That's fine and good for relatively new handsets. Unfortunately carrier support for android handsets seams to drop off more quickly than with iOS. For many android handsets, if you want to stay current, the only option after the first year is custom ROMs.
The only iPhone to be orphaned was released three and half years ago.
The question isn't about OTA vs tethered updates (of course OTA is better), it's about whether official updates are offered at all.

Thats not quite true, is it? From what I hear, iOS 4.1 is pretty much unusable on the 3G.
BTW - I do think that Apple needs to decouple device syncing from iTunes. I understand the legacy of iTunes being used to sync iPods, but it hasn't made sense since iTunes began syncing contacts, emails and photo...
I don't think that will happen. Apple has a vested interest in tethering (almost literally) you to their ecosystem.

from apple support-

"Symptoms
In some regions, shortly before or after the daylight saving time (DST) change, repeating alarms created in the Clock app may work incorrectly.

Products Affected
iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (3rd generation), iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (2nd generation)
Resolution
To resolve this behavior for existing alarms, set the repeat interval to Never. You will need to reset these alarms for each day you need them.

After November 7th, 2010, you can set your alarms to repeat again."

So unless iphones are going to sort themselves after the 7th, I'd guess an update is pretty imminent.

The alarms have sorted themselves after the 7th. :p

Delete any existing alarms and create your new alarms (including repeat alarms) and they will now work as normal. :)

I guess it's not happening today. I just can't wait until the calendar glitch is fixed. Its small, but annoying.

Take it from someone who owns a 3G. A lot of users had significant issues with the 3G under 4.0. This was mostly addressed in 4.1 and will see further improvements in 4.2.

Besides, performance issues (which have since been addressed), doesn't negate the fact that an iPhone 3G has continued OS development from the manufacturer. That is 2.5 years of updates and still going. No android phone can say the same. Android handsets which continue to receive OTA updates even one year after release are in the minority.

Mine still going off an hour late, though not a problem if you have a 2 year old in the house...

I was really surprised by the 10.6.5 beta that went out to devs yesterday. Because of that, obviously 10.6.5, iTunes 10.1 and iOS 4.2 won't be released today.

That said, it could be tomorrow. Depends how yesterday's release went over with the testers.

Let's see, Apple has to release:

- iOS 4.2 for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad
- Mac OS X 10.6.5 (for print support)
- iTunes 10.1 (for print support)
- iOS 4.2 for AppleTV (for AirPlay video support)
- Pages/Numbers/Keynote Updates on iPad (for print support)
- XCode 3.2.5 + iOS SDK 4.2 final ("public" developer release)

This is a pretty big software rollout, even by Apple's standards.
With that in mind, I don't think they give a damn about the fact that yet another Android phone is going to be released in the same timeframe. It may fall on the same date but even if, I don't think they'll do so on purpose.

A lot of you guys don't seem to understand, so let me spell it out for you.

If you have a stock (unmodified) Android phone then you don't have to do ANYTHING to get your update except make sure that the phone has at least 50% charge and click a 'Yes' button.

The phone downloads the update by itself (over the air from the cell network) and the phone installs the update by itself. All you do is sit and wait.

When the phone is done, all your pictures, contacts and applications are still there. No need to make a back-up and no need to mess with crappy iTunes or fumbling for your connect cable.

So, if you keep a stock OS on your phone, you never have to do anything.

Someone tell me again how the process with iOS is 'easier'?

the point was, official android updates rely on the carriers, some get it straight away, some don't for ages....... but you haven't read the thread and repeated what the other guy who hadn't read the thread.

Plus the fact the iPhone backs up whilst it does it is a bonus, if the phone breaks, gets lost/stolen or whatnot, when you get a new iPhone you just restore from backup, everything back in place :) with an android phone thats it lost forever... plus what if the OTA update corrupts on install? you'll probably claim it never happens, but it could.

I did a search today on android handsets released in 2009 which offer OTA updates to Froyo. Out of 18 handsets, only one offers an official OTA update (moto droid). This is why custom ROMs are something a typical android user must know how to perform and significantly limits the benefits of OTA updates.

If Apple really wanted to Win big they could release the iPhone on every carrier but Verizon, this would dig into Android's sales, but who knows what they will do, for all we know they may have ink'd a deal with Verizon, personally I am not leaving AT&T. The whole family is now on AT&T, with 3 iP4's and 1 iPhone 3GS and we are all happy, we will see in June what the new iPhone looks like and features it has before we upgrade two of our phones, other than that we are content.

As much as I like AT&T, there are many areas (more so on the west coast) where Verizon is the only reasonable option. These are dense population areas where AT&T will not be able to compete for years do to the lack of available spectrum and stringent zoning regulation. By not being on Verizon, Apple is unable to reach these customers. It further hurts Apple that these areas are also the homes of many tech journalist. This leads to a disproportionate view of the Apple's phone as being unreliable.
In short, it's important to the iPhone's further growth for Apple to be viewed independently from the carriers.
Being on Verizon could also have the side benefit of re-igniting carrier competition.

so what now?
yesterday passed an NO RELEASE WHATSOEVER came from Apple.

I bet you feel kinda dumb, yes?

Why would I? This place is called macrumors for a reason, loads of rumors not everything turns out to be true. I would say you are quite sad bumping an old thread TWICE to get a reaction lol. Guess you do not get out much.;)
