just horrible

For those worried about the "long-phone" you should look at this thread.

Turns out the sony xperia play has the same 4 inch 16:9 screen, and it doesn't look to bad.

Exactly what I was going to say, at first I couldn't understand why apple would do something like that, then I looked at that picture and it looked good, I guess I'll have to wait and have the phone in my hands and then see how it feels/looks.

The interesting thing is how real apps will scale. Will they still run in a 960x640 window?

Will the screen still be considered retina? What will the ppi be with a 4inch screen?

I bet Apple will not mention anything about retina for the iPhone 5. Or just quickly say 'still retina'.

Not sure what some folks are complaining so loudly about. A 4" widescreen has many benefits with few drawbacks; better video experience, ability to view more content in portrait, extra row of apps, etc. while maintaining the ability for one-handed operation, with the only downside being that it's taller by about 8 millimeters (if the rumored dimensions are true).

And if the rumors are true, we'll get all of the aforementioned benefits in a new, unibody aluminum enclosure that is significantly smaller, volumetrically, than the 4/4S, and will put other, generic looking smartphones like the GS3 and GNexus to shame.

I hate how most of the comments in the 9to5Mac article are about how hard this is for developers. I'm a developer, and I don't care.

My apps already dynamically resize to whatever resolution the device is. In fact, my app will probably look great out-of-the-box without me changing anything. I think it's even ironic that non-developers are expressing non-existent developer woes to justify their distaste for change.

Development aside, I've been supporting this resolution since day one and I still do. I think it's a nice refresh without changing much, but it'll be awesome to have more on my screen for minimal device changes.

Really? just rely on autoresizingmask property.
It is depending on how complicated your apps are, if it is just uitableview, of course, it is will resize properly by itself. What if the app is landscape mode.

Also, for designer, they need to design 1136 x 640 launch screen as well.

Wow, big surprise on the lame resolution. Seems an especially significant letdown considering the competing 'droid based phones are running 1280x720 pretty standard these days. Hopefully this report ends up being off somehow; will have a GN tomorrow that I'll be using until the 5 comes out but it may end up being my new permanent phone.

For the first time I'm skeptical that this phone will go over well (not just don't know, actually think it might not).

Mainly cause I see few people who are happy. Those of us who were happy with the screen as before are not happy (especially since they changed the aspect ratio, if they are going to make it bigger they should have made it wider too). We liked the screen as is and it seems most people of my opinion also agree that they should have at least kept the aspect ratio the same if they had to increase the screen size.

Those who have been clamoring for a larger screen wanted more than 4" (4" was what those of us who didn't want a larger screen wanted *at max*) and are disappointed it's just a mere 4" (or even agreeing with us that liked the smaller screen that elongating the screen is pointless).

And a few people who I really don't understand (sorry) are happy cause they can watch videos better (Honestly, I just don't understand why that would be that important. I just don't see using a smartphone mainly for watching videos and 16:9 is not really great for anything else but watching videos. THe reason you see so many monitors that size these days is it is cheaper for the companies making the displays to market it as a great aspect ratio and not have different aspect ratios they have to deal with. Less different stuff to manufacture). And honestly, those are the only people I see happy about this.

Apple should have s*** or gotten off the pot, so to speak. Just making it taller is making very few people happy.

I was implying usage of autoresizingmasks. If a layout is more complicated, custom positioning should still be relative to screen size. Landscape mode doesn't change anything.

In regards to launch screens, if they were following User Interface Guidelines it should just require screenshotting the initial screen and removing any dynamic attributes.

This topic, and...hell, the whole taller screen iPhone 5 debacle has shown me one very funny thing. We've got this whole group of people claiming to support a single company because they're allegedly the most innovative and revolutionary of the bunch, right?

So why are they the first to complain when this company tries something different?

TALLER IPHONE? STEVE JOBS IS ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE!

because the new iPhone 4SL is neither innovative or revolutionary.

yea, an Apple product

An Apple product with a bunch of little Samsung products inside.

----------

How do they have App Store apps installed in the iPhone simulator? There is no App Store access. For now, I call PS shenanigans.

Also, where are the default Apple apps? Where is the Mobile Phone, for example?

----------

It's not quite exactly 16:9 ....

(Exactly 16:9 would be 1137.777777777777777777777777777...x640 - but Apple wouldn't be irrational.)

1113.77777..... is not irrational.

Fake too. They have App Store apps running on the simulator, and some default apps are just gone.

Damnit. I guess this pretty much confirms it. Seriously Apple, when we cried for a bigger screen, I think it's safe to say most of us were more concerned with width.

I guess that'll teach us for asking for anything different from Apple.

Seriously, Apple, you should know we wanted you to 'innovate' and do exactly what every other smart phone builder was doing. How dare you do something different.

I love iOS and would much rather stay with it, but the dinky screen in my 4S is just too pathetic, and stretching it a bit taller isn't going to cut it. I don't care if siri on the next iPhone can read my mind and obey my thoughts, if this is the screen we get, I'm leaving the platform.

We'll see Mr.Oracle ;)
