Some are fine
Maybe. I spent a long time about a month ago trying to find one that would work for creating two loyalty cards and honestly it was so frustrating…

They either wanted a subscription or the apps were trash. I don’t mind paying for apps, but for a one-off creating of a virtual card I don’t feel it’s worth the money on a sub. I found a janky freebie in the end, but Apple making this native is a win from my perspective.

Great but it would be ideal to also add an option to take a photo of the card, without it just being QR code. I have others cards I would love to add like Medicare Card, Flybys, Discount Cards, etc like we can on Samsung/Google Wallet. It’s been around for years, yet apple is yet so behind on the simple stuff. 🙄

Yes, it is indeed ridiculous that there have been many apps of questionable quality that would do this over the years but Apple took this long to acknowledge it.

And yes the organization needs to be better.

Did you know there is a separate section for verified insititutional cards like IDs and payment cards vs non-verified loyalty cards, passes, etc?

Yeah neither does anyone else, especially anyone who would actually have a use to verify such a thing.

I'm not really sure why they weren't able to get this in until now. What prevented them from being able to do it when they first launched it? Was it just poor engineering or a lack of planning beforehand?

But they made a rainbow watch band to make gay people feel better. That must count for something.

This is Apple surrendering to QR codes when they pushed NFC.
Yeah, it's a real shame to be honest. NFC is the better choice. NFC cards self summon, so they don't require you to open the wallet app, don't require you to look for the card. Just tap it on the terminal and job done.

In Australia we have two major supermarket chains, Woolworths and Coles.
At Woolworths, they have NFC membership cards. You can just tap your phone right before payment and it will automatically summon your rewards card, tap it a second time and your bank card self summons, job done.

With a Barcode/QR code, you have to open the wallet app, find the card out of potentially a long list, select it, display it in front of a scanner/camera etc..So at Coles, i have to go looking for my flybys rewards barcode, so if I'm in a rush, I just don't bother.

I suppose there won’t be any solution where the QR codes are dynamic in apps.
This would be the big thing for me - there are places, like Costco and Target, that use a dynamic QR code, to make sure people can't just use a screenshot of someone else's card. It would be awesome if Apple made an API for those store's apps to communicate with Wallet, to pass in the needed time-based seed, so that the Wallet app could display these codes directly (that way it's still secure for the store - you need the app logged into your account for the card to display properly in Wallet).

I'd also like to see them support more barcode formats. My library card (many do this, apparently) use a barcode format that iOS doesn't support. I ended up faking it by making a library card in one of the 3rd party apps (Pass2U maybe?), that used a generated image of the card number in the proper barcode format as the "decorative artwork" image on a generic membership card. Scans just fine, but comparatively painful to update - I'd much prefer a first-party solution.

as long as it works with regular bar codes. QR codes are rarely used for such things.
More than you might think - I've got 3 QR code membership cards in my Apple Wallet (courtesy of a 3rd-party app) - IKEA and two grocery stores. I suspect more will go this direction in the future.

Flybuys can very much be added to Apple Wallet. Just add it from the flybuys app.

If there is no QR code available, there will be an option to create a custom pass.

Text in the app suggests the feature will work for tickets, memberships, gift cards, and more. There are three pass types, each with a different color
This is awesome news!

I’ve been wanting Apple to add this feature for so long. One way that Apple could make this feature especially useful would be to add the ability for users to input SPECIFIC addresses for which this QR code would automatically display on the user’s lock screen

I’ve been doing this for years with the integrated Starbucks gift card (within the🍎Wallet app) because the actual Starbucks app lets you classify as many frequently visited stores as ‘favorite stores’ within the app by selecting the green 💚 button (within the list of your nearest stores) and your favorites list then AUTOMATICALLY syncs over to your iOS Wallet app so whenever you are within 100 ft of THAT particular location, the QR code will automatically display right on the lock screen, negating the extra steps of first unlocking📱 then opening wallet, etc.

You can literally have your iPhone locked (and in your pocket) pull it out and then PAY (with it still completely locked) just by tapping on the QR code (at the bottom of the lock screen) to then display the gift card to the cashier for it to be scanned. It’s that simple and you still earn all the points and promotions etc.

Again, zero unlocking and I’ve been using this geo-fence (auto QR display) feature for over 10 years for Starbucks with about 7 different Starbucks locations that I occasionally go to (in the Boston area, Cleveland and RI) to enable a much more streamlined payment, which eliminates the unnecessary time spent fumbling with the Starbucks app (and speeds up the morning line for everyone else)

Many people have also asked me how to go about setting this feature up on their phone because so many people are just used to paying directly via the Starbucks app (which by the way, won’t work if you 1 don’t have an internet connection OR 2 if the app itself it out of date - and needs to be updated via the App Store) this method eliminates these two inconveniences as well

If Apple were to add a geo-fence feature for ANY store’s gift card or scannable coupon, similar to how Starbucks implements it⬆️ one use case would be to first set the location as my local Home Depot, then upload the gift card(s) QR coded to that link 🔗 and then every time the system detects that my phone is within 100 ft of that imputed address (my local Home Depot) the QR codes for all my Home Depot gift cards or coupons would AUTOMATICALLY display when I’m at the register, without needing to unlock my phone or locate a screenshot buried in the photos app at all. You know how much time this feature would save?? A lot 😳
🤞🍎😎

I love this - I had "Stocard" that let me store loyalty cards. Then it got bought by another provider where I had to register with them so dropped that. I have a number of loyalty cards that aren't integrated into Wallet that I would love to integrate. And better organisation is a must.

Flybuys can very much be added to Apple Wallet. Just add it from the flybuys app.
In Australia, the Medicare card is NFC based and Flybuys is a barcode that you can add from the Flybuys app.

This website hasn't been updated in a while, and as a result is missing a few places. But if you're in Australia you might find it useful.

How many cards do you have in Wallet? Cause it ain't great...
11 cards in the main section, these being my home key and car key in addition to credit cards. And in the points/membership cards section I have about a dozen. The main section is displayed perfectly without going off the screen.

Thanks for this - incredibly useful. Finally managed to add my Everyday rewards card to apple wallet - now to test whether I need to open the barcode to access shop and go.

What type of cards are these 64 exactly?
All sorts of cards, and as of today, 76 in total.

It’s fair to say that half of these cards won’t be used more than twice a year.

In saying that, i still have about 30 I use frequently. So with no tabs/sections or search function in the Wallet app, it can be a PITA. Thankfully most of the important stuff I frequently use is NFC with auto selection.

My state government just announced that they will be using a digital drivers license and ID provided by Apple and Google Wallets. Which to my knowledge, will be the first country outside of the USA to adopt the technology. So i guess they will be in my Apple Wallet too.

My public transport system uses Visa/Mastercard via the Wallet Express Transit slot, which is a shame, since our SmartRider 20% discount system isn’t compatible with smartphones.

Understand that Australia has been the world leader in tap and pay since it was first invented. I’ve not swiped a bank card in over 15 years.
