the last 2 iOS release's have been carrier exclusive

4.2.6 Verizon
4.3 AT&T

Apple will continue the trend

There is absolutely no reason to believe that they will continue the trend because Apple isn't going to waste their time on maintaining two builds. They'll catch up under 4.3 and it'll be fine from there.

Also, for every CDMA iPhone sold there likely have been 5-10 GSM iPhones. Do you think they'll screw over every customer in every country the iPhone is sold in outside of the Verizon users? No.

Stop trolling. You are incorrect. There are over 100 carriers worldwide...Apple is not skipping carriers for every other release. 4.3 is not supported by Verizon because of issues with Qualcomm (maker of the CDMA chipset). It will catch up.

It's true... I just did it 5 min ago.

WiFi was OFF on my iPad, turned on BT and chose my iPhone 4 from the list. Checked email/twitter etc, worked wonderfully.

Is the same true of the iPod Touch?

Is the same true with any generic BT 3G mobile?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8F190 Safari/6533.18.5)

Seriously, who cares? I can't imagine sharing a 3G connection with even 3 devices... Let alone 5.

How automatic is it? Does it take a while to connect, or is it pretty much ready to go within seconds of unlocking the iPad?

Do you have to manually connect every time?

It seems that my iPhone 3GS and iPad are staying connected by the bluetooth connection even after they are locked. After unlocking the iPad I have immediately access to the Internet. No delay whatsoever.

However if you turn the hotspot off and latter back on, you have to always manually connect your iPad to the iPhone by simple taping in the iPad bluetooth menu. Which is fine with me, since I don't want to waste the iPhone battery by iPad automatic connection after the hotspot is turned on for some other reason (for example sharing the Internet with a notebook).

I'm having trouble getting outraged over this "limitation." I've been carrying a MiFi for a year and I've never used it with three devices at the same time. A laptop and iPad, yes, but that's only two.

Not an issue for 98% of customers.

If you REALLY had to you could tether your laptop and then create a NAT WiFi network from the laptop out to as many devices as you like. But like you said, who cares? I am guessing that most phones allow 5, but Apple is reserving two of those for Bluetooth and/or USB tethering.

Sprint offers a 4G MiFi with 5 clients allowed and Clear's version offers 8. Do you think anybody is saying "I've gotta get the one that allows 8!" -- i doubt it. The only correction I would make for you is changing your "98% of customers" to "99.8% of customers".

tethering and unlimited data plan

Anybody know if you still have to pay additional $$ for tethering from iPhone 4 if you still have the unlimited data plan grandfathered in?

Seems like it shouldn't be an extra cost, but I doubt it, knowing AT&T...

My iPhone 4 in my carrier can't even provide a good 3G Data connection for itself, let alone 3 laptops. Mexico Telcel really sucks!!!!

Apple will continue the trend

The first launch of the iPad had its own iOS release. It was eventually unified with the iPhone releases.

The first launch of Apple TV 2 had its own iOS release, and they have unified that.

The first launch of the CDMA iPhone had its own iOS release.

You're right, Apple will continue the trend they've established, but the trend isn't towards carrier exclusive builds...

Enabling tethering, or hotspot, voids the unlimited data plan and starts 2 GB + 2 GB plan.

Why not just get an iPhone???

Cost? NZ$387 for the cheapest iPod Touch vs $919 for the cheapest iPhone. I'd happily put some of that $532 difference towards a "dumbphone" with tethering, and then I'd still be able to use the iPod for everything other than calling and texting.

Having used the beta since the first version, on the first day I needed 4 spots and I was wondering why the 4th wouldn't work. I later assumed it was 5 for the USA, and 3 for the other countries. It's too bad, sometimes families are big and travelling in a car with more than 3 people... could be a problem. It's a shame it's not 5 for everyone.

Free Tethering

Luckily, I got the HandyLight app before Apple pulled it from the AppStore. I can use my iPhone 4's 3G connection and no more money going to AT&T!

Certainly not the average family though, that would need 4 laptops or more - connected to wi-fi, running at once in a car. Obviously (or hopefully) the driver isn't on a computer. Maybe it's time for a more sociable family drive. But of course, different strokes for different folks.

havent jailbroken yet but AT&T makes me want to with their $20 tethering plan and having to downgrade to a 2 gb data plan...

Well actually tethering adds another 2GB of data... for a total of 4GB a month. For most of us that should be plenty.

This is good news! Might save just a few bucks by getting the tethering plan for my iPad 3G. :D

As I remember with the AT&T data plans you get free access to their wifi hotspots, so how does tethering work when one is at an AT&T wifi hotspot? Is tethering 3G only?
