iOS 27 Will Let You Create Custom Wallet Passes

Back in April, we highlighted a new add-your-own card Wallet app option coming in iOS 27, and now Bloomberg has shared additional information. At the time, we said Apple was working on a feature that would let users generate digital passes from scans of things like movie tickets, concert passes, and gym membership cards.

The option will be called "Create a Pass," and it will bridge the gap between the Wallet app and passes that are not compatible with it. Users will be able to tap on the "+" button in the Wallet app and then scan a QR code on a pass or ticket if one is available. If there is no QR code available, there will be an option to create a custom pass.

Text in the app suggests the feature will work for tickets, memberships, gift cards, and more. There are three pass types, each with a different color. Apple is using purple for events, blue for memberships, and orange for other types of passes. Users will be able to customize images, colors and style, and text on the digital passes.

The new Wallet option is one of many features coming in iOS 27, which will be previewed at Apple's June WWDC event. More information on what to expect from iOS 27 can be found in our roundup.

If they want to put Credit Cards, Gift cards, ID, Tickets, Boarding Passes, etc. they need to redesign the app to be able to separate clearly each category and have it easy to access.

The way it is now, it sucks.

This is the biggest advancement to the wallet since Apple revolutionized the mobile wallet in 2012. This changes everything, all over again!

But seriously, this is yet another example of the lesson learned from the original HomePod. Don't release everything at once, as that prevents a clear upgrade path. Without a clear upgrade path, you significantly impair ever-increasing profits.

I suppose there won’t be any solution where the QR codes are dynamic in apps. Although I use 3rd party app for less frequently used passes this would be good addition especially if there are options for categories / folders

Full agree.

I started out using Stocard, but was a bit miffed about how they evolved.

Then they sold out to Klarna, and things changes some more ... still using it but the sooner I can kick it to the curb and have all my store and other membership cards in the Apple wallet the happier and more comfortable I will feel.

One less 3rd party app providing essential functionaly with no apple analogue is a good thing.

I’d start by being happy if they actually updated automatically like they’re supposed to. I don’t even know what the purpose of that toggle is.

I couldn't agree more

Given that I have a ton of things in my all my cards (credit and debit), my parking garage access pass, insurance card, etc etc, right now it is just a hot mess

as long as it works with regular bar codes. QR codes are rarely used for such things.

Excited for this, and hopefully a way to organize cards better. There are apps that already let you create custom wallet passes from QR codes etc. I've used it for years for things like Planet Fitness pass, so that when I'm near planet fitness automatically shows bar code on lock screen and tap to scan rather than the process of opening their slow app, waiting for it to load etc. The problem is after a while it can stop working since they have a digital one that changes sometimes, so assume this native feature will run into the same issue that it will work for static QR's more easily, but won't help with all the companies that have dynamic ones and purposely dont offer Wallet integration because they want you to have a reason to open their app.
