It's interesting how many "looks like I'm going to S3 if this taller phone happens" comments there are when the rumored iPhone 5 and the S3 both have about 16:9 aspect ratio. Actually, the S3 is slightly taller. Are people only going with iPhone because they want the smaller aspect ratio?

S3: 1280x720; 1280/720 = 16/9.
5: 1136x640; 1136/640 is a tiny bit less than 16/9.

It's not the screen aspect ratio that matters, it's the phone's aspect ratio. The S3 isn't as tall a the iPhone 5.

Too bad the "unreal" mock-ups usually look better than what Apple actually comes up with. As much as I appreciate Apple's design, they need some fresh ideas instead of just recycling the same design year after year. While other phone manufacturers take the screen and design a significantly different looking phone around it, Apple takes the iPhone 4 and changes a few details for the second time (and probably a third time in 2013) now!

Yeah, that design you saw was practically an iPod Touch with a colored back. As far as other manufacturers, they have problems creating a design they can stick with and are pumping out 10 phones a year...most of which just plain suck.

1)It may be unfashionable, but I trust Apple to do the right thing.

2) Also a taller iPhone and a 16x9 screen sound good too.

1a) I don't think it's unfashionable, I really enjoyed the days when I could and did trust Apple. Sadly I cannot say the same with confidence these days. Yet I'm staying loyal in hopes they return to the class act they once were.

2a) 16x9 is a very good ratio, however by keeping the same width, it's only a half a solution. With absolutely no gain in the width, the same old problem remains. When using the phone in the landscape orientation, there's little room to work. The keyboard takes up half the screen, leaving very little room below the menu or title bar.

Once you've owned a smartphone with a 4.3" or larger display with the currently popular aspect ratio, the amount of room in landscape is simply amazing. With lots of room to compose messages and emails, it's a true example of comfort and speed. Something that Apple is usually known for.

Even if Apple would have added only 10mm of width, that would have been better than clinging to an existing dimension.

It gets even worse. If history is any indicator we may be stuck with this stretched out rather odd shaped phone for another two years. It seems that Apple just cannot get it's fill of cost cutting.

I love seeing people debate whether they are going to get the next iPhone. I can't even afford an iPhone 4 yet, but oh well I'm happy with my 3GS... *cries*

Anyway, the new display size doesn't bother me too much, but I don't really want a taller iPhone. They should have just made the Home button smaller and moved the speaker further up :p

One big bag of fail.

Bring back Steve.

Seemed particularly relevant.

Am I the only one who doesn't get it?

Why is nobody questioning the fact that iOS 5.1 renders at 1136x640 as shown? For me, this shouts that it's just a quirk of the simulator. Yes, iOS 6 scales better but "resolution independence" was one of the touted features.

I'm not against a taller iPhone in the slightest but I prefer to think more rationally. If we assume that the purpose of resolution independence is to unify the OS across existing form factors and allow easier creation of universal apps - wouldn't this perfectly explain the scaling?

It would be interesting to see what a 2272x640 simulator displays like - if it scaled up to 9-10 rows then it would confirm that it is just a side effect of the resolution independence - or maybe Apple plan to release a 9 inch long iPhone

5 rows on the 1136x640 sim don't look more crowded to me than 4 on 960x640 and I think many apps I use will benefit from the increased horizontal pixel space: mail, music lists, reminders, calendar, etc.

The height-to-width ratio of the whole phone seems fine to me too (at least based on leaks/renderings/speculation), and I think I have reasonable design sensibilities.

And there she BlOOOOOOOOOWS!
Truth be told, you complainers will all come to accept it, and then praise it. History will indeed repeat itself. Those of you who have said it is sooooo important for you to "one hand" your phone will no longer spew that garbage excuse as that will now be over. Remember how you trashed the GS2 for being "too tall" to reach the top? Remember all that BS praise of being able to "one hand" the iphone? Gone! Since you were unable to reach the top of the GS2, you won't be able to reach the top of the new longphone either. And since you have been expressing how important this ability is for your phone experience, you better drop the ipnone now and better find another phone where you can "one hand" it. Or else just stick with the 4S forever.
But I'm betting this will become another flip flop of opinions.......again.

By not making the phone wider, they can still one hand it better than the competition which is actually to wide, not too tall.

Am I the only one who doesn't hate the elongated screen? I'm perfectly happy with the size of the iPhone now, but if they have to make it bigger, I'd rather have it the same width. I guess we'll see what it looks like when it comes out. I trust Apple to make something awesome, I hope it is!

Huh? I was agreeing with you. And the link I posted is an explanation in english vs one that you posted which is just a diagram?

Sorry. I assumed you were making a different point based on the article promoting an alternate definition of the term. My fault. :)

As you said, they did provide a formula for calculating 'retina-required' PPI at a certain viewing distance. But apple has just "randomly" stated what the typical viewing distance for eah device type is. If I remember correctly , when the iPhone 4 and it's 640*960 display was released most android phones were like 3.7" 480*80 displays that would've been 'retina' at say two inches further away.

I assume that was supposed to be 480x800? If so, then it would have taken farther-than-iPad typical distances to hit 'retina' for those displays. That's only about 230ppi (which was typical for a 'high-res' phone display at the time), compared to the iPad's 264ppi or the iPhone's 326ppi.

The iPad's 'retina' distance is about 16 inches, so that 3.7" 480x800 display's retina distance is about 18.3 inches. The iPhone's retina distance was 11 inches, so that's *significantly* more than 2 inches difference. (It's actually closer to *double* than 2 inches.)

The hysterical reactions are par for the course. It only seems worse each year because these forums get busier and more and more people who type faster than they can think start posting nonsense.

The move to a 16:9 ratio 4" screen was no doubt planned a long way back so this whole Steve wouldn't approve garbage can be ignored. It takes longer than one year to design, test, build and launch a product like this.

And it makes a lot of sense too. It's better for video and provides more screen space without making the handset unwieldy. Of course everyone will have different pretences but I don't want to hold a massive slab to my face to make calls, or have to use two hands to use my media player or send email. The ever larger screens on Android phones are, I believe, mostly down to the need for manufacturers to differentiate themselves. They all run basically the same software and have the same apps so they really can only one up each other through the specs race. Bigger screens, more cores, more RAM. Some may like that and more power to their elbows I say. That's be beauty of choice.

S3: 1280x720; 1280/720 = 16/9.

This is a pretty good-looking phone. I think the long iPhone 5 will look great.

Width-wise, the rumored iPhone has the same number of pixels as iPhone 4/4S. Height-wise, it adds 320 more pixels. That will look ridiculously tall. I have seen S3 in person and the height/width ratio looks more pleasing and usable.
