Is it not possible to just erase all content & settings ? Last time i did this i was not forced to update & just needed to resync & activate .

I know its a huge pain but its better than being forced to update .

That worked for me when I wanted to reinstall 5 after 6 was released. Presumably it still works in 6 but I haven't tested it :)

newest iPad mini iteration running 6.1.3 not eligible for 6.1.3

Wow, is this true?
You cannot restore to iOS6 if the iOS7 update has downloaded?

Did not mean to say that / Not necessarily. But APPL would certainly like that and seemed to have set it so ...

Meanwhile it means that i CANNOT restore the iPad mini 64GB running iOS 6.1.3 to 6.1.3 at all.

that is - in its own little world of things - serious enough ...

buying Apple products since 1984,
but the bucket stops for me at
MacOS X 10.7 Lion,
iOS 6.1.3 and iTunes 10.7

MacOS X 10.8 ML lacks direct NOTES sync,
iOS 7 is misguided taste, heavily overdesigned,
the same holds true for iTunes 11.x
and the the Music App on the iPad, even under 6.1.3.

did that - but i guess that my "itunes 10.7 based computer backup" of the pad reinstalled iO7 again or it downloaded it afresh cos i left it on WiFi while restoring 40 GB+ of Music..

APPL Support told me to google for a solution ..

The following quote is from a thread abt. not being able to daisychain a MiniDisplayPort Monitor behind a Thunderbolt-Monitor ...

Once again Apple decides what's best for the customer.

... yep ...

The consistency for closing an app and closing a web page is that your "throwing" the window out of the list. It's irrelevant that one list is vertical and one is horizontal.

Further more, swipe left to delete IS universal across the OS.

It should be possible to delete the download without updating if your not jailbroken .

Erase all contents & settings used to brick jailbroken devices so those people are SOL .

Just erase the device , then as soon as you connect to iTunes set up as a new device & dont restore any backups .

Resync till there's less than 350mb of free space or make sure wifi is never active while charging .

Total PITA thanks to apple .

Restoring the backup from the device that originally downloaded the update won't restore the update. I verified this last night on my phone after it downloaded the update. I made a backup as soon as I discovered it downloaded and then erased all content and settings. I restored the backup and the other space was very low, at around 245MB or so. I immediately turned off WiFi and then filled up all the space with music.

Beautifully concise, written in clearly-defined A-B-C-D fashion (& it only took through page 9!) I'm not an English teacher, but if I was, I'd give you A++ !! Here's a reward, have an "apple" from the teacher's desk! :D

The automatic update download feature has been available since iOS 5, as explained here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623

As it says, and mentioned in this thread previously, three conditions must be met before an automatic download takes place.

1. Device connected to internet via wifi.
2. Device connected to external power.
3. Sufficient storage space available for the download, and installation process.

If the automatic download is not wanted, make sure conditions 1 & 2 are not enabled simultaneously. Remember to disable wifi before charging, or charge with device turned off.

No, there's a prerequisite. One must have to even remember that:

1). Apple actually does auto-download a new OS. I mean just how much experience does the average Apple user have on this.

Frankly I didn't remember this (and im a bit more than just average). This is the first new/update I didn't want. Why would I be familiar with these requirements? And don't forget, many people don't follow Apple's OS process. They now have no recourse if they went ahead and updated.

In my opinion, Apple should:

1). Support the option to downgrade to the previous OS until the next full-blown revision comes out.

2). Auto-downloading should be a process we opt into rather than have to resort to gimmicks that the majority of the population doesn't even know about.

3). For goodness sake, give us a way to get rid of those d@&m badges for the OS and for apps we have decided not to update. I've looked at the update, made my decision, stop nagging me.

This isn't hard to do, I can design the UI and write the use case in about 30 mins. The coding and testing would take maybe a day. I must say I'm pretty disappointed with Apple.

How ignorant. If someone chooses not update, that's their business. Just remember what you said when you are forced to do something you don't want to do, such as when your parents forced you to eat your vegetables at dinner tonight.

Ahhh... but eating vegetables is good for you.

So what are you really trying to say is that Apple is dishing out some tough love and that even though we may not like it, it's for the best. ;)

Apple support told me they want to force everyone into iOS7 and the waste of space caused by the download is a welcome incentive. No point in escalating any complaints about the auto download.

If anyone ever needed proof that you have no sovereignty over you iDevices, here it is. Apple can degrade you experience or take away features (storage capacity) at free will, at any time. You cant get support outside of Apple Care, but Apple sure can degrade your device and shrug about it.

I'm certainly not going to further invest into the iOS walled garden until they change their mind on this issue. This really stinks.

I can say i'm an Apple fanboy. But i'm not upgrading to Tim Cook's tainted, misguided, and frankly boring iOS 7. Sounds like i've judged it well.

One night of not paying attention, and they downloaded it onto mine. Was being careful to keep my iPhone 5 ios 7 free, after the grief I went through to get back onto ios 6. I'm guessing that I'll wake up one morning to finding ios 7 on my phone again. Until then, I'll just keep enjoying the last of the real iPhones!

There is NO way to prevent this unless you turn OFF your wifi or turn OFF your phone during prolonged periods of inactivity, the automatic download will get onto your phone.

BTW, I had an automatically downloaded ios 7. When I turned off my phone (conference meeting) and turned it back on, the screen was going through a software update and I NO way of reverting. Disappointing. Be cautious when turning off your phone.
