And it starts....

Folks - you seriously might want to hold off for the first patch release. This version has some issues. Yes, things work....eventually. If you like a responsive experience - wait a week or two.

I've used every beta on my iPhone 3Gs and it has worked flawlessly. Smoother than 3.x in fact.

People will be pleasantly surprised with the speed of backups and syncing with iOS 4.

Hi there!
Writing from Spain, update finished 7:09 pm :).

I try the 'GM' release a few days ago and it installed a "Game Center" icon,
but isn't installed with this 'official' update.

Anyone see the same?

Thanks!

Game Center is still a developer preview. It's not going to be released to the public until later in the year.

just realized I had clicked on the direct links 2 times while downloading in Itunes, sorry everyone for hogging the bandwidth ;). But I'm happy to see my wait tim drop by 2/3rds :)

Actually I find that if I backup my iPhone several times a week, it finishes rather quickly. The more I wait and more changes I make on it (new apps, etc) the longer it takes. I got back from a ten day vacation and it took almost an hour.

I've found this to be 100% true on my iPad... my iPhone however is harder to tell if it's the case or not, it always seems to take a while.

If you backup your phone before the update, it should speed it up a little.that's just my little observation

Downloading now. I thankfully have been backing up my iPhone everyday so the backup procedure wouldn't take as long today. The download will be done in 8 minutes :)

Agreed, Rhalliwell. It works fine on my 3Gs (faster than before for sure), and mostman, I can almost guarantee that iOS 4 will not be updated within "a week or two".

Once downloaded directly how does someone get them in place so that iTunes sees it and allows you to install it ?

option click update, then select the download.

It works if you have the GM installed too, the package sizes are different, so I updated mine JIC. It will be iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw... The GM I had installed was iPhone2,1_4-1.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw... just incase you have it as well.

Downloaded and updated iPod in under 10min... I have about 30GB of data on it but had just done a back up prior to the update

Now to do my wife's :D

I did the backup this morning in preparation - now it went 1-2-3

I put the GM on my iPhone 3G. I love the folders! I reduced my application pages from 9 down to 2.

Can't wait for my iPhone 4 on Thursday! ;)

I figured there would be some bugs...I reread my post and it came out more "complaining" then I meant it to. I just wondered if others were having the same experience :) I love being bleeding edge so I'm used to having buggy soft/firmware

I already have the GM, so I have the same version and build that you folks that are downloading have. No need for me to update.

Not exactly the same. This version doesn't have the Game Center preview the RC had. Not sure if there are any other differences.

Apparently I have now fully downloaded the update but the bar has been stuck at 100% for about 20 minutes now with no movement.

Is anybody else suffering from this?
