hmm... option to turn off the buttons controlling the volume? so the volume buttons... don't change the volume.

If this works the same way my touch running 4.1 does the option is for having the volume controls control the alert sounds- or not. They always control music playback volume. An interesting option but not one that I found useful- I don't let my touch alert me for anything.

i don't know if that's a new feature or not, but it's useful to me. i always want my ringer on the highest volume possible. if it can't be changed using the buttons, then it is A LOT less likely to be changed accidentally. i see the point and i am setting it now :)

Can't wait to go to the movies and hear one of those ridiculous sms tones from 4 rows down and to the left.

Same here. I'd imagine most iPhone users are the same way.

I'm calling this

A joke from Apple. No way these are making it into the final release. They're having a good chuckle over everyone getting worked up over silly SMS tones. I laughed when I heard them, I think it's hilarious.

Seriously?

"- iPad: Enable/Disable alert sounds for New Mail, Sent Mail, Calendar Alerts, Lock Sounds, Keyboard Clicks"

YOU HAD THE OPTION TO DO THIS EVER SINCE THE IPAD WAS RELEASED!

Ummm, I'm assuming this person has never picked up an iPad before?

who's to say that 4.2 won't have custom SMS tones? if they're messing with the SMS tones coding, then they prob will do it and it just won't be usable until 4.2 is released.

Alright, this is kinda wack. Under beta 2, if I had pandora playing in the background and locked my ipad, if i woke it up but didnt unlock it, and double clicked home so i could get to the music shortcut on lockscreen, there was always an AIRPLAY sign imbetween the "pandora" and volume slider. And yes, it was fully functional. That was the only way i could get pandora streaming to my ATV. Now under beta 3 it is gone.

It's still there with Spotify on my iPad - do you see it with the normal iPod music player? If not, then it could be an issue with Apple TV streaming (I don't have a new Apple TV and are streaming to an Airport Express), or your setup in particular: The button now only shows if there are available devices to stream to.

Edit:
I've just noticed that the AirPlay button appears in the main Spotify App too - pretty cool (but I wish they'd release an iPad native version!)

Those SMS tones must be a joke, right? They're just so goofy and totally not serious. You would be the laughing stock in your professional life.

Higher Resolution Wallpaper In Ios4 Beta 3!

IOS4 BETA 2 ON TOP, and IOS4 BETA 3 ON BOTTOM. As you see in the picture, Apple has redone the new default bubbles wallpaper with the latest version of the iOS4 Beta.

Having more SMS tones is a great thing, and having custom ones would be even better.

The worst is when you go to an Apple store and you hear someone with the same SMS tone as you getting a message, since the chances are someone has the same one because there is so few to choose from. It's not just the Apple store either, it happens all the time when I am out. I change my SMS tone every so often but it doesn't help, there is always someone with the same one and it causes me to look at my phone thinking it came from mine.

I'm taking an iOS development course at my school. There are 12 students plus the instructor, and I'm not the only one who dual-wields iOS devices. It's not even funny. :)

My guess is that the dev's understand that sms tones need to be short.

Here is a possible scenario. I think that these are just place holders. They have several 'slots' set aside for new ring tones. For now, the dev's grabbed a handful of sound files and copied them over. That's why this is a beta ...

I suspect the final version will work the same, but it will have different audio files installed.
Think you are right. The SDK docu shows a lot of activity on the MIDI api. This could be what lies underneeth the new ringtones. Most of the ringtones in this beta are likely just included for testing and not designed yet for production.

All the new alerts are long and annoying. They would just make me want to punch someone in the face even more.

Here's an idea when people are in public: Use vibrate. I don't care to hear any ring tones, message alerts, whatever. Having an iPhone isn't special, no one cares (and I have the 4).

Odds are if you have your phone off of vibrate, you're just looking like Andy Bernard. Home/in your car = sounds. Everywhere else (especially meetings, stores, movie theatres, okay EVERYWHERE ELSE....) = vibrate

here's an idea, how about no? not everyone has their phone somewhere where they can feel it vibrate, when i have mine in my coat's inside pocket, i can't feel it vibrate. having the sounds is NOTHING to do with an iPhone being special, it's about having any phone to actually communicate.... if you don't wanna hear it, go listen to something on headphones or whatever
