Not officially I don't think, but it's supposed to be 21st Sept.

Plenty of time then - who knows though, they might have nailed it already and surprise us all with an announcement on Monday for a Friday release!

So you think that if by beta 7 there are still bugs, apple will go ahead and release the GM anyway just to stay on track with some imaginary timeline the community has invented?

If there are still major bugs, I don't think they will have a problem with reaching beta 12; similarly I wouldn't be shocked if they decided to stop at 4, providing it was bug free.

From what I can tell the timeline for releasing betas is driven by the progress of bug elimination. Devs in the beta program find the issues and report them, apple fix them and release the next beta, the issues are confirmed as fixed and any new ones reported. It's a life cycle. If the cycle needs to continue through to beta 24, it will - Whether that keeps with the 'Pattern' is completly and utterly irrelevant.
You clearly don't know how this process goes, but I'll bite. This isn't an "imaginary timeline"... if the rumors are correct and they're announcing on the 12th and shipping the 21st of September that's the exact opposite of an imaginary timeline, that's a very concrete timeline. The OS needs to be done with enough time to load them onto these new devices. This phone WILL NOT ship with iOS 5.1 on it... it just won't happen.

If you want to go your way about it then the GM release of 5.1 was really just iOS 5 Beta 13... that's not how it goes. They'll release whatever beta they're up to with the next iPhone and iron out any bugs in a 6.0.x release like they do every time. 5.1's main feature was supposed to be a battery fix for everyone with the 4S... sounds like they fixed an issue that was present in 5.0 and did so after 5.0 went GM. *Gasp* But that means that the GM for 5.0 wasn't a perfect build, right?

Or they could be holding back further betas to prevent Samsung and Google stealing top secret new features. ;)

Oh I'm not suggesting for one moment that the release will be perfect, maybe I didn't make myself clear. (Well, OK, obviously I didn't... ;) )

What I was getting at was the way a lot of people are assuming that another beta is due because the last one came out two weeks ago and there is another one 'due' according to the 'pattern'. It may very well be the case that there are still bugs by the time the phone is ready for manufacture. Yes, the final version may or may not need to be available on a certain date, but that wont affect how many betas we get through between now and then. It could be 2, it could be 200. It certainly won't be one every two weeks just because that's what the pattern dictates.

You are right - I clearly don't know how the process works, but I think I have a fair idea of how it doesn't work.

Also, (As we're biting...) if the rumors suggest an announcement on the 12th and release on the 21st, I think by the very nature of a rumor, that falls further into the realms of imagination than that of 'concrete timelines'.

Yes it has to be ready for the new iPhone release whether it's completely bug free or not.

That's not something Apple would do. If there's a bug, they're not gonna release the update till it's fixed, whether a new phone is about to be released or not. Back in iOS 4.2, there was a Wifi bug on the iPad in the GM and they delayed it and made it 4.2.1 with the bug fixed and released a new GM.

Hence why I said if they're correct. Can't really go the route I went unless you assume that the rumors are right...

iOS 5 had a ton of bugs between iMessage, Notification Center, and overall battery and was still pushed onto the 4S. This release is different since they're going to inevitably package it with new hardware. The iPad shipped with 3.2 and got upgraded to 4.2.1 later. If 4.2 was a whole new release (a la 5.0) they would have shipped the iPad with 4.2 regardless.

Great. Glad we settled that then. Really happy I went to the trouble to explain my reasoning further (Quite adequately, I must add) just to have you concentrate on the footnote of my post. Now, I'm not saying I was right and I wanted you concede, but it would have been nice to enter into more of an adult discussion about the matter, or for you just to leave the discussion and not comment more on it.

That's the problem with the internet nowadays - Trust me I've read it twice - Its full of people just trying to rub each other up the wrong way, instead of people trying to understand each other a bit better.

I can honestly say I don't really remember any bugs in the iOS 5 GM except for the battery life on the 4S when it was released, but Apple was pretty quick to try to remedy it.

I am not sure what you are saying...

The release date for beta 4?
Or for the GM?
Or the official iOS 6 launch?

I would say.
Beta 4 --- today.
GM --- a week or 2 before the phone event.
Official launch --- at the event. (sept. 12th)

IMO the GM will be released at the September event (Sept 12th?) and the public launch will align with the release of the 6th Gen iPhone.

Before the final release Apple slows down release rate of the developer builds. So I don't think we will see Beta 4 any time soon.

Usually the phone ships with the newest OS.
And from past events the phone is available for order that day. So I would say the GM is before the event.

The new phone is available to PRE ORDER the day of the event...it is not released for another 7-14 days

Well actually the September 21st date is supposedly for the iPhone 5, whereas the iOS 6 update would be released a few days before and the GM would be released at the September 12th event.

not likely as all past and current/future plans are being disclosed in court by both parties
