now I'm on iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iOS 5 semi-tetherd and is been great. I'm upgrading on the 25 of nov to the 4S and selling my i4 on eBay. the resell price of an unlocked i4 is around $350 to $450 depending on the condition of the device. so i think is worth the baseband preserve. I'm semi-tethered with only MY3G, SBSettings (be cautious when using SBSettings some features made my i4 overheat and drain the battery. i think it was the delete carrier in system options but I'm not 100% sure), and TetherMe works perfect and had no problems.

Weeks later...

I'm now running into a few issues with my iPhone 4. I'm on baseband 01.59.00 with iOS 5. Now, iMessages will not send or receive while on 3G. They only work when connected to WiFi. My push notifications also do not seem to work when on 3G. Only WiFi. My iPhone is NOT jailbroken.

Does this sound like an issues with 01.59.00? I've only been staying on that to keep the resale value up; I'm on AT&T. If so, I may just say "screw it" & upgrade the baseband to fix these issues. The problems aren't worth the extra money I may make by eventually selling it unlocked.

Did you try restoring and setting up as new?
It might not be the baseband that's causing that.
I'd try that before I throw away the unlock first.

Seconded. And before that I'd try a reset network settings if you haven't done that already.

AT&T doesn't unlock phones at contract end I presume?

Canada FTW

Sometimes it is just a simple eject and reinsert sim to solve the 3G problem,
My 5.0 with 1.59 works without a hitch, also on all previous firmwares from 4.01 onward.

If you were to restore as new, can you then go back and restore one of your "saved" iPhones from iTunes to keep all of your data, or are you starting from scratch?

Thanks.

Yes, after you setup as new you can later go and restore from backup on itunes at any time.

Nope, never.

Is there a way to backup my WiFi passwords before a network reset? I've reset it before and it wasn't very fun trying to remember all of my WiFi passwords again.

I'm sure it can be done, but not in any way that I know. Maybe search around a little more...? I know it can be done with a little hacking.

What you can do is backup then restore network. If it fixes the problem, you will have fixed your problem for the small cost of losing your passwords. If it doesn't work, then you can restore from backup or continue to fully restore FW...

Good point. I may do that.

The only problem with restoring is that I cannot restore to iOS 5.0 anymore; I'd have to restore to 5.0.1. I'd rather stay on 5.0 since it sounds like an untethered jailbreak may be coming to that sooner than 5.0.1.

An untether exploit for 5.0 has not been found by "our side" yet. If we haven't found it, then likely Apple hasn't found it, and hasn't patched it in 5.0.1.

If that's the case, then from my understanding, any exploit that will untether 5.0 should also untether 5.0.1

In any case, I like sticking to "if it ain't so broke that you can't use it, then don't fix it" ;)

I hate that anxious/scared/nervous feeling I get when I restore and jailbreak my phone lol and I've done it to mine and others countless times since 2007 hehe

I don't know what is mentioned, but the problem you will likely run into is that MMS and Voicemail may stop working. I think this happens with any 4.3.3+ build on 1.59.0 bb once you unlock. If you don't unlock, mms and vm work fine, but your signal bar always shows 1 bar.

I'm on 5.0.1 with 1.59.0, not unlocked and I only have one bar, regardless of reception. Hope that helps.

Edit:

Eastercat,

That's exactly the same issue that I had. Any iOS up to 4.2.1 worked fine for me on BB 1.59.00 but if I was to upgrade to 4.3.x and keep the BB, my signal wouldn't work, MMS wouldn't work and randomly 3G wouldnt work. Some people say that UltraSn0w is the cause of the problem but I found it to be the fix for the signal issue (only displaying 1 bar) but wouldn't affect MMS or 3g.

That's why I'm on official carrier and I just upgraded my BB to 04.10.01 (from Stock 4.3.3)

I'm running 5.0 with 1.59.00 baseband, and I got frustrated with the 1-bar issue, so I went ahead and installed ultrasn0w a few weeks ago. Happy to say that up to this point, no issues with visual voice mail or MMS, while on my usual AT&T account.

Thanks, so yours not unlocked?

You are on ultrasnow too?
Would it better to try 5.0 instead?
Or whats your best suggestion for me to get as close as poss to ios5 and unlocked? Or what unlocking system?
Im now on 4.01 and bb 1.59

Im the same.
On 4.3.3 with 01.59.00 BB and waiting for pwnage tool or till there's an untethered JB for 5.0 to upgrade and maintain the unlockable baseband so I can sell it for a little more right after I get the 4S.

I was under the impression that RedSn0w allows for a tethered JB on IOS5 w/out updating BB. I think there are tutorials on iClarified.com...

Without uktrasn0w, you will have the one bar issue. If he installed ultrasn0w, which he says he did, then he is unlocked.

You can't "try 5.0" because apple is no longer signing it. Your only option is 4.x using SHSH or 5.0.1. As far as I'm aware, there is no significant difference between 5.0 and 5.0.1.

Also, you can't use redsn0w for 5.0.1. You have to create a build using sn0wbreeze in windows so that your baseband is not updated.

Edit: corrected sn0wbreeze / ultrasn0w mixup

Yes, now there is an updated redsnow that does that.
Back on the beginning of October when I posted that there wasnt anything available. :)
