Thanks for making it a choice, Apple*. I love the mute switch. Others like the rotation lock. Now we can all get along.

* Yeah, I know they don't read it. But...what the hell.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs had even reportedly responded to a customer question by noting that the change was permanent and that it would not be a user-configurable option.

Apple appears to have had a change of heart...

I had thought that SJ email was a fake... It seems more likely to me that this option means it was a fake.

Wait, Steve Jobs is giving us a choice of what to do with our switches AND what carrier to use?

Steve is dead, there's an impostor in his place

Apb

iPhone on Verizon,
no data during calls,
WiFi hotspot,
Tim Cook showed up,
and now they're going to let us choose between mute and rotation lock?

Has anyone seen Steve Jobs in the past few weeks? Is he ok?

Sweet !
Guess,4.3 is going to be a great update especially for iPad :)
Can't wait for the final release :D

This is bigger then the Beatles on iTunes. If this was the only feature in 4.3, I would still be happy.

Yay, the change to mute was so annoying I ended up giving feedback to Apple to change it back or make it an option. Thankfully they have listened! Let's go 4.3!

Steve Jobs listened to my email!

Haha. I sent him a message about the new mute/lock switch which seemed redundant since a mute option was already located 1 centimeter from the new mute switch. I used the old rotation lock a lot. Glad to see it may be back soon.

I never use the mute switch as it stands, it's just embedded in my brain to hold the volume buttons - but I'm forever having to bring up that damn tray to lock or unlock the rotation.

Hey just looked at that screen shot and see there is multi-tasking touch gestures....has that always been in the iPad or is that new as well?? That sounds pretty cool and thats the first ive heard of it

Glad it's back. Like others, I got tired of double-click-swipe-tap-click to lock the screen, something I did frequently.

I can only presume given Steve's apparent firm stance on this before that there was a huge consumer backlash. Apple likes to think they know what's best for us and tells us to "take it or leave it", but sometimes they get it wrong, and when we let them have it, they DO listen. So keep on giving them feedback!

This is awesome, should have put that option in from the start instead of creating confusion, but better late than never. Well done.

Now if they could please explain to me why I can only lock the iPhone in portrait mode...

did no one notice the four or five finger muliti-tasking gestures option right below the lock/mute option?

Is it only me, or doesn't anyone else see the multi-gesture features?

I don't have an iPad so I don't know if they were always there
