I assume you meant "easier access to wifi" what exactly do you mean by that? How could the iPhone make accessing wifi any easier?

More keyboard layouts? Which layouts specifically are you looking for? There are tons and tons of different keyboard layouts already. The only one that seems to be lacking is the Dvorak keyboard, and research shows there is no real benefit to that layout.

Which multitouch gestures are you looking for, what would they do and are they reasonable on such a small display? You wouldn't really be able to use any of those gestures operating the phone one handed, by the way.

Icon updates? As in live updating icons or simply some new icons?
I mean that you could easier turn the wifi on/off
The only keyboard layout i'm missing is the japaneese handwrite regognizer
The mulitouch gestures are going to be like on the ipad 4.3
And of cource somi new icon pictures

Dynamic icons + Data syndication

Apple seems invested in the app icon grid format so I don't expect them to ditch it in iOS5 but they could refresh the look and make it more useful.

Dynamic app icons could be a part of that. For example, the icon for the weather app could show live data of the current weather and the iPod icon could show the currently playing song' album art.

Another reimagining of the OS could involve creating a one stop shop aggregate of information from different apps. While I'm overall pleased with iPhone and iOS, I'm attracted to the concept of Windows Phone 7's live tiles. Perhaps Apple could implement something of this nature on the lock screen or the screen to the left of the first home screen (search would be pushed further left). Essentially, what I'm proposing is that in this screen, you'd see your latest e-mails, upcoming appointments, Social network activity (i.e. Twitter and Facebook) and whatever other info you'd like to collect from your apps and display on this screen.

iOS is about to enter its fifth iteration. I think it's about time to refresh the look of the OS. As I've said in the first post of this thread, adding features isn't enough to justify a full version number upgrade, considering many of them have been added in point updates. A major refresh is in order.

Serious question here - do we know iOS5 is coming this summer? Or is this just assumed as a part of the next ver of the iPhone.

Like some others, i tend to think that the next iPhone will be more of a 3g to 3gs sort of iterative update- with the next major update perhaps coming in 2012. Total guess on my part of course. I do see all the great competition out there so maybe that accelerates the rate of change. I'd love to have a complete overhaul of the OS this year- but also want to be realistic.

As others have mentioned, we've seen some pretty significant updates over the past year. I think issue is most of these changes have been sort of behind the scenes - while the visual appearance of the UI has not really changed since the first iPhone came out. I think the good news is that changes the UI's front end are much easier than making changes to the underlying mechanics of the OS.

iOS 4.3 has shown that Apple is willing to make big changes in a point update. The addition of WiFi Personal Hotspot, AirPlay from 3rd parties and 4 finger gesture controls are not the kind of additions you'd expect from a "maintenance update".

So what does this mean for iOS5?

It appears that we should expect some ground breaking changes in iOS5. Discuss.

Not that big, and I think you are confusing point updates with the double point updates. Just about every "point" update has added something interesting beyond just a "fix"; 4.3. wasn't the first. For example, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 (double point updates) were maintenance updates for fixes only, but 4.1 introduced Game Center and added HD video upload over WiFi, HDR imaging to the iPhone's camera and many other things along with fixes. 4.2 added Airplay, new text alert tones, etc. So the 4.3 additions are just standard updates for a point update like this from Apple... and yes the full 5.0 update should be a nice major update as history has proven, but don't count out the point updates as they have always had nice surprises (3.2 added iBooks, 2.2 added Street View to Maps, and so on. Even the very first "point" update, 1.1 added the iTunes Music Store!)

I think you and others should familiarize yourself with what exactly has been added to every single update as many of you seem to forget how much the OS has evolved with just about every point update: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_version_history

What do i wish will be in the next update?
Widgets, a nice notification system, something like Lockinfo (on jailbroken phones), and expanded Folders so i can put in more than 12 apps.
Hardware wise, i'd like a bigger screen.

What do you mean 'better notification system'?

I only have one wish for ios, better notifications system.

Hey,

I was looking through the forum and notice people keep asking for a better notification system, what specifically are you looking for? I'm just curious what you mean.
