Played with my co-workers Android phone, and I love the slide down notifications bar. Other than that iOS is pretty perfect. All those widgets that other phones have seem like a waste of space... I barely use the dashboard on my Mac, so why would I use widgets on my phone.

Just give me a better home screen so I don't have to open apps to get to the essentials. I'm easy to please.

Live icons maybe for weather and other functions? I can't really think of anything else that I would really want. I'm perfectly fine with the way iOS currently is and anything they add is just a bonus to me.

Why iOS 5 will suck...
  • Apple has been working too hard on the .x updates! They never have given us so much, or released them so late in the cycle!
  • Apple has been working too hard on Lion! They diverted attention away from iOS
  • Apple is too subborn to change with the times. the OS will just patch crap on top instead of redesigning much needed features

Those are horrible reasons for it to suck. I don't think iOS 5 will suck, it just might not be up to expectations.
I just want a notification system to rival Android.

I could see dashboard coming to the iPad considering the fact that the Mac widgets are essentially full fledged apps on the iPhone and are non-existant on the iPad.

You can't really say that Apple is working too hard on the 4.x updates. I'm sure they have a list of possible fixes/improvements all lined out and are just incrementally releasing them 1-2 at a time and saving the big ones for iOS 5. iOS isn't some high school science project... Millions of dollars of R&D are put into it and you can expect some key features to be released.

To me, the multi-finger gestures to swipe between opened apps is key as this will bring multi-tasking closer to webOS. Bring on improved notifications and some cool features with NFC and you'll have a pretty good update.

The main thing I really want changed is the notification system.
I think live updated app icons for weather would be neat also.

Or do you think it'll flop?

How could it possibly flop? It's free!

It's not like when Vista came out and it sucked so people stayed with XP. It's going to have some new features, but it's not going to have everything you desire (and even if it did you'd think of something new tomorrow).

i'd like it to feel speedier, have a better notification system and perhaps live icons for the weather and time apps.

A better notification system is really needed. Palm/HP's WebOS event showed a system which could work well with iOS.

And I would really like the option to build shortcuts to certain settings. Having to dig into the settings menu to turn on tethering is kinda a pain.

For the most part though iOS is very good.

It'll be interesting to see what Apple does to evolve the OS.

A few days ago I would have said better notifications but with the rumor that they are just now talking with the Boxcar app people, I think it may slip to iOS 6. So, my expectations for 5:

1) shortcuts to wifi, BT, etc (i.e. tap the symbol in the status bar)
2) new multi-tasking interface ( at least a different way to bring up the tray)
3) NFC stuff....I don't know anything about that though.
4) Some sort of "widget" system, but I doubt it'd be widgets running on every home page, sucking battery like android. Probably another screen to the left of spotlight which will give you widgets but they won't be running unless you are looking at them.

I know that this has been done to death but it is always fun. There is really only one feature absent from iOS that has always really bugged me, and it's a small feature that phones have had for 10 years.

I want to customize my notifications, and make separate notification profiles. I want the phone to vibrate when I get a text or email, ring/vibrate when a I get a call, and I always want the audible keyboard.

Why this wasn't in the first iteration of iOS is beyond me.

I would seriously consider switching to WP7 if iOS doesn't include notification profiles.

For some reason I'm really worried about how iOS 5 is going to turn out. I've already dedicated myself to iOS (lots money invested in apps) so there's basically no turning back barring some extreme circumstances. I don't know why I have such a bad feeling about iOS 5... and I hope I'm wrong. I have always been very happy with the upgrades in the past.

I think my general dissatisfaction lies with the iPad. Personally, I'm satisfied with iOS 4 for the iPhone, because it's just a phone. The multitasking works well enough, even the notifications aren't deal breakers. It could certainly be improved upon, but I'm happy with how things are, and I know Apple will constantly be upgrading things over time.

But my expectations for the iPad are much higher and I don't think apple is prepared to deliver. I really would like a more computer like experience on the iPad. And the thing is, I know if apple wanted to they could really deliver. Mission Control view, a dashboard of customizable widgets, superior notifications, usefull info on the lockscreen, and a handful of 4/5 finger gestures.

I highly doubt the iPad will have more computer like features, there's a Mac for that. Apple wants people to buy an iPad and a Mac so Apple will stick to it until the Macbook and iPad combine to become the new tablet.

Why not? I'm not saying put Mac OS X on the thing, but the OS seems very strangled to me, when compared to webOS. Have you seen the webOS event where they demo the touchpad? It's definitely worth a watch. It offers a much richer experience.

It has "cards" very similar to how a desktop has several windows open, and even better in some ways. You can stack cards together, and arrange them however you like, and when you are done just flick them away to close. Very fluid. Then the notifications pop up in the top right corner very unobtrusively and fade away. You can access all your notifications by tapping an area, and then swipe between multiple notifications within an app, then click on whatever notification you want to act upon. Those are just a couple of the things that impress me about webOS. There are many other things I won't discuss much like their "just type" or online web gallery access within the default photos app, or "touch to share" and more. HP is even planning on putting WebOS on desktops. That's how confident they are with the webOS experience.

I don't see how it would be too difficult for apple to create their own card-like view of running apps and present it in their great expose format, or even better, mission control. That ONE minor thing allow exponentially creates a more computer like experience.

Why are people so bent on taking 8MP pictures from their phone. This will almost certainly result in poorer picture quality. How often have you posted full-sized pictures online, or made large prints?

Did you even read the link that I posted about the 8MP camera? If you did you would have saw that Sony going to be making the sensor for the 8MP camera

Yes, I read the link you provided. It was posted about the iPhone 5 when the 3GS was still the current iPhone.

Focal length.

http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/Optical/Focal_Length_01.htm

In order to have the lens refract light to a larger sensor you need to add thickness to get adequate focal length. Yeah, right, this is Apple. You can't just "stick in a bigger sensor". Or, you could use the same sized sensor but it will probably degrade picture quality.

Apple may use an 8MP sensor in the current size to placate the ignorant masses, but don't expect the picture quality to actually improve. Expect it to get worse. Still, they might just give you your 8MP.

The things tha I really want are 64 GB, 4"+ screen size, and true 4G. I bet I'll get NONE of these. :(

Dual core cpus use less power than single core cpus, not more.

Every bolded thing in the link I posted is reasonable and has a real chance of happening in the next iOS and iPhone.

You are making things up, and so is my link, and there isn't a single bolded thing on either list that is unreasonable. It's just that the list in my link is a lot more comprehensive than the list in this OP.

If anything, your prediction that Google Maps will be replaced by Apple's own mapping program is a lot less likely than anything bolded in this link...

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1021233/

There's a lot more to making a viable competitor to Google Maps than simply buying up a mapping company or two. MapQuest has been around a lot longer than Google Maps, invested a lot more money into it and even they couldn't keep up with Google.
You say i'm making things up, and you say that the other thread is more attainable, but do you really think Apple is going to release a four inch display on the iPhone after they just upgraded the display on the iPhone 4? No way that they are going to do that, not at least until 2012. There are other things that are unrealistic but i'm not going into detail...

Basically, everything I posted, I'm showing proof that Apple is working towards or entertaining the idea of improving the iPhone in the areas that I've showed. I'm not just wishing or hoping.

Before 2007 Apple never made a phone, and we saw how that turned out. Google maps on Android phones are great, Google maps on iOS are poor at best, Apple is not MapQuest or any of these other mapping companies, Apple is Apple. We've seen what they've done from iOS to OS X. I would bet that they would put out a better mapping navigational system than what we have now. And we all know how Apple loves to control every aspect of the phone.

Have you seen the front page of Macrumors, or Engadget or any of the tech blogs lately.

There's a lot of people reporting that the next iPhone has a four inch screen. Something that I'm super pumped for. :D

That's far and away my number one wish a 4" screen. I want to watch movies on the phone and browse the web without having to squint. And I'm certain that apple will deliver.

Improve Voice Commands
The voice commands as they are, are a novelty at best. Every trying getting a particular song/artist to play? It's a crap-shoot at best..

True story about the music voice commands. However....
The Bluetooth system I put in my BMW utilizes the iPhone 4's voice command feature for making calls, and it does a damn good job at that! I don't think its ever called the wrong person.
But I do think the voice command system can have some neat features added to it. I'm sure it's way off, but voice recognition reply to text messages would be neat.

My Wish for a New iPhone Version what ever you want to call it.

I need my phone to do the following for me:

Go to work as a Virtual Me:cool:

Do my Laundry:confused:

Mow the Lawn, and Clean up outside:D

Fix things in the House when they break:(

I also need a really good mute button like on "Click" the movie, when my wife starts sounding like the Charlie Brown adults, I can hit mute and hear nothing?

Until then, I am happy with my Stock iP4 as it is

iPhone 5 Mockup

Definitely looks a lot like some of the other concepts out there - but I've changed some things to fit what I envisioned :) Just sharing this with everyone.

I don't like the tiny / non-existent bezel, and would rather have a 3.7 inch with a bezel the size of the current iPhone; or a slightly larger phone, but with a larger bezel. And, "retina" display isn't possible with a screen larger than 3.8 inches, unless Apple can say that your head will be further back, so it being 280ppi will be indifferent to a 3.5 inch @ 330 ppi.

Also, I would like 720p @120fps (or 240 - 500fps - if it's possible, which I don't think it is, at the current thickness of the iPhone) and 1080p @ 30fps.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Im not sure if they will increase the camera from 5mp tho or if they will think its fine as it is. To be fair, the iphone 4 does take fantastic photos, the camera was a quantum leap from the 3gs and better than most higher mega pixel smart phones even today.
