Aren't we talking about to different things here, iPad pre-loads OTA update on the device in comparison to iTunes asking to download it on the computer? Genuinely not sure...

Nope. Got the update notification on my iPhone first. Even warned me of the space requirements. I'm on about exactly the same thing, just that it didn't force me to start downloading it either on my iPhone or when I plugged it into my Mac (Which is exactly what I just said)

I could see where 3GB of space taken up for an update people may or may not want is not a good thing - especially if you were running a 16GB or god forbid a 8GB iPhone - that would really stink.

Apple shouldn't make this kind of choice for users as a default, leave that kind of thing to Google - it should be an alert the user says yes to and then downloads in the background.

Just as an aside, my buddy has a Nexus 4 and Google did the same thing with the latest update, just downloaded it and unpacked it on the phone whether he wanted to install it or not (he went forward with the install but the presumptuousness of taking the space was annoying).

Apple you can be better than this.

Same hint for you: Learn to read. There is no switch to prevent the automatic DOWNLOAD of the file. Please don't confuse download and install in this thread.

You gotta be kidding me... How in the world is it going to install by itself if it doesn't download it first? And it also requires you to tap on the button and accept the conditions. Unless you are a happy button-taper, the update shouldn't install.

Not on an iPad 2, unless you like waiting for too-long animations to complete before your device (and apps you start, and apps you close, and...) become(s) usable.

I'm running it on my iPad 2 and it looks great and is snappy. And my wife and I have iOS 7 on our 4 and 4S. Both work perfectly. We love it.

Please read this thread again. You'll mabye figure out what the complains are about.

As far as I remember, you also need to agree to some terms and conditions (legal stuff), am I right?
The point is: Updates don't install by themselves.

You aren't even TRYING to understand that we are not talking about automatic installation, but "only" about automatic, undeletable download of the installer file (and therefore wasted space on your iDevice even if you don't want to install iOS 7), are you?

You realize how stupid you sound right? With apps being updated, and Apple's forced obsolescence, people pretty much have to update. Sure they finally allow you to download the 'last compatible version' but that is just a short term solution. Most service based apps require updates to continue working.

I think you sound more stupid than I do. How is it Apples fault if a developer doesn't update their app for the new OS? How in 2013 is it still a mystery to some people that when new OS's come out, some old apps stop working if the devs don't update them.

Learn to read.

I do know how to read and when my iPhone prompted me to update I read that it was an update and clicked OK. If someone has automatic updating on what do they expect?

Exactly! I got a prompt, I'm sure everyone else did too.

Have you spent any time with it? You'll find that flat is not so bad. When I first heard that iOS 7 was going to be "flat", I said "yuck!", but it's more than just a flat UI, it's an entirely different approach that works really well. Depth was added in a different way.

I have had it on my old iPhone 4 since the public launch last week. There are some serious problems with this flat approach. They decided to take away visual cues to make the ui more "flat" which impedes usability. For example, the calendar doesn't have color coded dots on the days anymore to tell you what kind of appointment it scheduled. Another one is the top bar in the home screen. They took away the shadow behind the time and battery percentage making it almost un readable. Sure I could search my photos and find a background that works better, but I shouldn't have to. Those are just a couple examples of the many stupid changes they made to the os that make it harder to use. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of improvements too, but not enough to overcome the downsides yet.

See my last post responding to your brother in poor spirit. I can't believe that I explained for about THREE times now that we are not discussing automatic UDPATES in this thread (except of one single case where somebody claimed this about his wife's iPhone), but wasted space on your iDevice because of the automatic installer package DOWNLOAD which can't be disabled, canceled or whatever. Why does this not reach your brain? Read this damn thread again ... Jesus.

It's not heaven on a 4. Slower, and not as pretty without all the translucency. Ditto with an ipad3! So all it's greatness is only supported on iPad 4 (a measly 6 months newer). It's white interface is meh. The app switcher is lame. Folders are lame. Notifications are messy. Control center is cool.

I have updated both my iPhone 4s and both are quicker. IOS7 is much nicer, but I do not like the slide to shutdown, that is just ugly.
I also agree needs to be translucent, my kids complain they cant adjust volume now while playing games because the adjusting volume just covers so much of the screen, before you could see through and continue playing.
I think overall it is a needed update, it is faster, but some things could have been done better. I like the fresh icons as well.

Its still better than my Motorola Android rubbish. I wish I could have got an iPhone as a company phone. I feel sorry for everyone that doesn't have a decent phone and all the Android lovers who promote crap like these cheap Android phones. I am sure the better higher quality ones are better, but since my experience with Android has been on a SLOW, with a 5 hour battery life brand new Moto, I hate Android even more! - be happy with the new IOS - it is far better than the competitions.

Great, but compare it to iOS 6. When I'm checking my e-mail on the go, seconds count, and I don't want to wait an extra one or two for all the sliding in and out that they decided to make the icons and apps do.

My memory is likely failing me here, but I was thinking that under iOS 6 I had an option under settings in which I selected "automatically download system updates" or something to that effect.

Is that the case here, or is Apple automatically pushing the update to people who have not selected auto downloading? If it's the latter, then it makes sense to question the practice! No company should automatically push unsolicited software to my device without notice.

Man up and install the update! What your still using Windows 95 because you don't like the looks of 98?

My old Thinkpad 760XL would be extremely slow and nearly useless if Windows 98SE had been automatically updated to Windows XP.

Some people use older devices, not everyone has enough disposable income to upgrade every year.

So why wouldn't you want it? It performs better than iOS 6 on the same hardware. My 3 year old iPhone 4 is like a brand new phone. Performance is better all around, especially activating the camera. That used to drive me NUTS in iOS 6! Sometimes it would take 10 seconds or more for the camera to become active. Now it's nearly instant in iOS 7.

Well, aren't you lucky? Everyone I know who's upgraded has seen their battery life cut in half or worse.

No kidding....especially those with 16GB devices.

How about 8GB? On a phone that's not eligible for a carrier-subsidized upgrade for another 9 months.

When I go to the "Update" screen in settings, it says "This update cannot be installed because it requires at least 3.1GB of storage" and prompts me to *delete* things from my phone to make room for the update. Yeah, right.

Sounds to me you're not too familiar with how computing devices work if you think this is an issue.

Enlighten me ... How do I disable the automatic installer package download on my iDevice (without the non-existent Jailbreak, of course) everybody here is complaining about? If you have the solution, there is no problem. Maybe you STILL don't understand the point of criticism? It's downloaded whether I intend to install iOS 7 or not!

Let me guess: You will now recommend the casual, non tech-savvy user to download a program to get access to the file structure of their iPhone/iPad and find the installer package file in its folder to delete it? (But if I think about it: Would a least be a thinking step forwards after claiming so long incorrectly that you understand what this is all about here and that all the others are idiots who pressed wrong buttons ...)

Windows 7 versus Windows 8 is a better comparison. MSFT is pushing 8, but a lot of people (including myself) are still on 7. With no plans to upgrade. I guess it's a good thing that they are greedy and want over $100 to get 8.

That being said, I think there are hits and misses with iOS 7. I upgraded my 5th gen touch and my 3rd gen iPad, and haven't really had any issues with either - the touch runs a lot faster now. But I chose to upgrade them.

I feel bad for a person with an 8gb or 16gb iPhone that had the download forced on them with no way to delete it.

IMHO, iPad 2 and iPhone 4 should have stayed on 6.
