Why would you wait for any update?

Waiting for updates is one of the fun traditions of the Android platform! It’s their equivalent of us waiting for a keynote stream or a new product shipment.

And every now and then, some people have problems with an update (because public release is always a bigger test than any pre-release tests could possibly be). Who wants to be the guinea pig? I say wait 1-2 weeks on any update from any company. (But we still won’t have it as good as Android, where most products are 100% protected from new bugs because they quickly stop getting updates :p )

Wait a second. Did the menus always slide in and out in the settings app?

Every time there is an update I think something that I've seen/been using forever is a new feature and I get excited and confused. Is this one of those times?
Yeah it should have always had the slide animation.

Hmm
No OTA for me?? iPhone 4 iOS 5.1 (9B5141a)
Try Reset / Erase All Setting!!! Still No OTA???
You will need to do a restore, the version number is the same (even though the build is different) so it isn't going to prompt you.

You can actually do a "Shift - Update" instead of "Shift - Restore" with the ipsw file from the link provided earlier and it will do an update from the beta. I did that with the 5.0.1 beta and am doing it from the 5.1 beta 3 as I'm typing this.

206MB or 189MB???

How come the size of the firmware shows 206MB in your article, meanwhile some other site says it's 189MB? Which one is correct?

4g now shown after updating

MY iPhone4s now shows 4G as the signal instead of 3G. I turned off wifi and I get about 3 bars inside my house compared to maybe 3-4 bars under 3G. Time will tell if my reception is really better with ATT.

Hmm did anyone notice and issued with this update when ur screen is locked an u double click u can't lunch the camera app:(??

The 4.x to 5.x upgrade went horrible, took ages, had issues, etc.
This time around, from 5.0 to 5.1 it went very smooth.

On the device itself you just click on 'upgrade' under preferences > general > software update > when it shows as available. And it downloads it, prepares for an update and reboots the device. No need for all sorts of weird things and no 'doubt if this goes well' popup boxes with questions.

It went smooth, and fast, .. gestures seems to be a lot faster, the camera app update is worth it, and boy is it fast now.

Let's hope any battery draining bug has been addressed indeed, and all is sorted.

5.1 feels snappy on iPad2 and iPhone4 for me.

I was kinda hoping it would have a few more new things, especially since their beta took a while to go golden, but hey ho. We get what we get.

Time to get iPhoto installed, and unfortn. there's still no clock app like on the iPhone, along a few other things (boooo).

So I had the phantom usage thing. I had my iPhone charged to 100%. Installed 5.1 OTA. Left my phone for 15 mins and usage dropped to 2mins (usually I had 8 mins without touching my phone).
So far so good...

Is it possible that Apple could have SECRETLY hidden a 4G antenna on the 4s until they decided to activate it, (i.e. Today)? I would have thought somebody would have detected that before now. Anybody?

Highly doubtful.HSPA+ is advertised as 4G thats all.I thought it wouldve said H+ if anything

Meh. I haven't had any issues with 5.0, and have not updated from there. As many have indicated here, these updates are pretty underwhelming. With the exception of highlighting face and camera button constantly available on lock screen (which really isn't a big a deal whether they included it or not), the rest have no baring for me whatsoever. So like every other update, I'll be waiting to see what people are saying after they've done it. Updates to strange things to people's otherwise working phones. So if people start chiming in that their phones got messed up after the update, I won't be updating to this one either. They could have at least made it more enticing by including Location feature for Canadian SIRI users. Oh Apple, how I miss your younger days.
