Perhaps this is so Steve can say 'Problem Solved' tomorrow!

So why have a press conference at all?

I can't imagine that 4.1 will fix the problem. Maybe the design will be slightly modified and users offered replacement units. All I do know is that this is a mess.

Sorry, I tested a friend on mine's iPhone 4 nine ways to Sunday, and could never replicate the issue, no matter what we tried. I have no doubt that some people are experiencing something, but it seems to me that a hardware issue would be replicable on all devices.

No, it is a hardware issue.

The question is whether or not a software update can power through it or not.

exactly. why stand up and say 'I promise you we will do something' when you can say ' we DID something'

of course all of the screamers here will say 'it does nothing it does nothing'

whatever.

get a case LOL

It's probably just a bunch of bug fixes… odds, it includes the signal bar look change.

Actually that test would prove that it's not a software issue because software would be replicable on all devices. A hardware issue could be either on all devices or just some if it was caused on a certain production line, batch or plant.

No because a software update would help all iPhones equally but the problem is specific to the iP4.

It's like removing a car's antenna and then trying to reprogram the head-unit to compensate, no signal = no nothing PERIOD

It is possible to increase the power to the antenna to increase signal, it comes at a battery cost though. I live in the butter zone where I can make the signal drop while doing nothing, but nothing I do will drop a phone call once initiated due to the increase in power.

isn't it obvious....

steves gonna say, sorry - the only solution possible for apple is too ditch AT&T and their ****** coverage. So, welcome to Apple/Verizon - BOOM!

btw. in Europe, I'm getting better 3G signal and WiFi than ever before...

Lucky you. I'm in the UK and the areas where I got full 3G signal on my iPhone 3GS I now get GPRS on iPhone 4! Not even edge! Not happy.

This seems to assume that you're running the same firmware on all models of iPhone? You're not, you're either running iOS 4.0 for iPhone 4 or iOS 4.0 for iPhone 3GS, etc. A different firmware is tailored for each generation of iPhone hardware, and an update for iPhone 4 may include antenna tweaks that the update for iPhone 3GS doesn't.

Saying that a software fix can't solve a hardware problem may have been true in the days of tin cans tied together with string, but these days there is such an exceedingly complex interaction between hardware and software that it's very difficult to say which is at fault or even more at fault.

I've got no idea whether a software fix is possible, but we simply don't know enough to rule it out at this stage.

That's not what's happening. The phone doesn't lose the ability to get signal. The frequency of the antenna changes and the phone & tower don't adjust to the new frequency. That's the problem.

Is there anyone actually not beeing able to make phone calls with the iphone 4?

I still don´t know anybody who has a problem with this except the bars dropping when touching the spot in some areas. This happens to my old Sony P1i too when i hold it tight (and the antenna is internal!).

To me, this is the biggest hype ever. I´m already hoping Apple won´t "fix" anything on the hardware.
If a recall was made for any minor issue like this, the prices for devices like the iphone will grow bigger and bigger in the next years.

If you´re looking for bugs long enough, you will find them on any technical device these days.

Again, to me the antenna issue is nothing but a very theoretical "nerdy" issue.

We just receive a very interesting piece of information, from a reliable source, and we are passing it on to you.

iOs 4.0.1 will be released today

It's very likely that iOS 4.1 beta 1 that is being distributed to developers since yesterday is actually iOS 4.0.1 that is going to be released today through iTunes

The final release of 4.1 is expected to be released much later, probably September, and after a few beta releases

As always, for users that want to Jailbreak/unlock, it would be wise not to upgrade, if our information is indeed true and the update is released through iTunes

Oh, so you're opened up the modem update and examined what it does, then? Do tell.

Everyone else has reported on the cosmetic parts of the OS (like the bars) but I've seen no one explain what the modem update contains. Do you have some insight or are you just guessing?

So you think a HARDWARE defect in the phone can be fixed by a SOFTWARE update?

It seems his level of intelligence if becoming the norm on here.

It sure would be nice to have field test mode to be able to verify these things...

It helped the issue on my phone. I still lose bars, but I can't make it go to zero bars anymore. I can make calls with one bar with no issues.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but it seems that the 4.1 beta doesn't require you to be a registered dev to use.

I am a registered dev but just installed it on my iPhone 4 and forgot to add my phone as a registered device first. Phone works just fine.

Why don't they ask Paul the Octopus which day the update will come out?! :D

Yes. I gave my iPhone 3G to my sister (who is also on O2) and she's been happy with it. I on the other hand have had many dropped calls, awful reception and friends and family have told me that over the past two weeks they've tried to call me at times when it just goes straight to voicemail - but I don't get a missed call. That feels more like a network issue, yet I've never had so many issues with one phone on O2.

EDIT: As far as the actual antenna issues are concerned, it does happen on my iPhone but its not so bad. I would appreciate a fix, however.
