don't know if it's already been mentioned, but i think the 5 finger pinch that apple has apparently been working on could be a cool way to get to widgets. the widgets could fly in like on a mac's dashboard

Yeah I think the 5 finger pinch will be implemented on the nest iPhone with the addition of a 4 inch screen

I don't know about you, but I can't even get 5 fingers on the screen at the same time, let alone make some gesture movements. That just seems like a crazy idea for a gesture. On top of that, it takes two hands (one to hold the phone) where you can now do most everything with one hand. Where's the advantage?

Yeah 5 fingers would be pretty difficult to pinch on the iPhone screen. 4 is doable, but 3 is where it becomes easy. And what's wrong with using just two fingers to manipulate the home screen?

I don't like the tiny / non-existent bezel, and would rather have a 3.7 inch with a bezel the size of the current iPhone; or a slightly larger phone, but with a larger bezel. And, "retina" display isn't possible with a screen larger than 3.8 inches, unless Apple can say that your head will be further back, so it being 280ppi will be indifferent to a 3.5 inch @ 330 ppi.

Also, I would like 720p @120fps (or 240 - 500fps - if it's possible, which I don't think it is, at the current thickness of the iPhone) and 1080p @ 30fps.

Thx for the comments! :) I just put this together from a ramp of rumors... I myself, I agree, I'm NOT Sure how I would FEEL about the whole face being the screen, but... I'm open to idea's! :) Personally, I really LOVE the iPhone 4.. EXCEPT they should have made the Back Glass Gorilla!

Sounds reasonable to me.

Im not sure if they will increase the camera from 5mp tho or if they will think its fine as it is. To be fair, the iphone 4 does take fantastic photos, the camera was a quantum leap from the 3gs and better than most higher mega pixel smart phones even today.

- I completely agree - I'm not sure if I believe the rumor mills, that they will Up the Camera to a 5MP. Something tells me that in order for them to make SUCH a drastic change to the Camera, it would alter many other aspects of the phone. (spacing,...etc). It'd be NICE though! :)

But either way - the Current 5MP takes wonderful photos! One of the best Camera's I've seen on a phone... and takes great video's! I'm very happy... It's replaced my pocket Camera. It's just more convenient to carry one device than two. :)

That would definitely be neat - But I'm wondering about people with really large hands... or people who don't have 5 fingers on one hand... but then again, if they WERE going to add this feature, Im sure they've figured out some work-around settings based on user inputs. :)

Definitely looks a lot like some of the other concepts out there - but I've changed some things to fit what I envisioned :) Just sharing this with everyone.

I just found this Article, http://www.9to5mac.com/52456/new-ip...-surfaces-perfect-for-a-home-button-less-ipad which states that Apple's new patent would allow for the screen to go to the edge... with touch sensitive smart bezels... this would make the concept I have created here awesome! , where the Home Button is now a touch sensitive Area, and no physical button to press... also giving that AREA its own sensitive commands... :) I just think it would be cool. I know Android phones already have this - but... Ya.. :)

... I know the phone itself does have a Volume rocker on the side, but why not a touch sensitive area by the home touch button. Hell... using a settings commands and changing it to something else.. like... maybe a zoom in and out feature for Browsing?! A back and forth feature? I dunno... Im just throwing some idea's out there. :)

I really believe that with the addition of Launchpad to OS X Lion, we may see the abandonment of the iOS home screen and multitasking bar.

it kind of makes sense to create a launchpad for iOS and keep the focus on the current app.

So with no apps open you expect to see just your wallpaper?

a wallpaper wouldn't be needed anymore with launchpad and the fact that iOS only has full-screen apps. just a transparent grey layer over the current running app.

and perhaps a better multitasking management would be implemented, allowing users to see which apps are currently running on their launchpad. for example, a blue glow around it or something.

See, the thing is, I think mission control would work beautifully on the iPad. Apple might have to tweak it slightly so that not every app appears though... imagine each time you opened mission control the last 15 apps (approximation) all pop up at the top... yeah no. So clearly a slightly altered methodology would be required to get the correct desired effect. Maybe differentiate from "saved state" apps and "open" apps somehow. I'm not sure exactly how Apple should implement it, but they are smart :)

and honestly the more I think about it, the more I want the iPhone to keep the same multitasking UI. Sure they could copy WebOS exactly, because I think they nailed it perfectly. But that's not apples style to just rip them off like that, plus it would require completely changing how iOS functions on so many levels... so not happening. Mission control on the iPhone would be pretty rough. shrink the full screen apps to take up a small row at the top of a 3.5 " screen? No thank you, way too small especially when you start adding up lots of apps. They may do the most logical thing and only show the 4 most recent then scroll to the side to access more (the exact same as it is now, but moved to the top with mini-screen shots, not app icon). But then why switch what we have now? It's easier to access from the bottom with your thumb, and app icons yields much faster recognition from such a tiny amount of space.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think what we have works great.

The features that will make me upgrade will be both a 4-inch screen and HSPA+. If either of those are missing, it's not worth it. Fingers crossed...

Apple needs to do something with the notifications system for sure either way.

First of all, I have to say the iPhone is my favorite by far that I've ever had. and I've had them all. From flip to texting, Droid and Droid Eris, a Blackberry, and my husband has a windows phone 7. Easily by far the smoothest, fastest, awesome phone.

I don't need a 4 inch screen, 3.8 would be just fine with me with the same awesome retina display.

New notification system. At least give me a little light that blinks until I check my message so I don't have to mash my poor home button to death.

A widget for my music. My experiences with droids haven't been awesome in any way, but those widgets are yummy.

Please oh please get rid of the glass back of the phone and give me my semi-rounded plastic/metal anything but glass! I know alot of you think it's beautiful. It's uncomfortable and so easily breakable.

Touch sensitive home button would be awesome also, though in the mockup you've added other touch buttons. I do really prefer the volume rocker etc of the model we have now.

I am expecting iOS 5.0 to be amazing. I think it will be another leap forward, similiar to January of 2007 when we first saw the iPhone.

Think back to the first time you saw swiping through photos, pinch to zoom and surfing the (almost) full web in Safari. All on a phone.

I think iOS 5 is going to be just as big. So, in what ways? Intelligence. I think Apple is going to use the Siri technology to reinvent some of the old Netwon Intelligence features. Voice control will be a big part, but it's not really *about* voice control. It's about intelligence. it's about data mining and deriving value from that data.

You'll be able to tell your iPhone "lunch with Bill" and it will know which Bill. It already knows what "lunch" means. Siri will be built into the iOS and provide resturant recommendations based on your location. There will be APIs allowing third parties to tap into the AI engine.

This intelligence will also be combined with the cloud-based iTunes for even better Genius recommendations around music, movies, TV, news content, etc.

What knows us better than our phone? It knows who we talk to and for how long, it knows the places we frequent, the content we read/watch/listen to. It knows the types of games we play and the work we do.

Apple is poised to take on Google and Facebook in one shot here. Search will no longer be required and social graph data will move from FB to iOS/iTunes.

And oh yeah, they'll fix notifcations and multi-tasking too.

My predictions for iphone 5 are:

It will be called iphone 5,
unveiled in june
A5 duel-core processor,
8mp camera,
1080p video camera,
3.7" screen but same form factor as iphone 4 but maybe without the glass on the back and instead the same material used on the ipad back,
No NFC(to soon),
No 4g (it would just make use in the uk jealous anyway),
HD front facing facetime camera,
longer battery life: at least 9 hours 3g internet use and 10 hours 3g talktime,
above 350ppi display,
32GB and 62GB memory ,
1GB RAM,
and wireless sync

wildcards
thunderbolt connection (wouldn't it be great to see for use macbook pro users),
4" screen,
1 button and only 1 button (the power button),
a mini iphone in multiple colours(not likely imo),
3d screen & camera (never),

Oh well heres hoping and i guess we'll find out in june,

Thanks for reading.

I'm really looking forward to a revamped OS altogether, no more grid-like app display, but still has the iOS feel to it. + A proper notification system.

When iOS was first launched, Steve Jobs said that this phone was "5 years ahead of its time" well, time has caught up and it's time for Apple to innovate once again with iOS 5.

Quite correct, it was leaps and bounds ahead in a lot of areas. However I remember being able to modify the basic look and feel of my old Sony Ericson K750i using themes. This process currently requires a jailbreak. The very fact that people are spending time and effort to 'jailbreak' their devices suggests that theres plenty of room for improvement and additional features.

What I would like to see in iOS 5:

Themes, and a SDK to allow developers to create some for us all to enjoy.

A useful lock screen, integrated to a re-vamped and 'useful' notification system. Accompanied with SDK tools that allow developers of news and social media apps to place updates onto your lock screen for at-a-glance checking. If implemented well, this could SAVE battery life. What currently involves a minute or so of opening and closing apps to check for changes could be achieved in a 10 second glance on the lock screen... Also when using my iPad for watching movies I would like it if notifications didn't cause me to have to stop watching said movie. a smaller semi translucent notification window or 'widget' from the bottom corner would be ideal to allow me to reply to a facebook status or tweet without stopping the movie or whatever else was being played...

The ability to sync wirelessly, and still use my phone whilst doing so. Obv. I don't expect to be able to listen to music etc during a sync but I would like to be able to send a text or phone someone.

As mentioned earlier, notification profiles. I'd love to have a subtle profile that I can hear in the house without deafening anyone, a profile that I can hear when on a train and a silent profile for when I'm at Uni or in meetings. Also an auto answer option after a set time when connected to the car would be nice.

Better access to settings. SBsettings on a jailbroken phone just about hits the spot.

iDevice tethering?? Picture the scene. I'm on the train and my iPad is on my lap with a movie on. I get a text on my iPhone but thats in my pocket. I now have to faff about and juggle my iGadgets to reply to the text without elbowing the rather large passenger sitting on half of my seat as well as his own.... However, If my iPad could connect to my phone via Wifi (perhaps through the proposed notification system). I could reply to the message on the iPad and it would be relayed back through the iPhone.
