Apple will do as Apple has done for years with the iPhone and iPod and introduce the iPad2 either on the day it is ready for sale or at most a week ahead of time.

As soon as they reveal it the main press will shout about it everywhere and even mainstream consumers will stop purchasing the iPad1 and wait for iPad2.

Exactly my words. It would also be very silly to send out that "give an ipad for vallentines day" e-mail and anounce or even release the new ipad right around that time. we will not see the new iPad before March or even April.

iOS 5 would be something that is needed. Honycomb dos not look perfect, but it looks a lot more like a tablet OS while the iPad naysayers still go for the old "it´s a big ipod touch" line. (wich it issent because of the different apps... but still, a bunch of squares fit a smal device much more than this big one)

Verizon Hotspot Limitation?

Can I stop incoming calls with Verizon....as this would halt my wifi hotspot (and make my friends unhappy.....thus resulting in no more free coffee from them)?

However, what nobody has mentioned yet (as far as I have read) is Apples Annual event to discuss the next iOS release. To my memory this normally happens in March ahead of the iPhone release in the summer (happened in 2008, 2009 & 2010). What they may do this year is talk about iPad2 release at the same time they talk about iOS5 in last week of March ahead of a 1st week of April launch? Just my guess.

I did, kinda. Didn't they do this last year too?

They could possibly preview the new features of the iOS version for the next iPad, but not preview the hardware itself?

Sunday doesn't make much sense but the Tuesday or Wed (15 or 16) are in the ballpark. I expect an announcement with preorders and delivery in 30 days
But I may be optimistic. I'll hope for the best and wait to see what develops but the evidence is mounting for a roll-out later this month.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; de-de) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

In terms of hot spot - Does the "tethered" devices think they have a Wi-fi connection, and if so, can you then stream media through apps that are Wi-Fi only off of the device?

Tony

It should. My iPod touch allows FaceTime via a portable wifi2mobile router produced by huawei.

WiFi Hotspot is something I really hope comes to iOS 4.3 for all users as I don't get charged any extra to tether. Granted I wont be doing it often and could currently do it via USB or Bluetooth, wifi is just better for me. =]

Have to Totally agree, i was just about writing this and golled called to actuall do some work

can't wait to hit the Pre-order button :apple:

Don't get too excited really. As far as iPad 2 goes, earlier media event date doesn't necessarily mean earlier release date. They could easily announce it in a week or two and as easily release it only in April.

Can't see them announcing iPad 2 next week

They'd murder their Valentines sales they are pushing if they announe it within 10 days.

My guess is March announcement, April release.

I totally agree. Why would they be pushing iPad 1 for Valentine's day with so much marketing and announce iPad 2 before? Makes no sense to announce it next week.

Unexcited about the Hotspot thing.

Here in NYC, I'm lucky to see 800k speeds over AT&T 3G. And they're going to charge me to share that with 5 other devices?

Maybe it's a nostalgia thing; a look back at when we accessed AOL via dial-up over the phone lines.

Besides, anyone who wanted to use their iPhone as a hotspot has already found other ways to do it anyway.

True... But but if done well it would be minus one thing to worry...
Now if only they could out an SBSettings feature... lol

The question is - will iPad2 be released with iOS5 installed, or will it be released with iOS 4.3 and we wait until iPhone5 (June/July 2011) for iOS5 on iPad2?

This has pretty much been my thinking on this as well. As you said, the big question is whether iPad2 will release with iOS5 or not. This is the first year that iOS is synchronized on the iPhone and iPad, so it may require a recalibration of their normal iOS release schedules. Since Apple would most likely want to get a developer build of iOS5 out before they release new devices that use it, maybe they will have an iOS preview event this month (Feb) and then a separate event in March/April to release iPad2 with iOS5? Or they could just have a combined event as you suggested in March and release the iPad2 with some variant of 4.3 to be upgraded to 5.0 in the summer when iPhone 5 is released. Who knows...

It does seem like it would be underwhelming to have a big hurrah about the new iOS5 features and then go, oh here's the iPad2, it doesn't do any of the things we just talked about yet, but it will in a few months. Then again, that's basically what they did with the first iPad and iOS4.

iPad 1 was introduced with a much longer lead time than that. They announced it when they had to submit it to the FCC for public governmental approval - they couldn't hide it any more. Turnaround on the WiFi version was faster, so that came out first, and the 3G version was later.

iPods they can announce the day they're available, as there is little FCC concern. Stick a real radio in there, and non-trivial lead times ensue.
