Regular sucker mom phone users. 'Nuff said.

It should be as easy as my iPhone.

Apple says "Update ready tomorrow". Tomorrow I plug in my phone to my computer. it updates. The end.

Thanks for making his point for him.

Not only do I *not* need a computer for my Android phone official update (OTA FTW), but if I do want to use a computer then I have my choice of 2 or 3 ROMs after Google puts out an update.

There's nothing wrong with the iPhone upgrade process being easy. It is less hassle for grandmothers and Justin Bieber fans who don't know the first thing about technology (which means that you guys don't call us asking for help when you can't figure it out)

Let us know when you're ready for a big-boy phone and not some glorified iPod that can barely make a phone call without dropping it ;)

It's less hassle for grandmother AND everyone who have better things to do.

You have a good point, as far as smart phones go, iPhone is the dumb blonde.

For me, what dumb is when you have to do all the extra works for your phone just to sync or upgrade, instead of the other way around. But I guess different peolple different stroke, right?

This is the truth. I own a nexus one and iPhone 4 so I can say without bias that android has the better upgrade process and unlike ios the option of installing a custom rom is priceless. I'm looking forward to Cyanogen 6.1 final release. I'm really not caring about 4.2 on iOS, same ***** different day.

I just installed a custom 3.1.3 ispw on an iPhone 2G. Am I missing something?

Figure what out? You act as if your cooking up roms yourself. Your just downloading, reading directions, and installing just like everyone else. That makes you feel superior?

I've been there & done that a thousand times over with WM & Android, and just don't feel like dealing with ironing out all the bugs anymore.

I have been there & done that

@all saying updating is easier on the iPhone b/c you only have to plug it in-

I fail to see how that is 'easier' than hitting OK [to update] when your Android device says there is an update. I don't even need to plug it in.

As you may be able to see, I am posting from my iPhone4. No bias here- only Apple fanboys thinking that custom ROMs are the only way to update Android phones.

Unless you want to say that having the option to install custom ROMs somehow affects an average user's ability to update OTA (which IMO is simpler than opening iTunes and clicking update- not that that's hard either :p)

@matrix07 If you have 'better things to do'- then you'll appreciate the ability to press update, stick the phone in your pocket and do w/e you need to do, rather than having to sit in front of the computer to wait for it to update.

Pls read the whole discussion. It all comes from this

Will your carrier have the update? and if so, will the phone you bought get it? Who knows.

At least, as an iPhone user, I know when 4.2 comes out, I plug in my phone to my computer, and I get the update.

It's not a method of update. It's about a certainty of update. Update wirelessly? great! sign me up. But that's not the point.
I'm all for convenience. Be it iOS or Android or WP7, doesn't matter really. Convenience = sale. I'm not a fan of having to do all the works yourselves like hunting for updates etc. so I just laughed at those who think it's cute to do so and that it's the "big boy's way".

A lot of you guys don't seem to understand, so let me spell it out for you.

If you have a stock (unmodified) Android phone then you don't have to do ANYTHING to get your update except make sure that the phone has at least 50% charge and click a 'Yes' button.

The phone downloads the update by itself (over the air from the cell network) and the phone installs the update by itself. All you do is sit and wait.

When the phone is done, all your pictures, contacts and applications are still there. No need to make a back-up and no need to mess with crappy iTunes or fumbling for your connect cable.

So, if you keep a stock OS on your phone, you never have to do anything.

Someone tell me again how the process with iOS is 'easier'?

*yawn*...another iOS vs Android thread...and of course Tarzanman is present as always.

My guess is Apple still uses iTunes to keep people locked into the iTunes ecosystem. They surely could do it OTA and it would result in a much faster and much larger upgrade base. But they want users to keep relying on iTunes as much as possible for their content and this is just one way they do it.

Are you guys serious? Is this what nerds really bicker about?

Droid nerd - "My phone is nerdier than yours because it takes more nerd power to operate its internal operations and what not"

IP4 nerd - "so what, my phone keeps me from wasting my nerd power so that I can be really like, nerdy at other things that are nerdier and stuff"

Driod nerd - "Punk"

IP4 nerd - "Your Ma"

Droid nerd - "Your Pa"

IP4 nerd - "at least my Dad got high SAT scores"

Droid nerd - "Yeah but your Mother didn't"

IP4 nerd - "Punk"

;)

So, anyone know when it will be released?

I believe iOS 4.0 and 4.1 were released at 10am (PST), its currently 9:30am, so hopefully any minute now. iOS 4.0 was released 2 weeks after the GM version was released to developers, but iOS 4.1 was released just 1 week after the GM version, iOS 4.2 GM was released last tuesday.

iOS 4.0 (10:00am)

iOS 4.1 (10:00am)

good point saving107... Lets see in less than 30min if we get this update already.

That's fine and good for relatively new handsets. Unfortunately carrier support for android handsets seams to drop off more quickly than with iOS. For many android handsets, if you want to stay current, the only option after the first year is custom ROMs.
The only iPhone to be orphaned was released three and half years ago.
The question isn't about OTA vs tethered updates (of course OTA is better), it's about whether official updates are offered at all.

BTW - I do think that Apple needs to decouple device syncing from iTunes. I understand the legacy of iTunes being used to sync iPods, but it hasn't made sense since iTunes began syncing contacts, emails and photo...

wow this is as bad as waiting 20 min before a Apple Keynote .,, LOLLLL
I really hope its today

Not gonna happen today surely.
They only released another build of OSX 10.6.5 today so it's going to be a few days before another build of that at least.
And they wouldn't simultaneously release iTunes 10.1 and iOS 4.2. Or would they. I'd love to eat my words.

Actually they have to release iTunes 10.1 and iOS 4.2 simultaneously (or iTunes before iOS). The new iTunes is required for iPad 4.2 syncing.

Maybe their ready to test out the strength of the new Data Center by releasing iOS 4.2, iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5, we'll find out soon enough.

from apple support-

"Symptoms
In some regions, shortly before or after the daylight saving time (DST) change, repeating alarms created in the Clock app may work incorrectly.

Products Affected
iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (3rd generation), iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (2nd generation)
Resolution
To resolve this behavior for existing alarms, set the repeat interval to Never. You will need to reset these alarms for each day you need them.

After November 7th, 2010, you can set your alarms to repeat again."

So unless iphones are going to sort themselves after the 7th, I'd guess an update is pretty imminent.

Well there is no update yet. no itunes update. no iphone update.
