It's a good step in the right direction, I am happy with the improvements but I was hoping for more voice integration and a better maps option.

Ditto. Need voice integration. Android does a great job with both. Good progress but these are must haves...

I don't know about you, but after today's announcements, I am really excited about iOS 5. It brings everything I wanted too and more. I love the new notifications, the Mail.app, the WiFi sync, the new lock screen, everything!
The Cloud integration is also great and makes the iPad and the iPhone even better. Especially the documents sync.

+1. It's absolutely the best iOS upgrade, and it seems as though iOS 5 has made the iPhone perfect for me. Only thing i'd like to see is a change in springboard and more voice integration, hopefully we'll see that in iOS 6 but i am absolutely happy.

The lock screen = jailbreak feature
iMessenger = WhatsApp (but actually less feature rich)
iCloud = Apple's walled garden of DropBox
Reminders = Honey Do + location services
Read It Later = Instapaper
Volume Button as camera button = Camera+ before they were booted
So your argument is that Apple shouldn't bother to implement (and improve) anything that has already been done by Jailbreak or other companies?

Although that may free Apple to implement other new things, what you are complaining amounts to whining rather than constructive criticisms.

iMessage is a game changer because it will be installed on every iOS 5 devices. WhatsApp (which costs $0.99) and other messaging apps are limited not due to features but because of smaller user base. Ability to exchange text and data with every iOS 5 users without paying ridiculous SMS and MMS is bad?

As for iCloud, while I love Dropbox, iCloud is in entirely different category because it is used to automatically backup and sync contents. Approaching iCloud as another Dropbox is like saying computers are the same as hard disk.

As for other things that you are complaining about, such as Reading List, I don't necessarily see these new features as predatory in that it will help good developers get more exposure (they can use "we are similar to iOS 5's this-and-that feature but better" argument) as long as they price their apps fairly and keep them superior. You know, like countless weather and notes apps.

yes, I am excited for it too....some of these features are long overdue.

Anyone want to take a stab at what "alternate routes in maps" means? does it mean if you're following a route, and don't take the proper turn it'll automatically redirect you? that's the best guess I can make....

I am actually really glad they revamped the notification system. That was one of my biggest gripes with ios. I hated being interrupted every time i got a text message etc.

I was a little disappointed no full screen mode option was included in safari but maybe that was something they did not mention in the keynote.

I'm guessing they'll have a event in the Fall to introduce the iPhone 5, and since the iP5 is rumoured to be a simple spec update, they'll add a few more features to iOS 5, like navigation. What 'alternate routes in maps' could be part of the navigation that wasn't ready to preview today. If not, then they've got iOS 5.1 or even iOS 6, and the position to 'revolutionise maps' also hints at this.

If they're going to add to the already massive list of features in iOS5, they'll probably add widgets, navigation (iP5 only - like LED notification) and, maybe, a redesign of the home screen for iPad; alongside the iPhone 5, in the fall; if not, then it's iOS 5.1 or iOS 6

Yeah they have revealed a lot of cool stuff and the foundation of IOS is going to change because of it.

A lot to be excited about for sure. I don't think a lot of people see what this is going to mean for app developers either. This opens up a lot of new doors for them as well.

By the way I am going to automatically put anyone on ignore who compares imessenger to whatsapp.

If you can't figure out why those two things are not even close to being the same and why iMesenger won't destroy it the day it is live, then there is little hope for you.

Really? Looks like I'm going on ignore then, cos I don't see any advantage to iMessenger. I only have about 3 friends with iPhones, the rest have Blackberry or Android. Whatsapp offers a huge advantage over iMessenger in this respect. I you don't see my point here then there's little hope for you.

Edit: Can anyone point out a way that iMessenger is better than Whatsapp? I'm genuinely curious as to how it is any better?

a 4 year old UI couldn't cut it anymore. Just my 2cents, please don't hate me :apple: user here

I laughed. This is basically just a an iPhone 4.x OS with a few jailbroken apps thrown in that blatantly copy Android. The cloud will be a joke for most people aside from backup up their contacts and getting push email / calendar.

That left me incredibly unimpressed. That was NOT worthy of a 5 year anniversary.

LION On the other hand.. very impressive.

They finally realized that android is superior and started to copy some of its aspects. A good move.

Is there truly not a single GPS Turn-by-turn voice navigation app for the iPhone 4?

Of course there are! Check out Navigon and/or TomTom - both are excellent and are very similar in what they offer. It all boils down to what you're really looking for in a nav app. I personally have both but find myself using Navigon more (don't even have TomTom installed right now but that's a space issue more than anything else).

too bad you didn't show some other screens from windows 7 phone. Like how about the application screen that is a single column of icons. If you load a lot of apps, you will be scrolling forever.

Maybe you could have shown the wifi connection screen. Unfortunately if you work in a corporate environment, you can't attach to network that doesn't have their SSID broadcast.

Or maybe you can have shown the weak music app, the incredibly basic messaging app, the picture app that doesn't save any of your settings.

I carried a Windows 7 phone as my only device for three weeks. By the end of the third week I wanted to through it against a wall.

for people that want better voice and a google maps upgrade, I bet you see both when iOS5 is finally released. Got to save something new to show at the release event (which will coincide with the iPhone 5 fall reveal).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/534.32 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8F190 Safari/6533.18.5)

Alternate routes is when you do directions it gives you different choices. Like you can choose to take the interstate or you can choose a local highway. It's pretty nice. Would have been helpful on a recent trip where I had to keep forcing it not to send me on the interstate through a major city. :)

- That is fixed in jumplist

Now you can via app or via Mango update

1)Zune looks like alot sexier than iOS player in portrait mode, but landscape (switches to cover flow) they are just about the same.

2) Messaging app, have you send how windows phone 7, integrated live messenger, msn, and sms, in one app, its pure awesomeness, you can message a person regardless of the protocol, depending upon their availability, but still gives you an option what to use if you want to

3) Picture app now save your settings in Mango not a deal breaker actually, it just defaults to optimal settings before.

you meant throw or through? or is that the autocorrect feature of your iOS device? :D just kidding

Just so you know, I was just telling that I think jafingi just loves the UI of wp7 over IOS. But since you asked, I just answered ;)

I've made several posts about this recently. They basically boil down to this:

The Mac UI has slowely evolved for the last 27 years without a major revamp. Many changes, yes, but the same basic paradigm after all this time. (In fact, I'd say that Lion is the biggest change it's gotten yet...perhaps the first real overhaul in the Mac's history!)

So if it took the Mac 27 years to get a major overhaul I think that it's not likely to happen in the iPhone's 5th year.

Really? Cause I'd argue that the jump from 9 to X was a definite real overhaul, way more than Lion from Snow Leopard. I could see your arguement if you were talking OSX itself, but you are claiming all of Mac's history. Either you forgot Mac OS 9 and before or... well I just don't know cause honestly, Snow Leopard to Lion most definitely was not as big a revamp as OS 9 to OS X.

I mean, if nothing else, they changed the basis for hte operating system entirely (they went from the original basis for Mac OS to using Unix). And they pretty much scrapped having the OS be at all compatible with software from the previous OS (I'm betting I can still use a lot of software from Snow Leopard on Lion). If you went to OS X, you were going to a pretty much completely new OS (and would have to find new programs to work on it). They did allow you to duel boot the Mac into the previous OS so you could run your old programs on the old OS.

Plus the UI did change (it got simpler looking at first cause they got rid of a lot of add on stuff they had added through the years. Like I missed being able to take a folder and push it to the bottom and make a tab for it at the bottom. They've implemented stuff that replaced that feature in later OS X versions but some of the stuff they got rid of they didn't have a good answer for in the very original OSX).

Honestly, I'm a little more leery of Lion mostly I'm afraid they might have gotten rid of some stuff I liked in lieu of their new features. Especially with how they treat finder. The one way I like to browse finder I know is not their favorite as they never advertise it and I know why, cause it's a copy of Windows File Explorer. Not a huge fan of Windows but I have to say, I much prefer exploring folders by opening the contents in a list to the side of the folder and being able to explore folder trees that way. That's one feature I really think Windows got right and it shows as Mac copied it though I notice they stay very silent about it and they set OS X to default to using other methods of file browsing instead.

To be fair, I'm a pretty conservative Mac OS user (as in I tend to get annoyed or leery when they do major changes... I'm probably the kind of user why they don't in general do major changes but just evolve the OS instead.. you know evolution over revolution). I was very upset when they changed from 9-10 (around then is when I went to Windows for a while). It wasn't until Tiger that I really gave OSX a real chance (which I had to begrudgingly admit I liked. Though going back and using the original OS X... yeah, I still think they left a lot out).

iOS 5 though? I can't wait for.

Ha....jumplists!!!......yep this makes for some great UI.

not that jumplist, something like this:

wp7appjumplist-slide.jpg

they added search as well, so it filters as you type :)

anyway, if you hate the UI, than that's you, I'm just saying that jafingi thinks its awesome, and I tend to agree with him. peace :) So I hope you don't hate us, we spent a lot money buying apple products as well. Its not like we hate apple right?

Sorry for the OT, this is the last post I'll make for windows phone 7 in this thread.

That is really clunky. If you have a lot of apps having the only options being scroll through them or try to type the name (what if you don't remember the name of the app exactly) is a really annoying way to try to search for them.

Can you at least have folders so you can organize them so you don't have to scroll as much?

Personally, I prefer the OS that lets me make the most of my screen rather than wasting a lot of space (one of my issues with w7... they seem to waste a lot of space for "style" <- of which I don't even like anyways).

And you can search on iOS too if you want to do it that way.

Speaking of a good Navigation app...

Can anyone recommend one that's relatively affordable from the App store?

MotionX GPS Drive -- .99. has traffic, spoken street names (for 30 days), 3D maps, offline map access, etc... only thing its missing is lane-assist imagery.
