Can I stop incoming calls with Verizon....as this would halt my wifi hotspot (and make my friends unhappy.....thus resulting in no more free coffee from them)?

You don't really get anything free though. It's either you pay for the coffe and use the wifi for yourself without hot spot or pay & share the hot spot and get free coffee. Don't know which way will put a bigger dent in your wallet though. :D

When ATT gets the hotspot feature added, would it then make sense to get an iPad 2 Wifi and teather it to my iPhone 4, rather than getting an iPad 2 3G and a separate data plan?

... Personal Hotspot, where the iPhone becomes a Wi-Fi base station. Up to five laptops, iPod Touches or other gadgets can get online, using the phone as a glorified Internet antenna.

Does "other gadgets" include the Wi-Fi iPad?

Tethering question

Please forgive the question, especially if it has been asked a hundred times on this site. I'm really not all that tech savvy. I know that you can't be on a call and use data at the same time on a Verizon smartphone... calls take priority. Can I also assume that if my computer is tethered using a Verizon iPhone and a call comes in, that I will lose my WiFi connection?

Thanks!

The connection will drop if you accept the call, as far as I know.

MyWi is the only way to fly for people with Unlimited data plans. How they can expect you to shell out another $20 for the same bits you're already entitled to is beyond reason.

I totally agree. I have been paying ATT since day 1 on the iPhone for unlimited data. Why should I have to pay extra to share that "unlimited" data? I used Netshare for a while but it was a PIA to configure. I'll buy an app to make it easy to do but "upgrade" my plan by $40 a month to Data Pro to get tethering seems totally unreasonable. I know my ATT plan never had any stipulation about tethering and my use might go up occasionally (it would only be handy on vacation etc.) but at these rates, it seems like highway robbery. Why can't they at least offer tethering through an app with in-app purchasing for a period of time?

Data usage measurement is out of the question. Did you see the lawsuit? I know from personal use of a Verizon USB modem last summer. If you DL a couple web pages, it says you used 5MB! What self respecting web designer would make a page over a hundred kilobytes??? They must know techies aren't ignorant.

This will change over time. Competition and the utility of such a thing will make it a key point in determining which carrier you use. ATT, I might just consider switching...

So.. correct me if I'm wrong here.. but this would allow me to share my iPhone 4's 3G internet connection with a wifi only iPad? so no need to fork out for a wifi+3g iPad anymore..?
Of course, my data allowance will take a hit I'm sure, but still, quite a saving on the iPad unit cost.

It depends if you want your phone bill to be $20.00 more expensive every month. I am trying to decide myself but I want my bill cheaper so I think I will still get the 3G iPad. Also with the 3G I can just turn the data on or off whenever I want and only pay for that instead of $20.00 more every month that I can NOT turn on or off.

Can't see them previewing the iPad 2 a month before launch unless they have run out of stock of the current one already and want to get some pre-orders.

Can't really see a media event where the iPad 2 doesn't feature as the main event.

Ya this smells a bit funny. If anything it would be the iPad 2 event and they simply mention the couple new features in iOS 4.3 during the event. Either way there has to be more to this. Apple is NOT going to have an event to announce a point release of iOS lol!

What else is on the horizon? Maybe something with MobileMe and the data center as well that ties into features of iPad 2 and iOS 4.3???

They could possibly preview the new features of the iOS version for the next iPad, but not preview the hardware itself?

I don't think so!

So on a VZW iPhone if you are sharing a hotspot and the phone rings, everyone gets bumped off of the network (not the connection to the device itself)?

I imagine only if you accept the call. When I had a Droid X I would have to accept the call to stop data use. But yes, if someone accepts the call everyone will be bumped off (imagine with no data connection the Hotspot feature would turn off as well).

Why wouldn't it? The hot spot created by the iPhone will show up and function just like any other WiFi network. Unless Apple enforces some iOS limitation like "The iPad shall not connect to a WiFi network with an SSID of 'iPhone'" I don't see how it wouldn't work

"The iPad shall not connect to a WiFi network with an SSID of 'iPhone'"

Come to think of it, maybe this is true seeing as the personal hot spot feature doesn't seem to even allow you to choose the SSID. Why wouldn't they allow you to choose this?, seems like it will be trouble when you want to connect to your personal hotspot and 20 "iPhone" shows up in the list of networks

Isn't the iOS 5.0 preview event supposed to be in Marxh, if the pattern follows that of previous years?

They could release the 4.3GM and detail some of the features in 5.0 and show it running on new iPad 2 hardware.

Just my guess.

We call it the iPad 2. What's Apple going to call it?

Well, iPad HD is certainly out of the question. It could be just iPad [second generation], following the same naming convention as Apple computers. That is, the name doesn't change, it's just understood that it's the "new" iPad.

But I think Apple will call it iPad 2.

Yep I see no reason they couldn't release 4.3 within the 10days for subscriptions and still wait till march for the iOS5 preview/roadmap event which would include iPad2 release. Although from some of the comments from apple regarding subscriptions it seems as like an event is coming very soon.

Is this coming to T-Mobile Germany as well? (personal hotspot) I would love it.

C'mon apple!!!! I cant wait for the ipad 2!!!! I dont think it will be a "One more thing..." thing tho. Its got to be the MAIN event. ipad deserves just as much as his parent.

I hope we get to see Steve introduce the ipad2. I wont be the same without him AND that way we get to see how he is doing.

:apple: ipad 2 GO!!!!

It's one thing to pre-announce a product that is entirely new, such as when they announced the original iPad. However there is no reason for them to announce the iPad 2 so far in advance when they are still trying to sell the first generation model. They only do that when their hand has been forced, such as in the case of the iPhone 4.

I don’t care when they announce it, if it doesn’t have a retina display, quad-core processor, front and rear 12MP cameras with Zeiss optics, USB-SD-XD-micro sd-HDMI-VGA-firewire-SCSI-ADB-ethernet-modem ports, work on any carrier, bootcamp to run Windows, Linux, and Android, convertible glossy-matte screen, no visible buttons, gyroscope, telescope, endoscope, accelerometer, barometer, thermometer, hygrometer, 2 GB RAM, support for flash, and a lower price, then I will be waiting in line outside the Motorola store all night the day before the Xoom is released.

Well, that was one of the dumbest comments I have read in a while

I have been expecting an event for February 9th, to line up with the iPad 2 wallpaper preview found in the beta's which have the iCal icon showing the 9th of some month instead of the 27th like in the current previews.

Me too! Feb. 9th is my Bday!

Yeah sure they'll announce it months before its available...

... and if you believe that I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

They will NOT announce the iPad 2 until shortly before its availability. Doing so would nearly halt sales of the existing product. Osborne learned that was a bad idea decades ago. Apple isn't that stupid.

Since the last one came out in April, this one will probably come out in April too. The announcement will be SHORTLY before that. You'll see supply shortage rumors before it happens. And it will be on a Tuesday not a Sunday.

Jeez, Apple is predictable and clockwork, and this site of all sites should at least be able to track it.

You know what I heard? I heard we'll see new iPods in the summer this year, unlike every other ****ing year when Apple did it in September. Spread that one too why don't you?

i lol'd

anyway, i agree with what one of the posters was saying on page 3 of this thread in regard to the iOS for iPad and how it should be more tablet-focused. reading that post was interesting to think about how the ipad should look. i think the problem with it now is that it probably shouldn't look exactly like the ipod touch/iphone OS. as much as it is nice to have the same OS, the iPad truly does deserve something different. the spaced out apps on the homescreen are a bit ridiculous, i've always been turned off by that.

and why can't there be widgets like weather on the front? or quick pieces of information from your messages when you scroll around it like what you were saying about honeycomb? that seems logical, given the real estate of the ipad 2's screen.

iOS is perfect for the ipod touch/iphone, but for ipad, i think apple should do something more radical and really push it as a tablet design instead of giving people a reason to call it a giant ipod touch. i know it'll never happen, but maybe apple should fragment the iOS or tweak it/allow its users to customize it themselves..just a little bit.

as for the "event" and announcement? i highly doubt this rumor. who the hell is macnotes.de anyways? as far as i can tell they have no reputation aside from saying the ipad 2 will be released in early april. BIG SECRET GUYZ! i don't see apple coming out with an event for iOS 4.3, especially since they took away the gestures that everyone seemed to love, what the hell would they show off besides "hey look, we can do subscriptions now for your magazines/newspapers, sweeeet huh?" i think people are reading much more into this iOS release because it's about that time of year for everyone to speculate on the next-gen ipad and when that'll come out. but really when it comes out, it'll be nothing major in the scope of things to come.

I don't think 2G iPad will be introduced until after Valentine's Day.

Alas, the more I think about it, the more I think Apple will NOT bump up the resolution of the display screen beyond 1024x768. :( But who knows....

I do think the 2G iPad will be lighter than the current model, mostly because the lower weight means you can hold it for longer periods of time--a big selling point of e-book readers like the Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook and competitive tablet computers like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. And the display will now have a new coating to make it easier to read in bright conditions.

The iPad can use the iPhone's wi-fi hotspot. When the iPad is connected the little link symbol appears on the iPad where the wi-fi logo usually goes.
