I have an iPhone 3G. Is it normal that I don't have folders ? I thought I'd at least get this feature. As it is, iOS4 doesn't bring much for me.

Is there a page where you can see new features available by iphone model ?

Thank you.

lukewarm

I downloaded iOS4 for my 3GS this morning - it took a grand total of 11 minutes for the whole thing. No congestion. No worries!

So far it hasn't been breathtaking. It's nice to choose wallpaper but that's only cosmetic. The sort by places option in the photos is way cool.

But on the other hand, my xe currency app has a bug in which a keyboard appears, rendering it virtually useless. And I have to say, calling the 'multitasking' feature 'multitasking' is taking it a bit far. As other users have found, it just creates a great list of apps you use. There's no way I know of switching off an app without it being added to the 'multitasking' bar. In these two respects I'm not so impressed.

Hold down an icon until they shake, then drag one of them into another, and there you will have have folders. That simple.

Thanks, that is very nice indeed :)

I was wondering why I didn't have the 'Utilitie' icon which I thought was needed to create folders...

You don't need to worry about the task manager and the apps piled up in that list. I kept messing with it and deleting apps for the first few days, but that just defeats the purpose. It REALLY can (and Should) be used like Steve said, just dont worry ab it. So for the past few days, I've just let iOS4 manage them and guess what? No hit on my battery life, and everything works smooth. Give it a try!

Just finished downloading now, waiting for it to install. Looking forward to an all in one inbox and multitasking:)

This thing is a hog. I've done nothing this morning and I'm at 84%. Nothing is running in the background. I took it off the charger at 7:30am and it's now 9:11am. I was on a call for about 15 minutes. Geez.

I read through half the thread and gave up....

has anyone had any issues with the ipod function working with their navigation stereo system (from factory)?

If it was jailbroken before - I had same issue, had to download AT&T APN from http://www.unlockit.co.nz, that will fix 3G Data. Then MMS fix - http://is.gd/cYk4g

On another note - another new iOS4 enhancement I noticed: when map images load in maps app - they fade in now rather than just appearing.

Wonderful. In exchange for some nice folder abilities I now have an iPhone that was initially bricked, turns off every 5 minutes and has severe performance issues.

Good god if this is how it is I might actually go back to macs!

Failure on my 3G

I had the upgrade fail on the "restore." After giving up trying to restore my data, I decided to just setup which apps, photos, music, etc and do a sync. At first music refused to sync, and would throw a bunch of error message, but eventually it would sync ( and down-grade music to 128kbps ).

After letting that run all night, I check my iphone on in the morning. Now none of the third party apps will run. They will start and quit. Reminds me of the iTune DRM problem that occurred when iTunes was updated way back when, for the original iPhone.

I have music, which is all I need to survive until Thursday. So it's not worth my time to try to fix it. Apple just loses a few karma points with me.

EDIT: I reset the phone back to factory settings with iOS4 on it, then restored the backup it made for the upgrade and it works now.

Birthday Calendar

I like the idea of the birthday calendar. Today I create separate events for birthdays so it would be nice to manage it through the actual contact. Two issues:
1. The birthday calendar is using the same color as another one of my calendars so it makes it confusing.
2. There is no way to set a reminder for the contact added birthdays. I need reminders about a couple days out so I can get a card/gift if necessary.

Any suggestions?

when i "check for updates" on my iPhone i only see 3.1.3 available..

(i am currently still running 3.1.2)

I confirmed that a phone running 3.1.3 sees iOS 4.0...

Looks like apple wants me to update to 3.1.3 then go to 4.0.. not just go directly to the most recent release of their OS for some reason..

Ideas??

Definitely not glitch free - unified inbox

Noticed quite a few glitches already. Especially glitches related to the unified inbox (or maybe its caused by multitasking).

For example, if you open an email to change its status from unread to read, then exit the mail app, double click on home button to get list of running apps, delete the mail app from the list... and hey presto when you return to the home screen it shows the email as unread. Happens over and over again. It would be nice to read an email and have it marked as read. Any suggestions re: workarounds for this glitch?

jailbreak options

so now that the RedSn0w jailbreak is out, does this mean it's safe for me to upgrade the OS on my 3G iPhone to 4.0. My intention is to sell it on thursday (already found a buyer), and so far I have held back from upgrading because I wanted to make sure I sold it in a jailbreak-able condition so to speak should the purchaser be looking to use it for another carrier?

any suggestions?

new kid

yeah I'm a new kid.

I read over the parts of the thread and went through my settings but I couldn't seem to find a battery percentage for the iPod Touch 3rd Gen using iOS 4. Is this even an option for this model?

Thanks :)

End Call button changed

Did anyone notice the end call button now just says "End" instead of "End Call"? If someone pointed this out already...then sorry. But if not, then I feel cool that I "discovered" a change on my own :) Pat on the back for me.

Can't wait for new iphone in two days! :)

Hey,

I have a iPhone 3G and trying to get the iOS 4 installed.. But ever since I upgraded to the new 9.2 iTunes it no longer recognizes my iphone? I've un-installed and re-installed 10 times, even removing all traces by going in the registry deleteing keys, and removing all itunes folders throughout my c drive.

Not sure what is going on but I've narrowed it down to windows 7 reads the deice as a digital camera device and not an iPhone, windows then automatically installs digital camera drivers. When I go to device manager to manually update the driver to the correct apple mobile device 64bit driver, windows goes BONG the correct driver could not be found (even though I triple checked the files are in the folder) I have a core i7 with a p55 intel chipset. and noticed others are having a similar issue, but not the same as mine, maybe it has to do with that? so I updated my bios, and chipset drivers tot he latest ones just incase, still no beans!

I've searched over google a hundred times, read 13 articles in apple support, and spent 45 minutes talking to a moron at apple care who said they dont officially offer support for windows 7 when he couldnt fix the issue.

I'm posting on macrumors in hopes of finding someone who knows how to help me!

I'm very worried as my iphone 4 will arive on thursday and if I cannot get itunes to recognize it, I will not be able to activate it! FML!

Multitasking UI

Multitasking is certainly welcome, but I’m not sure I like the way the UI was implemented.

  • Double clicking the home button is lame.
  • You can’t tell which apps are running without double clicking the home button to get the task manager or whatever it’s called. As soon as you know it, you find out that you have a dozen apps running.
  • Switching apps via the task manager also involves a couple more steps than by switching by tapping the app icon where normally is. At least you can also switch apps that way.

I would have done away with the task manager altogether. To show which apps are running, have a green light indicator in the upper right of the icon for those apps, and just tap the app icon to switch. Hold icon and tap to quit. More intuitive…and fewer steps.
