iOS 5.1 Battery Drain

Too bad there is no back port to 5.0.1
Using Apple's updates is such a risky proposition :eek::eek:

Since the problems I reported yesterday; and a subsequent message this morning, I have done a full restore to new phone and re-installed everything. After the full restore I did a hard restart. It has now been a little over 2 hours and I am still sitting/idling at 100%. Yesterday a lesser time frame showed a drop of 11%+.

This isn't the most fun solution but appears to be one for me. I have limited notifications, WiFi off unless needed, and many of the recommended changes to extend battery life. I will continue to post feedback throughout the day, but am now hopeful that I will be limited to one charge per day versus the multiples I have performed over the past few months.

*fingers crossed*

I have always recommended that you do a full restore as new(not from backup at all) via iTunes when there is a new version available. I've been issue free using this method.

That's exactly my method, always did that when a new update is available.

I had terrible battery life before but yesterday I installed 5.1 and it lasted for 21 hours. I had to run a video at 20% just to drain it for calibration.

I use my phone a lot and I feel like the 4S will drain fast during use because of the processor but if I can make it through a day with light/moderate use I will be very happy!

If your battery is draining without use I suggest you return the phone to Apple and try another one!

id like to restore my iphone as new too but how do people with lots of apps , app data contacts deal with this? since its better not to use any kind of backup/restore?

It appears that my battery life has gotten slightly better. With minimal usage I'm around 83% battery left, took the phone off the charger roughly 7 hours ago, I should be in the mid to low 60's.

If it lasts me 2 days on a single charge, then I can say it improved, because on 5.0.1 it couldn't.

I wish people would just turn off the % indicator and go on with their lives. There's much more out there than obsessing over something like this.

I'd rather obsess over it than get the surprise 20% indication when I have no way to charge for hours.

There are times when I can easily go the day without it running out, and there are days where it dies far earlier than expected.

If I knew it'd last morning to night without issues, there wouldn't be any obsessing.

You don't need the % to tell you you're close to 20%. You should be able to eyeball it just by looking at how much of the bar you have left.

I'm debating on whether I want to update to 5.1 and no longer be jailbroken for the improved battery life y'all are discussing... Hmmm choices lol

I'm interested to know if it still does that annoying thing where it shows the battery draining while plugged in ?

Let my phone die down charged it up to 100% and here are my stats so far

52 minutes usage
1 hour, 30 minutes standby

94% left

Very impressed so far.

Then why have this device if you're going to always be concerned with the battery and you can't use it for it's intended purpose?

I don't get why people turn everything off to save battery to get the most "run time". It's not a contest. User your device as intended and move on with life. I had sales people tell me I should turn off wifi and 3g before. I was like are you fraking kidding me? It's a 3G PHONE!!! Turn of a feature that you're selling me? HUH? Yeah, no.

You might as well turn off the phone and go back to a flip phone - like the motorola razr.

These devices USE POWER. Unless the device is drastically draining battery, I would say it's normal use. Even cellular data will drain the battery if it's searching or holding a signal.

Just amazed at some of the comments here. All concerned about how much juice they aren't getting. With as much as you are posting, might as well plug it in while your sitting at your desk/home/office/couch. Lol.

First off I am new here and like the info I have found so far.

I have not noticed much diff. with my battery life yet but my usage changes day to day. What I did notice is that my ringer volume seems to be much less since I updated this morning. I tried a hard restart and it didnt change anything. Does anybody have a clue as to what would cause this?

Hi, just done the same (well iPhone is still charging but nearly at 100%!)

Is yours the 4S?

Do you have location services on? Bluetooth on? What push notifications do you have on?

Wi-Fi or 3G on?

What did the 52 mins of usage consist of?

Thanks!

My phone is currently at 28%, I have five hours of usage and eight hours of standby. So far I don't think that's bad at all. I could probably get another hour and a half out of the phone before it goes dead, but, I'm going to charge it now!

"Issue free" but you've lobotomised your iPhone and started fresh every time a new point release comes out - doesn't sound too perfect to me.

One of the great strengths of the iPhone, iTunes and now iCloud combination is that you shouldn't have to worry about wiping and losing data, it all comes with you and "just works". That's why on my current 4S I can still look through text messages I received in October 2008 on my first iPhone (the 3G). If losing all that was ever genuinely the supposed solution to an iPhone fault then Apple would have failed in my view.

As it is, my 4S battery has always been ok and just got a little better with 5.1 - three and a half years of accumulated cruft (much of it from two other phones) not withstanding.

Yeah 4S

Have location services on
Bluetooth off
3G off when at home now

Currently have push email on but will switch it off when I go bed.

I have a fair few notifications on

ESPN score center
Team stream
Weather
Messages
Calendar
Reminders

I get NBA scores and fleets through a fair bit... So notifcations wise I have a fair few.

Backup on too not that it effects battery life.

Interesting, hopefully I'll get that on mine.

Same boat my friend. Only use bite SMS, which is lagging as of late and 5 icon dock. Would not be losing much to install 5.1. Decisions decisions.

Im getting about double, if not more.

On 5.0.1 I got roughly 5 hours of usage, and about 12 hours of standby. Moderate usage, mostly texting and words with friends.

Today, I have been on it for 3+ hours with 8 hours of standby and I'm still at 70%. Extremely happy. This is better than my iPhone 4 on iOS 4.xx!

I'm the odd person out i guess.. I got longer battery life on 5.0.1 than 5.1, lol! I'm gonna give this a few days first though.

This is what I've got. I couldn't get a pic before it died so this is immediately after it turned on after being on the charger. Overall pleased with the update.

I have 57% left with 16 hours of use. Not plugged in at all since last charge and I've been using it for messaging mostly and games. I get way better battery on 5.1 than 5.0.1. Very pleased.

How is your iPhone 4s battery on 5.1?

Do you think your battery life improve, remain same or worsen?

I am yet to test it.
