How about, Yes? No one wants to hear your ridiculous ringtones, and any decent person would find using them in public to be inappropriate and inconsiderate.

actually i just use a standard ring. plus having a mobile phone actually ring is the main purpose of having one..... get a clue....

These are horrible! Way to long and most of them are really loud and whiny. Apple needs to be responsible here or else train journeys are going to become annoying as hell from now on.

they already are annoying from all the other people with garish customer sms tones, ringtones on other phones and just the chavs that play their music off their phones on speaker, so really it's not gonna be that different, just some people will not use the stock iphone ones so 10 people don't all look at their iPhone at once to see if it's theirs when it goes off....

it's funny how some people think this is something brand new and exclusive and it will ruin their world hearing someone elses ringtones, there's bigger things in life to have issues with, there's bigger things with the iPhone to have issues with....

Oh how I want custom SMS tones. I use my iPhone as a pager for work. So, any alerts I get for a page come through as a text message. The "electronic" alert seems to wake me, but I wish it was longer. At least, I wish I could customize it to be longer.

Hopefully one of these new SMS alerts is longer. 5-10 seconds would be good.

For most iphone users I imagine that having the same ringtones is like being a nextel user back in the day. lol.. Phone beeps, everyone looks at there brick nextel lol!

The main purpose of having a mobile phone is to talk on it, not because of the ringing capability.... lol

Unless of course by "having one" you meant a ringtone, in which case I still don't understand your point. Just because it's a phone doesn't mean it HAS to ring. It just needs to alert you in some way or another.

One might as well say... well it's a phone. It needs to have a rotary dialer on it because it's a phone. Or better yet... no dialer. It needs to connect to an operator at all times.

In conclusion your point is neurotic :D

wow, people are being a bit special today. my original reply was to the guy that basically said that no-one in public should have a phone making any noise cos he doesn't like it, i responded as if it didn't ring, you'd never know if someone was calling. simple as.

your rotary dialler comment is just daft, if anything, it supports my comment. the phone needs some dialler of somepoint, like a keypad otherwise how are you meant to actually call people? lol.

Edit, to show what i was replying to, see below

Here's an idea when people are in public: Use vibrate. I don't care to hear any ring tones, message alerts, whatever. Having an iPhone isn't special, no one cares (and I have the 4).

Odds are if you have your phone off of vibrate, you're just looking like Andy Bernard. Home/in your car = sounds. Everywhere else (especially meetings, stores, movie theatres, okay EVERYWHERE ELSE....) = vibrate

here's an idea, how about no? not everyone has their phone somewhere where they can feel it vibrate, when i have mine in my coat's inside pocket, i can't feel it vibrate. having the sounds is NOTHING to do with an iPhone being special, it's about having any phone to actually communicate.... if you don't wanna hear it, go listen to something on headphones or whatever

Inside pocket and you can't feel it vibrate? Really.... I can feel it vibrate in any pocket of my jeans/shorts/jacket. And if I don't want to hear it, why should I wear headphones? How about I just go get a boombox that uses 12 D cells and walk around listening to my music for everyone else to hear?

I'm just sick of the douches that go around with their ringtones/message alerts on volume 11. Then they have to have a conversation for everyone within a 100ft radius to listen to. Don't even get me started on the oh so important people who 'need' to talk on speakerphone.

Sometimes I really wish there weren't any cell phones. Less people talking loud in public, people less distracted driving...... Just because people have cell phones doesn't mean they have to be in constant communication every waking moment of their lives.

As it turns out, new studies have shown that not everyones sensory input is exactly the same as everyone else on the planet. Turns out, some people are more sensitive than average, while others are less! I know, surprising right? But now that we both know this, I'm sure we can apologize for our misconceptions about who can and can not feel/hear particular sensations/sounds. The sensitivity of ones ears or outer thigh should not reflect on their personality.

Just because people have cell phones doesn't mean they have to be in constant communication every waking moment of their lives.

Correct, sir. People like that would likely be in constant communication anyway, or less happy in life. Doesn't make them stupid or "less" in any way shape or form than other human beings. These types of people might decide to use a cell phone as their medium for that desire for communication. Other people babble on about little noises that electronic devices make on internet forums.

Are you just upset because that girl in your middle school class is on her cell phone and not talking to you? :(

my winter coat is quite thick and when the phone vibrates, you cannot feel it. therefore i have to hear it.

nice to see you too also went on a random tangent....

Does anyone know if in this beta the custom ringtones are also applicable to contacts on a case-by-case basis? I'd love for my family to have a ringtone different from others.

anyone else having a problem with mobileme? it keeps telling me invalid password, but i can log on to me.com with no problems

This plus a password glitch in syncing iBooks are known issues with beta 3

The new SMS tones are definitely too long.

One change I noticed is the traffic overlay on maps is now transparent so you can easily see the street names and freeways.

2 things:

  1. If I had to choose from those new SMS tones I would have to go with calypso. I'll stick with tri-tone, like many have already said.
  2. Jailbreak and get BiteSMS. It will be the best thing you ever did for your iPhone.
I agree 100%. Also let me add that I would stab my eyes out if I had to look at your homescreen more than 5 secs. Damn dude!

Can you set custom SMS tones? I always thought that was a missing feature people would like.

Just got my iPhone 4 last week. I was nearly floored to find that you cannot set your own tones for SMS. I mean it's such a small feature that makes such a big impact as far as personalization goes. And it really doesn't make sense why they don't allow it.

Hopefully they'll finally add it.

Quick Compose & Quick Reply... without leaving your current app... or even from the lock screen!
Contact pics in threads & conversations.
Custom SMS tones... and EVEN CUSTOM SMS TONES PER CONTACT! Choose from your stock, SMS tones, stock phone ringtones or iTunes sync'd ringtones!

why jailbreak just for that, jailbreaking is getting less and less necessary these days. custom SMS tones are most likely going to be in 4.2, otherwise why would they go to all the hassle just to add some extra tones...

custom sms tones

I can't believe that the iPhone doesn't have custom sms-tones, must have something to do with them not being real sms and having to rely on the alert notifications?

Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm thirding, fourthing, fifthing, or what, so in regard to the desirability of custom sms tones I will just say this:

Can I get an Amen?

Amen.
