Apple will do as Apple has done for years with the iPhone and iPod and introduce the iPad2 either on the day it is ready for sale or at most a week ahead of time.

As soon as they reveal it the main press will shout about it everywhere and even mainstream consumers will stop purchasing the iPad1 and wait for iPad2.

However, what nobody has mentioned yet (as far as I have read) is Apples Annual event to discuss the next iOS release. To my memory this normally happens in March ahead of the iPhone release in the summer (happened in 2008, 2009 & 2010). What they may do this year is talk about iPad2 release at the same time they talk about iOS5 in last week of March ahead of a 1st week of April launch? Just my guess.

The question is - will iPad2 be released with iOS5 installed, or will it be released with iOS 4.3 and we wait until iPhone5 (June/July 2011) for iOS5 on iPad2?

That is my guess as well. As much as I'd like to see the iPad 2 now, that leaves a big gap between February and April. The original iPad had a ~60 day gap between announcement and availability, but that was a brand new product line.

March seems good for an April launch of iPad 2. March has also been the time of iOS preview events. It makes sense that they would roll it into one event. "Come see the future of mobile"...Talk about Verizon iPhone, the latest iOS 4.3, Preview iOS 5, reveal the iPad 2 for April release. Boom.

iPad 1 was introduced with a much longer lead time than that. They announced it when they had to submit it to the FCC for public governmental approval - they couldn't hide it any more. Turnaround on the WiFi version was faster, so that came out first, and the 3G version was later.

iPods they can announce the day they're available, as there is little FCC concern. Stick a real radio in there, and non-trivial lead times ensue.

That's not totally true. Companies can, and do, hide their FCC filings. They simply request the filings be hidden by the FCC until a predetermined date.

The reason Apple could announce the first iPad so far ahead of it's release is because it was a new product category. They didn't have to worry about freezing sales of one of their existing products. This time around, Apple would be crazy to announce the iPad2 8-12 weeks ahead of it's release. This would paralyze existing iPad sales, effectively shooting themselves in the foot.

Quite probable. However, couldn't Apple simply announce iPad 2 as some weeks away with prices up say 10% on current and BTW as of tomorrow we're dropping the price of iPad 1 by $50/£50? Keep the sales impetus for iPad 1 going nicely for those who don't need/want the very latest model?

Slightly different purchase decision, but car manufacturers do this all the time in Europe.

Verizon iPhone? Meh. Good for those who don't know any better.

iPad 2? Sweet.

Glad to see Reuters gave us some indication of what the iPad2 contains when they saw it at The Daily event.

I have been expecting an event for February 9th, to line up with the iPad 2 wallpaper preview found in the beta's which have the iCal icon showing the 9th of some month instead of the 27th like in the current previews.

I'll go with this prediction. It's far more possible than any other guess out there.

I'm more interested in iPad 3.

LIAR. You are interested in iPad2... but you'll probably be more interested in iPad3 when iPad2's reveal leaves you feeling underwhelmed.

That's a good point. If they do decide to keep the original iPad around, I suppose they could start offering at a discount immediately.

I don't understand why Gruber thinks that AT&T would offer the personal hotspot via in-app purchase rather than through a plan change, the way they offer tethering now. Wouldn't that give Apple a 30% cut of the upgrade fees?

What are you talking about? He simply states that the personal hotspot feature and in-app purchases will be included in 4.3.

When you enable the personal hotspot feature the first time, I bet a pop up comes up saying it changes your data plan (losing your unlimited data and going to tiered pricing, and you get charged for tethering per month). MyWi is looking better everyday.

Developers usually have a week to send upgrades after the iOS golden master is released. Since Apple usually releases iOS versions on Tuesday, we'll see if the golden master is released on Feb 8th. Then I guess it should be available on 15th to all users.

Exactly my words. It would also be very silly to send out that "give an ipad for vallentines day" e-mail and anounce or even release the new ipad right around that time. we will not see the new iPad before March or even April.

iOS 5 would be something that is needed. Honycomb dos not look perfect, but it looks a lot more like a tablet OS while the iPad naysayers still go for the old "it´s a big ipod touch" line. (wich it issent because of the different apps... but still, a bunch of squares fit a smal device much more than this big one)

I agree. On an app by app basis, NO the iPad is NOT a giant iPod Touch. It's got tons of new UI elements, new gestures, etc. that take advantage of the larger screen.

However, looking at the home screen/apps UI, that's a legitimate criticism. The iPod Touch has a 4x4 grid of icons, status bar, and dock of 4 apps. The lock screen is the time and date, and a slider. How does the iPad use its screen that is some 7 times larger? More rows of apps!!! Oh, and they added a photo slideshow button. Whoever described it as an "app warehouse" is pretty accurate.

The iPad is an excellent first-generation device. But Google has barely given them a year's head start, and the Honeycomb UI (though it has its own pros and cons) makes WAY better use of the tablet form factor and large display. Here's what I'd like to see:

-Allow for the development of front-end at-a-glance information. The most obvious application is weather, but Honeycomb has neat things like a small, scrollable inbox preview. Or quick access to specific books, your calendar/to-do list, or your favorite documents. Use the home screen(s) for more than just 25 app shortcuts! Is the OS X desktop just a wallpaper with 25 Application aliases? No!

-Better notifications!!! Sorry, it's just embarrassing to see WebOS and Android notifications done so elegantly - a little icon or bar slides up from the bottom. Tap or swipe to see more information. Some even had the person's profile pic and the first line of the message. What does Apple, the master of UI, do? BIG PURPLE BOX ON TOP OF EVERYTHING! Emails, SMS, calls, etc. all need better notifications. 3rd party notifications should also be optional (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

-Quick access to settings. A pop-up menu or something where you can quickly go to "Airplane Mode", adjust brightness, sounds, Wi-Fi/bluetooth, etc. without launching the Settings "app" or leaving the home screen.

-Improved voice control. Search the web, contacts, etc. And the ability to search for a certain song!!

Apple never rests, so I'm hopeful for iPad 2 + iOS 5. But this is one of those times where their minimalist philosophy could possibly cause a lack in functionality.

MyWi is the only way to fly for people with Unlimited data plans. How they can expect you to shell out another $20 for the same bits you're already entitled to is beyond reason.

Can't really see a media event where the iPad 2 doesn't feature as the main event.

This.

I can conceive that there would be an event to introduce the new features and to get developers ready for them, rather than a "Here's the iPad guys, shipping in two weeks!" But yeah, it would be a headliner rather than an addendum. That being said, IF this mysterious event is real, we'd have to wait to see the press invite for what Apples little image / strap line tease is.

I think many people hope that iOS 5 brings a huge revamp to the Notification system across all iOS devices. It is sorely needed.

As far as a quick menu, I love SBSettings as much as the next person, but I'm not sure if its such a crucial issue for Apple to tackle. We have to think strictly consumer. The idea of "Pro" features, is basically jailbreaking.

Exciting but weird that they wouldn't make the iPad 2 the main announcement.

So.. correct me if I'm wrong here.. but this would allow me to share my iPhone 4's 3G internet connection with a wifi only iPad? so no need to fork out for a wifi+3g iPad anymore..?
Of course, my data allowance will take a hit I'm sure, but still, quite a saving on the iPad unit cost.

Hmm! That's a great idea! I would hope that it is available on a month-by-month basis, similar to the iPad 3G plan. I think 90% of the time I wouldn't need a 3G plan for my iPad - but it would be useful when traveling. Being able to tether my iPhone and save money on the upfront iPad purchase would be ideal!

And again, the big question for me is: I was lucky enough to get the $30/month (truly) unlimited data plan for the original 3G+wifi iPad. Since I do a lot of streaming media (Slingbox) and VNCing to my home machines, I can easily blow through even a 10 GB/month plan. I'm grandfathered on this--unless I drop the plan, in which case, I can't ever get back in (golden handcuffs situation for sure, but I think I'm getting the best of it).

When iPad 2 rolls out will I be able to take my unlimited data plan to the new model? If so, I'll be buying one as soon as they're available (on AT&T, of course). Speculation seems to vary, with some seeming to think that the plan is really locked to the SIM, which would be great.

If not:mad: I'll have to see which of the limited plans (assuming more or less simultaneous rollout on AT&T and Verizon) is the best bang for the buck. When I'm home, I don't really need the unlimited plans, but I spend about 4 months or so per year on the road--and that's when unlimited really comes in handy.

This is what I was curious about. They won't announce this on a Sunday.... maybe Friday?

You announce bad news on Friday's, especially late Friday afternoon, people do no pay attention to the news over the weekend, and when Monday rolls around, no one remembers what happens on the past Friday.

Good news you announce on Tuesday or Wednesday, Monday is a recap of the weekend and gets lost, Tuesday news organizations are looking for stories.

I don’t care when they announce it, if it doesn’t have a retina display, quad-core processor, front and rear 12MP cameras with Zeiss optics, USB-SD-XD-micro sd-HDMI-VGA-firewire-SCSI-ADB-ethernet-modem ports, work on any carrier, bootcamp to run Windows, Linux, and Android, convertible glossy-matte screen, no visible buttons, gyroscope, telescope, endoscope, accelerometer, barometer, thermometer, hygrometer, 2 GB RAM, support for flash, and a lower price, then I will be waiting in line outside the Motorola store all night the day before the Xoom is released.

In terms of hot spot - Does the "tethered" devices think they have a Wi-fi connection, and if so, can you then stream media through apps that are Wi-Fi only off of the device?

Tony

What do you mean "thinks"? It DOES have a WiFi connection, how a hot spot connects to the internet is irrelevant to the devices that connect to this hot spot. To them it's just like any other WiFi network.

Wouldn't you rather have 4GB of RAM???
