Does Strength give you information on which cell tower you are connecting to? I understand it will give you the dB level of the cell signal. What else does it give you? I'm having trouble downloading it now.

OK, I downloaded Strength from Cydia. It is a nice app that I recommend. It provides a simple drawing that indicates the cell signal strength and the corresponding number of bars.

The FieldTest app is a whole 'nother thing. It is a tool for technicians and gives more information than you will ever need or understand. I believe it will show you the current tower and the other nearest towers. However, I only have one tower here! Screenshots of the the only page from Strength and one of many pages on FieldTest.

Field Test Modes are incredibly important to operators.

I wonder if "Profiles" are powerful enough to install the FieldTest.app and associated plist files mentioned in this thread? Alternatively, Apple could offer a SpringBoard-visible version of FieldTest.app to operators.

Can't get deb file

You need Diskaid or Phoneview or other tools, you can also install the deb fileFieldTest_iOS4-v1.deb, but the phone needs to be JB first.

Aneagle, any chance you could re-upload? Rapidshare is telling us that the file has been downloaded the maximum of 10 times. It would be much appreciated. Otherwise, could someone tell us how to get the iOS 3.1.2 files that are mentioned?

I did this:
-copy FieldTest.app from var/stash/Applications of 3.1.2 to var/stash/Applications of iOS4
-copy fieldtest.plist, fieldtest68.plist and specialkeys.plist from System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framwork/Support of 3.1.2 to System/Library/Frameworks/CoreTelephony.framwork/Support of iOS4

*3001*12345#* Call now shows the FieldTest pages.

I put an icon.png into Fieldtest.app and delete the last key of its info.plist to make FieldTest icon shown on the screen.

PS. The correct code should be *3001#12345#*

I'm having the same problem macse30 was having (btw, I agree, the SE/30 was the best Mac ever, imho).

FieldTest launches, flashes its screen briefly and then crashes. I tried the chmod command on the .app. Still no go. I've tried invoking it both from the icon on the home screen and the dial code. Same result either way.

iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0 + jailbreakme.com

Works on my iPhone 4, but I needed to reboot otherwise I just got an empty screen. It shows a lot of "Unknown" values though, don't know if I had that before.

How do you copy files to the phone?

I have a recently purchased iPhone 4 (my first iPhone), running iOS 4.0.1 and now jailbroken with jailbreak.me

I would really like to install Field Test, as per aneagle's great discovery. I have downloaded the zipped files from this thread.

But, how do I copy the files? I would really like a lamer on this, because I am a total beginner.

I enabled SSH on the iPhone and can log on to the root of the phone in terminal. I can also cd my way to the /var/stash/Applications folder. But I am unable to copy files from my mac to the phone. Can the scp command be used? Could someone perhaps post some code or an instruction to follow.

I also tried to install mobileterminal (thanks, macse30), but failed since I don't know how to copy the files for v426 (the v364 available in Cydia does not work on iOS4) to the iPhone - I guess it is really the same problem as above.

So, what do I do from the point where I have

Code:
My-iPhone:~ root#

??

Thanks a million in advance!

it worked using Transmit (trial version) and chmod -R -v 755 FieldTest.app

I found a solution and now have Field Test working on my iPhone 4.

I used Transmit to copy the files to the right locations on the phone and then

Code:
chmod -R -v 755 FieldTest.app

from Terminal.

Thanks a bunch to both aneagle and macse30 (but I still would like to be able to do things like this from Terminal, and not having to rely on all sorts of interfaces which usually cost money...)

Hi guys, can you help me with this. I followed all the steps (inclueded the chmod) but when i start fieldtest (by the icon or by *3001#) it starts but no info is displayed. its all empty.
I have a 3GS iOS4 JB with jailbreakme...

thanks a lot

Empty or just no cell info?

@zelino: You get nothing at all when you start Field Test, or just no information from the menu items?

I get all the menus but precious little information from them. For instance, when I enter "GSM Servicing Cell", I get "unknown" for all the parameters - but I suppose this is due to restrictions by my network operator.

Is this what happens when you run Field Test?

FWIW, I remember that the old Nokia phones had a setting to get cell info displayed. It never worked for me here in Belgium (network Proximus), but cell info would suddenly show up on some foreign networks, when I traveled.

Field Test icon changed when I installed Mobileterminal v426

The icon I had for the Field Test app after installation was blank / white, just with the title underneath.

I now also managed to install MobileTerminal 4.26 (for iOS4) by creating a /root/var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall folder and drop MobileTerminal-426.deb there, using Transmit.

After rebooting the iPhone twice I now have not only the Terminal app (working) but also a new icon for the Field Test app, with a green oscillator curve. Nice :)

Mine is also completely blank with just 'FieldTest' and the refresh button. No menus of any kind or entries in the list.

iPhone 4 on 4.0.1 and I've checked permissions on the FieldTest.app and they're already 755. I've rebooted etc as well.

I haven't tried the deb file though, maybe this method installs it properly?

I'm on 4.1 the latest beta I think it's 3 and I have Feild test mode but once I call a screen pops up but I have only the dbs at the top next to the att symbol. Nothing else only that and a refresh button. There is only a white screen with the lined slots for things to select but that's it. It that normal just wondering.

Edit: just found a way to quickly see and switch between DBS and bars on ur status bar. If u go into Feild test mode and u can tap the bars and they change to DBS. You can keep doing that but if u then hold the sleep button till the slide to power offs comes up and then hold the home button and letgo of the sleep button (basically a respring) u can now switch whenever u want without having to go into Feild test mode

Field test for open to all networks model, no cydia installed

Hello,

I have a 3GS under iOS 4.0.2, open to all networks version (without jailbreak), no cydia installed. i need the test field mode for my job (network operator technician). Can you help me please about copying these files into my model?

Thank you :)

I'm having the same problems as senthilnatha.

I have found an alternative solution. For anyone unable to use this technique, buy Signal from Cydia. It's $5, has a nice GUI and lots of useful tower data. Well worth the cost for anyone needing this for work or research and cannot wait for Apple to give it back to us (if ever).

Signal from Cydia

I also would recommend Signal from Cydia. I've been very impressed with the app. It is very easy to use, even easier than the former field test app from Apple. However, it has much, if not more information. In my opinion, Signal is much easier than hacking the OS to install the old field test too.

Its back in 4.1 but you get a blank screen. However the cellular signal bar changes from er bars to db

FieldTest.app is not fully compatible with iP4?

FieldTest.app is now back in iOS4.1 but Apple remove the FeildTest.plist in CoreTelephony.framework/Support so by typing the usual code it only shows the signal level. I try using the old plist from 3. and it becomes interesting: the 3GS shows full FieldTest with all pages while on the iP4 the menu is there but the page Neighboring Cells is blank, GSM Serving cell shows MA, BSIC, MA Dedicated ARFCN and C2 Value, the rest is unknown. Many network parameters are missing, the Neighboring Cells is blank while Signal.app shows minimum parameters for all 6 cells: ARFCN, BSIC, RSSI, C2 and Cell ID.

It is clear that FieldTest.app we found in iOS4 is not fully compatible with the iP4 hardware.

Mine still works, shows all the info that has before. Towers and everything. I wonder if its an area thing? I don't know why everyone else's wouldn't work but mine does still. Strange though.

Your phone is a 3GS or iP4? and which one of the iOS?
