I purchased my 4s less than 2 yrs. ago. It wasn't the latest iPhone but my needs were simple, I only needed to make calls, texting, and I needed Facetime so I could see my sons face that lives 1600 miles away more than twice a year. A few days ago we tried to FaceTime and of course it wouldn't connect. Then I found this thread.

I am not at all happy with Apples decision to do this because I knew it would slow down my phone. But I had to bite the bullet and upgrade anyway. This was my first iPhone and likely to be my last. Say what you will but Apple forcing upgrades onto its users making our devices slow is just bad business IMHO.

And before you all hate on me, remember it was my money that bought this phone. Apple slowed down my iPad 1 when iOS 5 came out. Shame on me for trusting them again. Good day.

Thanks for the legal advice, but you dont need a lawyer in the UK to deal with a situation like this. It would be handled by the Small Claims Court.

Fine then take them to small claims court. I personally think it's a waste of the courts time but whatever.

They shouldn't have included the iPhone 4 in iOS 7, it runs, but there is some noticeable slow down. It's not unusable, just really slow. The 4S should have been the cut off point.

Yeah and if they would have done that the planned obsolescence crowd would've been shouting from the rooftops. And the people that actually like iOS 7 or at least some of it's features would be complaining that they don't get them on their device (like people complained about Siri not being available on the iPhone 4).

So you bought a 3 year old phone less than 2 years ago and you are upset with apple for it being slow?

I don't care if people want to use old phones that is their business, but whining about Apple making your phone slow is just silly.

True. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Exactly. I do agree with you that the outright haters of iOS 7 are probably in a small minority. I'm sure Apple has those statistics and feel their time is better spent working on future OS releases.

I'm on 6.1.3, iPhone 4, refusing to upgrade to iOS7 because it's too slow and laggy on my hardware. I would love to have iOS7 but I'm afraid that it will become unusable.

It runs fine, when I updated my 4 it stayed the same speed, maybe slightly faster.

If it runs fine before updating to iOS 7 but slow with iOS 7 and now to get things back in working shape and to be secure (due to Apple's own fault) one would need to go to iOS 7, then how is Apple not to blame? People like you say that you shouldn't expect for things to be fast with the latest OS...fine, that's why various people stay on older OS where they perform better, but then Apple breaks stuff there due to their own problems and people are either forced to live with those issues or go to the newer OS that is worse for them that they were told they should stay away from because they shouldn't expect things to perform well there.

I have never noticed a slow down on any of my iOS devices from updating to the latest OS, my iPad 2 has no problems running ios7

And yet you mention that people shouldn't be surprised that their older devices would be slower at running it, meaning you acknowledge that's the case...yet then seem to deny it.

Yeah, looking back it was silly of me. As for whining, you got that one in the bag because at least I'm whining about something that effects me...you're just whining for the fun of it and there is really no reason for you to be trolling this thread. Good day to you again, I had my say.

I'm not acknowledging that iOS is causing slow devices I am saying that old hardware gets slow and people act shocked that their 3 year old phone isn't as fast as the newest stuff.

Old hardware with older OS on it doesn't really get slow. Old hardware with new OS on it can. now to fix an issue with old OS that Apple themselves introduced they are telling people to upgrade their OS when some people specifically would want to avoid it because it wouldn't perform as well, as you yourself seem to admit. So you can see the issue.

And here is where your complete misunderstanding of the situation shows. Old software runs perfectly fine on old hardware. It is forcing new software onto old hardware (with RAM very limited by Apple and no upgradeability) that bogs down the old hardware. IMHO Apple made a grave mistake by qualifying many of their devices for the next iOS. This works out OK for desktop computers because no one is being forced into the latest OS, RAM can be upgraded and you can always revert back if you don't like the experience. However, on the mobile devices it is not working out so well.

But they are still supporting for devices that aren't able to receive newer software. My point is the people that hate iOS 7 will never like it (or it's successors) so Apple could never support it long enough for them.

I guess it is really that hard for those fanboys to understand.

They hate it not only because it is fugly, but it makes it slow as (-beep-), drains the battery and have no significant features that warrant the update other than crippling their perfectly functional device that they paid for.

Bait and switch. Is it really that hard to understand?

Fine for you but all the tweaking that Apple allows does not make the thin fonts readable to me, as several others here have also said, so I'm not the only one.

That's funny, because with both settings maxed out the font is actually larger than it was on iOS.

You have a bad sense of design if you think that iOS 6, with its antiquated mismatched colors, looks nicer than iOS 7. Anyway, I don't have to deal with this problem very much since I upgraded to iOS 7 on my iOS device.

...see how that works?

Actually I don't give a damn about what you think or your opinion of someone else's opinion of design. Just making a point.

I don't get it. All you did was just make a false statement then curse.

All Apple has to do is keep the certificate updated for iOS 6. Look, the App Store's certificate is still valid on iOS 2, not that you can download very many apps. iOS 2 also has a working SSL. They're making people update, I guess so they can buy apps that don't work with iOS 6. EDIT: Or so Jony Ive doesn't lose his self-esteem when people don't update to his redesigned OS. :p

There are plenty of people (some who I know personally) that are running iOS 7 just fine on an older device. So Apple right now must re-engineer their iOS software update process to support what most likely is a small minority of iOS users? As I said before I'd rather the software engineers focus their time on what needs to be ready for WWDC. And if this small number of users are so upset then flood Tim Cook and Phil Schiller's email/Twitter accounts with complaints. Or get a lawyer and sue Apple.

Oh and I'll take the iOS 7 icons over this any day.

No, they just have to make the latest iOS 6 work on devices that can run iOS 7. That is, remove whatever checks to make sure the iPhone can't run iOS 7. They already updated it for those people using old iPhones that can only go up to iOS 6… who are definitely in the minority.

Which would you rather take? If you really think the music player in iOS 7 is better, I almost feel sorry for you. The iOS 6 music app was near perfection and of course Apple tried to fix something that obviously wasn't broken with the iOS 7 version.

It must get really tiring making fun of people for liking apple.

There are many things that apple has done that I don't like but yes I do tend to like apple as a company and for that I will not apologize.

Thanks for noticing.

I guess maybe I just don't understand the issue fully because I am a frequent phone upgrader. On my iPad 2 I don't notice any slow down from running iOS 7 but I have never had to deal with it on a phone.

I just want to point out that I can appreciate that some people are not happy with the way apple is handling the situation, but I can't help but feel like some people are making a bigger deal out of it than it needs to be. I can't imagine anyone enjoying using an iPhone 4 right now whether it had iOS 6 or iOS 7 on it.

You seem to imply there are now issues with upgrading and then in the same breath that there would be with older devices. The point is that older OS versions are better on older devices (as you admit and point out too essentially) and telling people to upgrade to fix something that Apple themselves broke in their older version (especially when Apple already fixed it in that version but doesn't allow those people to get the fix and is telling them to upgrade instead), that's not a good way of dealing with it. Big deal or not, it's not right or good nevertheless.

It must be nice that you know plenty of people that are running iOS 7 fine.
Guess what? I am being nagged on a bloody daily basis on how bad the battery life and how slow it is after changing to iOS7 on an iPhone owned by an immediate family member living in the same household.
At the same time, the very same family member has a piece of paper weight named iPad 2 with iOS 7. Could you even imagine the painful nagging?

They don't have to re-engineer their update process if it was not so anal to begin with, by forcing a download and eat up chunks of storage space when they know the new OS is not optimized with the legacy device in mind.

On a side note, please refrain from deviating from the topic. The FaceTime issue is due to the signed certificate had expired. It is not rocket science to fix that and Apple had decided to neglect instead.
Either update the certificate or let 6.1.6 get on all iOS 6 devices instead of forcing 7 onto everyone.

The last comment about the icons are just plain silly as they are your personal preference, unless you are going to prove that your preference weighs more than mine...

Tolerating failure is making the failure even worse than it is...

This is BS!!!!!!!! This is planed obsoletness at it's finest. I made the horrible mistake of upgrading my other iPhone 4 to ios 7 and litteraly made it so slow it was not worth using. IOS 6.1.3 was prefect god damn apple for this anti-consumer approach. I don't care if the iPhone 6 will be god's gift to mankind, I am going windows or android based phones....arrrrg
