This is it. The new iPhone with 4" display. Come on people. You say you want bigger display. 4" is bigger than 3.5" so you get what you ask for. Now let's get back to work.

Those of you who have said it is sooooo important for you to "one hand" your phone will no longer spew that garbage excuse as that will now be over.

Because people use their phones differently than you, it's a "garbage excuse"?

Remember how you trashed the GS2 for being "too tall" to reach the top?

Nope, I don't. Don't give 2 craps about the GS2.

Remember all that BS praise of being able to "one hand" the iphone? But I'm betting this will become another flip flop of opinions.......again.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Without people like you, what would we do? Oh wait! You forgot the rolleyes....

No... wait. There it is! Now your post is perfect.

Also, where are the default Apple apps? Where is the Mobile Phone, for example?
I have just tried to add all these sites as short cut icons on my 4s.
Seems the "touch arcade" has different icon lol.
Well, may be it is added before and the icon didn't update?

I should check with my XCode for the default apps when I am at home.

Looks like I will be moving onto Android.

Only way I'll stay is if they announce something phone specific come sept 12. This design and iOS6 (from what we know) isn't enough to keep me wanting to upgrade.

But... but the OS...

An Apple product with a bunch of little Samsung products inside.

1113.77777..... is not irrational.

Fake too. They have App Store apps running on the simulator, and some default apps are just gone.

The simulator doesn't have the phone app built in. It has a few of the default apps but not all. And to reiterate, those are not App store apps, they're simply Safari shortcuts where an icon has been provided.

I still don't understand what significantly different we'll see in this phone. Taller screen ? Ok, I guess a taller screen is nice, but I assume all the current apps will look bad on this, with either a gap on top/bottom or stretched. Must be infuriating for the app-developers to change to yet another resolution, especially something that is of a completely different aspect ratio...I mean without a significant design difference in iOS6, something that exploits these extra pixels in an original way that makes me go "ah yes, of course!" I hardly see the point. Another row of apps, thats it ? videos and hardly anything is made to fit this kind of ratio. very strange move from apple - I hope they'll prove me wrong.

apart from the screen I don't understand what's new, what makes people want to upgrade? Elighten me please someone! I have a iphone 4s, I wouldn't mind buying an iphone 5 just for the kicks of new tech. But, if all I get is a metal band and a larger screen, what's the point? Ok, of course I'm expecting faster processors, slightly better cam and the obvious evolution stuff. But currently the iphone 4s isn't slow, its responsive and has good specs. I don't see what can make Apple estimate a sale of such extreme amounts that they are expecting unless its something that make people want ditch their old phone.

The new connector is a nice and needed change. But for the consumers that all ready has a lot of iToys and Accessories it will take quite an investment to change, so it's not something I instantly want - I'll adapt over time.

All this talk about the design doesn't make sense to me at all. It looks EXACTLY like the previous phone, except the metal back band....The metal band doesn't look all that awesome either, it looks like a sticker behind a iphone 4 design....it's just slightly different which is ok of course, but I'm not paying hundreds of dollars for a new back side. "Nothing to see here, move along..."

loving all the 'this is stupid' 'will be a huge disappointment' 'im holding off this one' comments

why dont you just wait until you see the damn thing in action before passing judgement.

Apple will make you want it, they are good at that.

If anything has ever been proven in the past, it's that people need to be told what they want. So quit yer whining and enjoy the future of iPhones.

How many times in the history of iPhone releases have we gotten this close to the release without having a handful of known hardware updates already? We knew about the knew shape and size of the 4, we knew what Siri was going to do, and we knew about the A5 chip. Please have a seat.
The iPhone 4 was lost and recovered by a tech site. The A5 was already in the iPad. How many times have rumors been wrong? iPhone mini anyone?

And, wait, the company still has yet to announce the product. By the way you already know the size and shape of this phone.

It would be nice if the details of the tweak were published so it could be independently confirmed.

Someone posted the details of the tweak here:

http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?bl...400471793402573500&page=1&token=1344421346397

I've tried it with the latest official xcode release (non beta) and it works fine:

[UIScreen mainScreen].description:

<UIScreen: 0x6a58c50; bounds = {{0, 0}, {320, 568}}; mode = <UIScreenMode: 0x6a589e0; size = 640.000000 x 1136.000000>>

Probably won't be long before the 1st "iPhone5-ready" apps start appearing on the AppStore...

I really don't hope it doesn't just have a longer screen... They used to ridicule Android for fragmentation and now this...?
It's not really fragmentation, but say it is -- Android still has hundreds of different devices with varying screen sizes, resolutions, GPUs, CPUs, qty of RAM, etc.

There is no phone or default apps on the simulator, no app store either in iOS 5 :

This is a screenshot straight from my Mac, Xcode 4.4 and the 5.1 SDK.

I'm on the fence about this. I see this being beneficial for someone who locks their screen orientation (I do) because it will show more content during web browsing, texting, reading books, notes, etc. while keeping it one hand usable easily. I had some play time with one of the new Razr's (wider/taller) and found it to be a pain. If there was something on the left side, especially upper left side that I tried to press while holding it with just my right hand, I had to shift my fingers on the underside to make it easier to do. I don't have small hands either, but I am no Shaq, either.*

You can't make everyone happy. I can say this, though. I will not be looking at upgrading my 4S just based on screen size. In fact, it will make a 0% influence on upgrading to me. There will have to be other things to gain my interest.*

I don't see this as a fail, and I don't see this as a win. Just my $0.02

Am I the only one who doesn't get it?

It would be interesting to see what a 2272x640 simulator displays like - if it scaled up to 9-10 rows then it would confirm that it is just a side effect of the resolution independence - or maybe Apple plan to release a 9 inch long iPhone

I like your interest... So I gave it a go.
I don't have the iOS 6 simulator (I'll get it after work and give it a go), but I've tried the "hack" to check out my app on 5.1. It does the scaling thing, spreading out the icons as per the article.
So, I then tried your suggestion, 2272x640. Had to rotate left because it wouldn't fit on my Macbook Pro's screen...

As you can see, it's still got the iPhone keyboard, it also spreads out the icons. It didn't auto-rotate, so it's not defaulted to the iPad simulator. I tried other values that aren't 1136 or 2272, and it defaults to the iPad simulator.

I can't click any icons, because there's an odd offset, it must just not like it. I tried clicking the 3rd icon on the row, and it hit the second.

I'll connect my Macbook pro up to my TV when I get home, to get a slightly better resolution image!

Interesting.
I am wondering if this scaling included the width.
Can you please help checking with more different resolution?
(Honestly my Mac image is not completely ready...Strange VM Tools)
Something like width=800, resolution=1920X1280...etc

What's the point of a proportionately bigger screen? To take up more room in your pocket? Just hold the phone closer to your face.

A longer screen actually allows for new/expanded fields.

Well, for someone like me, who uses the iPhone almost exclusively in "portrait-mode" the proportionately bigger screen would provide enough space for slightly bigger keyboard buttons...making it (at least for me) much less likely to hit the wrong button when thumb typing one handed...

As I said in another thread, there is no absolute in ergonomics, as different people tend to have different size hands, thumbs, eyesight etc.

So what I'm trying to say is that every design path has to be a compromise in ergonomics...while you are one who will be happy with the only taller screen, I am certainly one of those who would like a display being taller and wider...

Anyway, this may well be a good time to keep my 4s and give some other phone (win 8 or android) a trial year...glad to have three simcards on my contract :)
