better, but often don't look so nice.

And 90% of the time, the weather forecast is wrong, or the radar doesn't show anything. I also wish they would allow you to select the weather station that is relevant to where you are. I live in a city, that has 3 stations all within 8km, but the one closest, is the one that weather chooses to use, and it's by the coast, and I'm inland to that, and beside the city river, whereby the most accurate station is 1/2 a km further away, but truly reflective of the weather. I'm talking a difference of 3/4 degrees of celsius, and wind pattern significantly different.
So I use Weatherzone, that allows for this.

When will the iWeather app be as accurate as Accuweather?
Only if they do not use the same sources. In my region for example everything’s extrapolated for 25 miles or so. Every notification for rain or thunderstorm is way off. Both Apple and AccuWeather. Even though it’s almost flat here, it can rain in one spot and super dry 3 miles further down the road. I’ve considered buying my own weather sensor, but these are so expensive and need frequent maintenance.

Reading through this thread, I’m going to go ahead and switch over to AccuWeather - literally none of these features matter if Apple hasn’t improved the accuracy of its Weather app. It’s incredibly frustrating to live close enough to the Central Valley that daily highs are consistently off by 3-5 degrees, and worse when planning for driving to/from Tahoe and skiing. Don’t get me started on snowfall projections in Weather, which I’ve seen be completely off not by one or two inches, but by almost a foot in either direction. I’m truly annoyed with the tech industry right now, which adds fluff over substance almost 10 times out of 10 these days </rant>

I would take Siri being able to tell you when and how much precipitation you're going to get. Rain and snow volumes mean a lot in terms of planning your day

It is the same inside the US. Its accuracy depends on how "close" you are to an official weather station. In my case, the distance isn't great, but microclimate effects prevail. I actually think that people should just lower their expectations for generic apps like this and go with third-party apps that are supported by people who care about the real-world data in the place where you are.

I wish the chosen weather icon for each day made remote sense. a light rain for an hour at midnight should not equal a rain cloud on a day thats full sun..... Every week im like ugh its gonna rain all weekend and then I look at the hourly and its fine

MSN Weather ! Updates every 10 min. Comprehensive to a fault ! Weather for where you are, where you're going, and yes, where you were yesterday. Lists of things they elaborate on (incl. my fave: past, current, and future barometric pressure), great R-Y-G Doppler radar, etc. Free, but with limited commercials. The only one better is NOAA.

The Weather app fails in the most basic and dumbest way. The low temp shown throughout the day is for the night before. It should be the up-coming low temperature of the present day. Right now the day's weather shows H:68 L:53. The 53F low temp was from 4AM today. The low temp expected tonight is 59F. I don't know of any other weather app that does this. Fix that, Apple.

I disagree. That is, usually, today's low, at, e.g. 4AM today. Weather people always announce yesterday's high and last night's low, then, today's expected high and tonight's (usu tomorrow's) expected low. A reasonable app would show you both. And, preferably, a graph for the last few days, continuing into the future for a few days. Excessively precise predictions for more than a few days are not a good idea.

Take a look at the Wunderground app. A bit too much reliance on unmaintained private stations, but, better than an official station 10 miles away in a different microclimate area.
