unnecessary steps. you having problems with 01.59.00 was related to ultrasn0w not firmware. but if it works for you, then good deal.

I'm gonna try keeping 01.59.00 (without installing ultrasn0w) on iOS5 at first and see how it goes. If I have problems, I'll go to latest iOS4 BB or stock iOS5

I should do this on the weekend and I'll update with any problems

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Looking forward to your findings! Keep us informed.

The new ultrasn0w was released today that supports iPhone 4 iOS5 1.59.00. You need to update to iOS5 using redsnow for mac to keep 1.59.00 baseband. But it is still tethered.

The weirdness happens with 4.3.x. Anything up to/including 4.2.1 is fine, which is why my ios hasn't moved.
Whaaaaaat? Is this true?!

I have no problems on 4.1 with 01.59.00

01.59.00 was the official BB of 4.0-4.0.2

So I'm currently on an "unofficial" BB with no problems.

I really hope I don't have problems on 5.0. I don't need the unlock and Rogers will unlock my phone when I upgrade or my contract is over but I still like to have the possibility.

Eastercat,

That's exactly the same issue that I had. Any iOS up to 4.2.1 worked fine for me on BB 1.59.00 but if I was to upgrade to 4.3.x and keep the BB, my signal wouldn't work, MMS wouldn't work and randomly 3G wouldnt work. Some people say that UltraSn0w is the cause of the problem but I found it to be the fix for the signal issue (only displaying 1 bar) but wouldn't affect MMS or 3g.

That's why I'm on official carrier and I just upgraded my BB to 04.10.01 (from Stock 4.3.3)

You will not be able to unlock with Ultrasn0w then. This is per their blog post "The supported basebands for the iPhone 3G and 3GS are 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00. The baseband supported for the iPhone4 is 01.59.0" Only 1.59.0 is supported on the iPhone 4 and iOS5.

Hi I have the same question and see there's this thread already open. Based on the response, can I conclude that I can upgrade my 4.3.3 Untethered 1.59 Sim-Unlocked iPhone 4 to iOS 5 by RedSn0w to preserve 1.59 and Sim-Unlocked but the jailbreak will be tethered?

Is there anyway to stay untethered. Thanks for any help and have a great day. :)

No, iPhone4 iOS5 is only tethered right now.

backing up now

then will create my custom FW with redsn0w
then restore and (official) activate
then test signal bars, 3G, MMS and voicemail
then tethered jailbreak
then test again

should post my results here by tonight

Hi all, I've updated to ios 5 with preserved bb 01.59.00 unlocked with updated ultrasn0w. Made the custom firmware with redsn0w and jailbroke it too! Im using a different carrier and I pick up signal on edge and 3g everythings great on that end. Though when I jailbroke it had its original carriers sim in "vodafone" for activation thru itunes purposes, it automatically updated the carrier settings for vodafone, also note in settings>general>network it doesn't give the option to enter data settings. Since then i've reset network settings and manually tried to update the ipcc file thru itunes with correct apn settings for my new carrier and still i cant get the phone to receive data on edge or 3g....

Anyone have any ideas as to what might be a solution? Just to recap good signal strength on bb 01.59.00 ios5 but can't receive data...

ALRIGHTY THEN

Updated to iOS 5 preserving 01.59.00

Carrier signal bars DO NOT work. I'm stuck on 1 bar no matter what
3G data DOES work
Personal Hotspot is NOT in settings. Even though my carrier supports it.
MMS DOES work

So the only problem is signal bars and personal hotspot. I don't really care too much about the signal bars, but I want the personal hotpot.

Since I don't need the unlock, I'm restoring to stock iOS5. I hope I don't regret it.

Info:

iPhone 4 32GB
Restored from 4.1 and 01.59.00
Restored to 5.0 preserving 01.59.00
Carrier: Rogers
Carrier Version: Rogers 11.0

Note: iTunes did NOT whine after the restore and my phone did NOT stay in recovery. Though my baseband was indeed preserved at 01.59.00

Note2: I rebooted and still no personal hotspot

Restoring to stock iOS5 now.

Restored to stock iOS 5. Baseband is now 04.11.08. Signal bars work but still no Personal Hotspot? Dammit lol

I've never used Personal Hotspot before (4.1 didn't have it, I used MyWi), I hope there's no setup that I missed.

Meh I'm on stock now. Hopefully Personal Hotspot will show up.

Jailbreaking now.

Edit: Ah, you have to enable it in Network. Bummer. In any case, I have working signal bars now at least.

Ok im new to his whole unlock/jailbreak thing.

I however did manage to jailbreak my iphone 4 (at&t but no longer activated) I am running IOS 5 with a BB 04.11.08

i want to unlock my iphone 4 so I may use it with tmobile

I found this article that pretty much says you can downgrade to 4.3.5 it will also downgrade your bb to 04.10.01

here is the article:
http://www.iphonehail.com/downgrade-04-11-08-baseband-in-ios-5-gm-on-iphone-4-for-unlock-2093.html

Im wondering if this indeed works or should i not waste my time trying??
Is there any ways I can get IOS 5 running & unlocked now or am I looking at a wait?

Thanx for the help!

You cannot unlock as it is not possible to downgrade BB. Please don't hijack other's threads.

Hey man ... im in the same case (iOS 5 with 01.59.00) but I used Ultrasn0w 1.2.4 to unlock. But whenever I start my iphone it goes to safe mode and it asks to restart and when I do, the safe mode comes back on. Quite frustrating. Anyone know how to fix this?

sorry I thought I was asking a question related to the original topic and what others were posting/asking here. I am new here.

Did you install anything else? I installed Infinifolders but this caused a safe mode loop cause its not compatible with iOS5. I uninstalled it in safe mode and I'm good.

Damn, I was going to upgrade to iOS 5 today and keep 1.59 but im scared something is not going to work. I might wait a week or two.

Ya I probably should have waited. Other than the signal bars, I had no problems. Maybe someone can fix that. Or maybe its carrier specific?

iOS5 defs is a bigger update than any other previous iOS. Even coming from 4.x, the changes are slightly overwhelming. A very un-Apple-like level of customizability. Tim Cook's work?

Dev-Team's ultrasn0w includes that fix but, since it's packaged with the unlock, you will sacrifice MMS/VVM, unless you keep pulling out and putting back in the sim card every so often.

I dont think I going to preserve my baseband anymore. The only reason I kept 1.59 is to have a higher resell value on ebay. Or I might just keep 4.3.3 and wait until 4S can be jailbroken then upgrade.

That's the same reason I've been keeping the original baseband. I haven't had any issues running 01.59.00 on iOS 5 (AT&T) except for the 1 signal bar issue. It's rather annoying... but I'll deal with it for now.
