My battery life seems much improved!

Judging by what people are saying, it seems that the people who did the OTA update are not getting very good battery life.

I downloaded the full 800-900 MB install file and restored through iTunes.

My phone is lasting longer on standby and also on standard reading tasks (mail/news/twitter).

I downloaded Via OTA...not sure why it should matter wether its OTA or via itunes. should be the same.

Very happy here. Usually my 4S has about 40-50% left on it at the end of the day. Yesterday, on it first full day of 5.1, I had 72% remaining.

Could not be more happy!

I also downloaded OTA on phone and have Better battery life.

My observation is that it has been awesome battery life from 100% to about 75%, then it rapidly declines after that.

At the end of the day, with the same use, I've ended up with about the same percentage as 5.0.1

its still 2PM here i wont be sure until tonight but i think that my battery has improved VERY MUCH since i updated... no way it was still at 77% at this time yesterday.

Exactly my experience.

Mine switched itself off at

9hrs 26 minutes Usage
1 day 12hrs Standby

Now on calibrating charge. Will see how it goes after today.

Very happy with the upgrade.

I updated on Wednesday, and yesterday, I noticed the battery drain much faster than on 5.0.1. By the end of the day I was at 30% and usually it's around 50-70%.

I'll watch it again today and see how it goes. I was reading in another thread this morning that some have done clean installs and that seemed to fix the issue. I may end up doing that after today.

On 5.0.1:

Used to have Gmail Push (Microsoft Exchange) and Facebook Push notifications, noted bad drain batteries also when idle (about 4% an hour during the night), so i changed the mail to fetch every 1 hour and disabled Setting Time Zone in location services (that seemed to request my location every single second the phone is turned on).
Got it to drain 1-2% an hour during the night, was not completely happy, but apple says the battery life in idle is 200 hours (about 0,5% an hour), so i thought with 1 push + 1 fetch services it would be ok.

On 5.1:

I re-enabled Gmail Push (Microsoft Exchange) to join Facebook Push notifications, left Setting Time Zone disabled. Went sleeping at midnight, battery at 30%, 7 hours later I woke up to see it was still at 28% (almost unreal!). Will continue with this little test, but i think the big problem for me was Microsoft Exchange. Now push works as it's intended.

Hope this helps someone.

I feel like mine is worse. I'm at 51 minutes usage and 81%. I'm going to watch it the next couple days and maybe do a fresh install on Sunday.

I've yet to let the battery die completely yet to recalibrate it.

Looks better..

Possibly, but more likely it lost your wifi signal and switched over...Mine holds on to my wifi network for about 100 yards up the lane, then kicks into 3g. Same thing if your ISP goes down.

after leaving it overnight

2 hours, 12 minutes usage
12 hours, 9 minutes standby

74% left

i lost about 11% overnight but that was because i had 11 ESPN alerts and 1 e-mail. I say thats pretty good.

Just noticed though that my 3G is on which is odd as i switched it off yesterday. wonder if it came on when the phone died and was charging?

My battery has still not improved after the update.

- Just e-mail, Twitter and Facebook.

Moreover, it still did not fix the problem that my iPhone CANNOT reach 0%. Every single charge it turns off at 8-12%, and I have tried calibrating the phone more times than I can remember. Don't know what to do anymore, getting fed up.

Same boat my friend. Only use bite SMS, which is lagging as of late and 5 icon dock. Would not be losing much to install 5.1. Decisions decisions.

Those are basically the only tweaks I was using too, and you're SO RIGHT about Bite. It's pretty terrible now in my opinion. Also, I ended up taking the plunge and my battery actually is improved!

My iphone shows no change but my wife's iphone which had a great battery life now shows ghost usage time after the upgrade. As a result, the battery life is terrible. I think I need to do clean install for her phone.

I think it's better overall, but hard to say. I slept for about 6 hours last night, and my battery didn't drop a single percent. However, after checking Reeder on my iPhone for about 2 minutes then a round of Draw Something, my battery has already gone down 8 percent. I think it's still calibrating.

Drain damn it!!

Hiya, veteran reader, but first time posting!! :)

I have the opposite issue now  since the update to 5.1 I've been waiting for my iPhone 4s to drain to recalibrate and due to this update significantly improving by battery life........it's not draining on standby at all!! I need my phone tonight, so amusingly, I'm using the compass, YouTube..... anything to get it to drain. It'll be really interesting to see how far I could push it with normal use.

My 4s battery life was fine before updating to 5.0.1 but the 'battery fix' then meant my phone was best termed as ridiculous, as I couldn't get past 3-5pm without it being in the red or dying. I used to often have to top it up at the Apple store whilst in town and would have specialists offering to look at it but I insisted it was software and my 4s is fine. Also, in the end, I had everything switched off and tried everything people suggested on here and was gutted to have if happening to my lovely new phone. Especially after having every version of iPhone before this and being really happy. Looking at this update and the amount of time Apple engineers have spent resolving this, I can see that it's not just an improvement, its seriously like I have a new phone!

As I said to the guys at Apple, the main worry I had with the battery drain issue, was to try not charging it all the time and go effecting the overall life of my battery (Cycle counts and all that). It'll be interesting to see how we all get on going forward.

Oh, and I read someone saying to remove the battery percentage and 'move on with your life'. I think that's really unfair if it's an essential thing in your life. I missed out on some important work on a big film (double work) because I missed a text due to my phone dying. That and how much this phone cost me, I think it only right we're able to all discuss it with each other. I've just joined MacRumours to say this and really appreciate people that share their experiences and screenshots. At least it meant I wasn't alone!

I've just emailed myself this screenshot in the hope it will kill my battery!? It's still on 1% and I have everything running, I'm chatting to SIRI, asking it to 'drain the battery for me'! Throughout the time since taking it off charge, I've made and received long phone calls, listened to Stitcher for few hours, TuneIn radio a little, lots of reading of Flip, WhatsApp, Maps etc etc anyway, I've used it a lot! I updated over iTunes rather than a delta update, figured I had it so bad, I would benefit from a fresh install and boy was I right!

EDIT! I just realised I sound really cocky! haha! I posted to see if I can help find out what causes such different experiences, ie if we can find out whether there is one definitive way to update or recalibrate etc etc.......you know what I mean, but wanted to say that when I read happy comments from people during 5.0.1 I'd think, ah shut up......grrr!
