If I understand the rage correctly – yes, indeed: A 3GB file will download on your iDevice no matter what you do (no "disable automatic OTA update downloads" in the settings) and after that, you get the red "1" on the settings icon and can't delete this file even if you have no intention to install iOS 7. (As the file is "only" about 1GB big when you download it on iTunes, maybe the rest is "blocked space" on your iPad for installation?) The file won't download as long as you have too less space left.

That's how I understand the infos I get here.

EDIT:

Just saw this ... So "only" 750 MB and not 3GB? Where does the second number come from, is this the free space you need to have on your iDevice when finally choosing to install?

Correct, it will refuse to install if it doesn't have enough free space, just like any other software. 3GB is only "wasted" if you are actually installing the download, and much/all of it will be reclaimed after the install (I have no idea how much space iOS 6 or 7 takes up offhand, but it's probably similar enough to just say "all").

You're not forced to enable automatic over-the-air updates. Why enable it if you don't want the update? Sounds like a problem that demands the "world's smallest violin" to play.

Mine wasn't active and apple still shoved it down my throat. So I caved and installed to the space back.

There are very few improvements (for me mostly the easier way to mark-all-read). Everything else feels like a downgrade. It's small things like sliders that are too small now, buttons in weird places, but also the look and feel of it that I don't like. The animations are hideous. I don't have time for that and wish they'll add a way to turn that nonsense off.

This is like apple's vista. Good ideas in general - poor execution in need of an overhaul.

There, here's your new internet meme. iOS Vista.

Thanks for the clarification. So when I have, let's say, 2.5 GB free storage, it already WILL download the 750MB iOS7 file, leaving me with about 1,75 GB free. I can't delete this file, but on the other hand, iOS7 also can't be installed if I don't free up more space. However, it won't be INSTALLED automatically, even if I have 50 GB free, will it? Will there pop up "Do you want to install iOS 7?" notifications once the file is downloaded or won't there be any installation action until I specifically go into the settings and start the update there? (asking for my father – afraid he will accidentally install iOS 7 if windows pop up ...)

It doesn't automatically update! Mine was nagging me for days, I ignored it. I plugged my iPhone into my mac more than once and it didn't force an update on me, only suggested I download it. I finally updated to the very latest iOS7.0.2 last night through my own choice and couldn't be happier with the difference it's made to the speed and battery life of my iPhone 5. Anyone affected must have have had some existing auto-update setting.

Cry me a river. Update your damn phones. 7 is heaven.

Maybe, just maybe, it's earned much opposition and loathing for a reason?

I never saw iOS 5 or iOS 6 (when they were introduced) ever face any sort of "design hatred" and opposition/criticism like we see in iOS7.

Personally, I think Apple went a bit too far with this flat-and-crayola design. I could understand the need to pare down the legacy "skeumorphic" elements, sure.

Personally for me, I'll eventually "accept it", knowing that Apple will eventually (gradually) refine and evolve the flat design closer to people's tastes and liking. That's inevitable. So for me, it's not a big deal. But what is surprising to me is that there is very much an open rebellion for many that strongly find it repulsive and hard to embrace.

Apple is historically known for and legendary for having great design taste. But with the release of iOS7, one has to wonder if they made a big miscalculation? Too drastic a design change too soon?

My sympathy goes with the Rebels on this one.

Aren't we talking about to different things here, iPad pre-loads OTA update on the device in comparison to iTunes asking to download it on the computer? Genuinely not sure...

Amen!!

I didn't like iOS7 when I first saw it, but after updating my iPhone, iOS7 is bliss. I can't understand why so many people is so hesitant to update

Look past the new design (it is also fully not in my taste) but operation is fantastic and better than before.

I have got my iPhone 5 on iOS 7, but I have kept my iPad 4 on iOS 6 because of reports on these forums of iOS 7 slowing down iPads. I have automatic downloads turned off on iOS 7, too many stories of updates messing things up, so I like to delay things a bit.

Since iOS 7 came out, both devices keep saying I have an update waiting, but when I check there is nothing there.

And another reason I have not updated my iPad: I like a lot of iOS 7, but the blindingly bright white menus, such as in the Settings app are terrible, and would be even worse on the large screen.

I sent a suggestion to Apple that the white background be semi-transparent, and allow the wallpaper to show through, mirroring the look of Control Center, which works much better, and would make iOS 7 more consistent.

So let me get this straight:

People are whining because THEY chose to update their phone without realizing it was a new OS? How silly.

I'd like 7 more if the UI was consistent. For example: Want to close an app, swipe up, but want to close a web page, swipe it to the left. If it isn't unified, you are just confusing people. I can no longer recommend an iphone to senior citizens because the learning curve just dramatically increased. I also can't upgrade my other devices because I can't have 2 older devices upgraded and 2 not. The different UI would drive the kids nuts.

Isn't there a switch to disable automatic updates?
Why are people crying about if they don't read the manual or at least try to explore by themselves?

Same hint for you: Learn to read. There is no switch to prevent the automatic DOWNLOAD of the file. Please don't confuse download and install in this thread.

Don't underestimate senior citizens, they are smarter than a fifth grader. They may just play dumb to get your attention.
I haven't heard a single one (of those I know) complain about it yet.

Now regarding your kids, if something as simple as an OS update would drive them nuts, I suggest you get professional help. I know a 6 year old who did the update by himself and told me he was so happy about it. I think you are spoiling your kids too much.

You realize how stupid you sound right? With apps being updated, and Apple's forced obsolescence, people pretty much have to update. Sure they finally allow you to download the 'last compatible version' but that is just a short term solution. Most service based apps require updates to continue working.

To all the "Get iOS 7, for god's sake!" sayers: I helped my father to slowly get used to iOS 6 and its functions on the iPad I bought him. He's old, not really tech-savvy and for the first time with an iOS update, a lot of thing really changed. There's no need to update his iPad to iOS 7, on the contrary: It would definitely decrease his experience.

At the moment, my father has about 2,3 GB left on his iPad - does this mean that the update won't download automatically? Is the only chance to keep the free space under 3 GB and wait for a Jailbreak for 6.1.4 to install something from the Cydia store that prevents this forever??

Damn it, Apple.

You may be surprised. My dad is 77, not tech savvy. He saw my iPad running iOS 7 and asked if he could get it. That same day, the upgrade was offered for his iPad and he went ahead and downloaded it.

He is having no difficulty at all - as far as he can tell, there is no difference whatsoever in the OS, which is what I've said all along: iOS 7 is basically just a skin on iOS 6. There are *very* few actual changes in functionality and anyone who knows how to use iOS 6 should have no difficulty moving to iOS 7.

That's great for your dad, but you can believe me ... I know MY dad and although I'm sure he will still be able to figure the basic things out, of course, iOS7 would surely be more complicated for him as iOS6 – especially the Safari browser with the totally new icons etc. (Although I have only seen it on the iPhone at this moment - probably a little less different than before on the iPad.)

So why wouldn't you want it? It performs better than iOS 6 on the same hardware. My 3 year old iPhone 4 is like a brand new phone. Performance is better all around, especially activating the camera. That used to drive me NUTS in iOS 6! Sometimes it would take 10 seconds or more for the camera to become active. Now it's nearly instant in iOS 7.
that simply sint the experience of a lot of iphone 4 users.
The address book/contacts is crashy and slow.
Many apps that ran fine on 6 are having problems on 7.
It's no just flat, its very bright color combinations.
Also MANY things have changed. It is different enough to piss of someone who isnt a fan of apple. But has an iphone. (like many of our older users)
