I'm now 2.5 hours into the 4th try at backup and i'm only to the 'c' in back up. This is ******g stupid! Apple screwed the pooch on this one! Big Time!

I am on my 5th hour and the green bar is STUCK about 5% across on "Backing Up Joe's Iphone...".

After wasting over 12 hours last week trying to purchase an iPhone 4, I didn't think Apple could infuriate me more but they have found a way.

Way to treat your customers, Cupertino. Completely unprepared - once again - and inept.

Cancel Backup

If I manually backup my iPhone 3g then cancel the automatic backup, would by iPhone restore in iOS4, or would my manual backup downgrade back to iOS3?

My update tried to run 2 different times for 2 hours each finally gave up and went to work, I'll try tonight

/sarcasm mode on

Wait, can't we blame AT&T for this too?

/sarcasm mode off

My 3gs, updated to 4.0 in less than 30 minutes including backup.
My daughter's 32gb iPod Touch, updated to 4.0 in less than 30 minutes including backup.
My wife's 3g, restored to 4.0 in a little over 5 hours!

After over 3 hours of barely any movement on the backup progress bar, mine has jumped to almost the end (3G).

Mine has been ongoing for over 5 hours! This is THE STUPIDEST thing I've ever encountered with my iPhone! Really ridiculous!
And so we are clear, I am not talking about how long it took to download IOS4. That was a breeze!
I'm talking about how long it is taking to restore my iPhone from the previous backup!
Apple has made a total mess out of this one for sure!:(

Hey Joe, where you going with that gun in your hand? Folks, If you don't want problems like this, don't ever be the first on the first day to do something first. Why did you think it was going to be safe to do this today. I'll guess you will begin to understand in 20 years after 20 years of frustrations, unless you are ready for the worst, you aren't ready for the first. I don't understand why people have such a problem waiting for a few days or weeks to read the reports and dangers before getting in line and expecting quality service. Don't trust too much. Is it really gonna make any difference if you just wait a week or two?

How to do a speedy upgrade

There are one thing you need to do and one thing you need to know to do a speedy upgrade.

1. Need to do - unsync all music and video and movies. You can unsync and iTunes would still maintain your sync selections so there is no worry that you would need to manually re-select all the media that you want to sync. However, if you manually manage your media.. can't help you there!

2. Need to know - the backup progess bar is retarded, as it shows more the amount of memory backed up instead of the percentage of totally data that need to be backed up. So if you only have 1GB of data in your 16GB phone, you would see the progress bar goes very slow until about 1/16 of the way and then it jumps to the end.

I did the above two and my 16GB 3G was upgraded in less than 15 minutes. Syncing the media back of course would take some time.

Mine went fine... although it took about 8 hours. It is an old, slow computer, so that was one thing. But I wanted to do it now to make sure the phone was fine (I'm getting ready to sell this phone once my new one comes -- soon).

More than 9 hours here.

Um, I started 9 hours and 20 minutes ago. Backup and installation took a looooonnnnng time, and here it is, almost time to leave for work and I guess I'll need to leave my iPod touch here to continue restoring. (grumble grumble)

I started the backup yesterday and had to cancel it after 5 hours due to an important phone call, and it wasn't even half way done! So i left it on overnight since about 10pm to now, 9am. It's only half way done... this is rediculous. (see attachment) I'm starting to regret the fact that I was in such a hurry to upgrade... But I really think this is worth it!

sheesh, i hope you're right. i'm at 13 1/2 hours and it's just now looking like the restore may be done within an hour or two. i REALLY wish i had cleared things off and cleaned things up before diving in. now i'm in ipod withdrawal and have nothing to play with on the long bus ride home. bah!

hope yours wraps up soon!

So midnight last night I started to download mine. It took 90 MINUTES!!!! I fell asleep though, so I woke up and got this message: Download failed due to internet connection timeout. Meh. So 8am I download again. 10 am it's finally done downloading so I connect my phone to my computer and it begins to back up. 12pm- it wasn't even past the B. So I cancelled it and synced it and all that stuff. I just plugged it back in now and I'm already at the A. Oh and I have a 3G.

In a word this update is AGONIZING!!!!

Thank You. That is all.

This upgrade actually is horrible!! It was bad enough to wait all night for this to be released and now I have to wait more for my backup to finish! Its been about 14-15 hours now since i started to back this up... Still half way backed up. Wish I was one of those people who got it just like that, it would make my life so much easier.

Right now, it just seems easier to buy the 4OS..... I think I'm going to unsync everything and try again....

Let me know if that solves the problem, or if you happen to find another solution to this, I can't be patient much longer haha..

okay thanks! i'm going to try unsyncing everything, and see how it goes. Problem is, before this upgrade, my thing wouldn't back up anyway and I would always skip it and click the X, so hopefully i'll still have the important things on my phone after this
