When did you last backup? If it was a while ago then it will be slow

Not true. It does a fresh backup, doesn't matter when you last backed up. I did a back up this morning before iOS 4 was released, and now my backup has been running for about 45 minutes and I'm only on the c. I have about 14 gb used up on my 16 gb 3G. My Macbook Pro has an SSD with 8 gb of RAM.

Ok well here is something weird my 3G is taking forever to backup but my 3GS is 90% done in only 10 minutes.

I hope it is not trying to back up every, apps and music included. I am pretty sure it cannot be as it does not seem Apple's style.

Aside from being redundant - when they are already in my iTunes library and can be restored from there - I do not have enough free space on my hard drive. It should be a pretty obvious thing to check that first and give an error in advance.

Looking in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup a new folder was created when I started the update (the original backup folder was renamed with a '1' at the end). Unfortunately it has been going an hour and six minutes but only copies 278MB.

Seems to me it is more the speed of backup rather than amount of data being copied which is the problem.

Michael.

i have 24MB left on my 8GB 3G. I have been backing up now for 2 hours and the little green bar is MAYBE 4 pixels wide. Even that is being optimistic.

Honestly, i hate iTunes and the whole syncing/backing up process. I hate everything about it. I've never had a fast backup. I think the shortest one i've ever had may have been 4-5 hours.

EDIT: And for this reason, i have not plugged my phone into the comp once since the 3.0 firmware. Would this be causing it to take forever?

Oh dear, I've been stuck at this for nearly an hour...

iTunes is still active, and the progress bar on the iPhone is just past the :apple: logo

The progress bar is not accurate, at least it wasn't in my case.

Hung around as a little spec for over an hour then it jumped to restoring iphone.

Also, I don't think it matters if you backed up recently. I restored mine this morning and still had to do a full backup.

30 minutes

My upgrade took 30 minutes from start to finish. Downloaded in about 4 minutes, updated, restarted, ready to go quick and easy. I started the download about 20 minutes after it was released.

Someone else in the office started the update without having had synced+backed up their phone in a while, so I tried a full sync+backup before starting the ios4 update+backup and it doesn't look like that makes any difference.

Is applying the update meant to restore the phone to factory settings during the update process?

I'm not sure whether something went wrong or if that's what's meant to happen.

It also activated it again with "iPhone activated" showing up on the screen and is now restoring the backup...

Backup Crashed

I started the process at 12:15pm CST. My backup just stopped and went away around 2:45pm CST.

Now I'm starting all over again. :( I did get an incoming call half-way through the backup. Didn't do anything at the time of the call, but I have a feeling it disrupted my backup. I now have my iPhone in Airplane mode. Hoping it will actually work this time.

Ouch. Glad I backed up before updating!!!! Update took about 2.5 hours and then errored out – then asked to restore from the previous iPhone. It's now doing a full restore.

It sounds like these problems may be only with the 3G. Anyone with the 3GS having these problems?

CPU maxed!

I am also experiencing a slow backup upgrading to iOS4. I have an 8GB 3G with 7GB used so not a lot of data. Mind you I am using an older laptop and the CPU is pinned at 100%. Don't know what it could be doing during a backup to take that much CPU power. Looking in the

C:\Documents and Settings\darkwingZ24\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\Mobile Backups

there is 238 bytes and a single file "RestoreState.plist"

I didn't have this much trouble upgrading to iOS 3.0! Grrrr. I was more worried about the slow download times, but the download was fast! This is just ridiculous.

2 hours 45 minutes later and my phone is applying the firmware. Finally.

The backup folder it was creating has also disappeared, the last update time on the original folder was from when I synced my phone earlier today.

What a horrible painful procedure.

I have a 3GS and the backup process is insanely slow! I have been waiting for about 4 hours now, and it is no where to being finished! (see attachment)

I'm not really sure what to do at this point except to wait it out, unless there is another solution? Also, I'm thinking that this backup is being painfully slow because normally when I sync up my iPhone, it takes the longest time to backup, and sometimes, it doesn't even back up and just sticks on the diagonal lines. I usually just X out of that because I'm in a hurry, so I'm thinking maybe that is why this backup for iOS 4 is taking so freakin' slow.

Any ideas?

just had to cancel the backup of iOS 4 after 5 hours!! an important phone call came in... darn it. Guess I'll do this overnight, and hope it'll be done by the morning? Yeah, I doubt it.

I just updated to iOS4 on a laptop i don't normally sync with so the backup took almost 3 hours ....

Was kinda mental waiting that long
