I hope it does more than unlock the phone, and I hope it allows more than one person's prints to be registered.

I'd like to be able to use it instead of entering the App Store password, at least.

Seems this will be a iPhone 5 s hardware exclusive, so as to make people upgrade to the newest phone (as opposed to being a software feature).

Anyway I'm on an iPhone 4 so I'll be upgrading.

You can't turn code into a fingerprint sensor. There has to be existing hardware first to support the feature. And you're already getting more software features for free with iOS 7. Although the iPhone 4 is a good reason to upgrade.

That's certainly how many biometric fingerprint scanners work. The most common ones on the market can be defeated with a photocopy of a print on a piece of paper.

If you're in a TV show maybe but that's biooptics and not biometrics.

It isn't a camera - it doesn't read an image it takes a unique amount of data from the press. Pressure, depth of thumb (yep) can all be read from a fingerprint creating an ideal and unique identifier.

Just so you can turn off the function in settings. Call me cynical, but this seems like something that would probably be great on paper and go over gangbusters at the keynote, but be incredibly choppy in practical application.

...but then, this is Apple. Maybe it'll 'just work'. :p

And if you believe mythbusters, the most advanced ones can be defeated with a cheap flatbed scanner and some jelly :) They're deterents that are convenient to use, not an uncrackable defence.

Likely need a "live" print to work - much like capacitive screens need a "live" touch to register.

Really damn easy to fake. Most finger print scanners can be fooled by using a laser print of the finger print and your own finger for the rest of the biometrics (heat, pulse, etc).

Use it to select the user only. Then require a password. This could be the key to unlocking multiple user accounts. That would be more useful than using the finger print as a password.

That's what I was also wondering!

P.S. - Not to be a Grammar Nazi, but without proper punctuation in your signature, it reads as if Schiller is saying, his ass can't be innovated anymore :p

This is a ridiculous comment.

Wikipedia: "Biometrics (or biometric authentication) refers to the identification of humans by their characteristics or traits"

"Biooptics" isn't even a word.

Anything that reads a fingerprint is included in the definition of biometrics. The implementation details decide if it has weak or strong security, and the hack I mentioned has been demonstrated many times on the most commonly available scanners.

Everything you've said is complete hogwash.

How do you figure? There is no zero none zilch nada fingerprint detection hardware in any iPhone so far.

Sigh, everyone here is missing the important part:

The fingerprint sensor is being tied to the FFC for security. So, to make a payment or unlock your phone, you'll seemingly need to take a photo of the user while they have their thumb on the home button. This is far and away more secure than Android's "Face Unlock" feature and less taxing than remembering a PIN for payments.

I see some serious security feature with this.

Imagine the phone using your thumb print a key for phone access.

Should make the NSA happy ;-)

It'll be interesting to see how this impacts the rest of iOS and even other apple hardware. For a while my iPhone pass lock was time-limited because of that stupid "find my friends" requirement.
This tech would be really useful (assuming its as smooth as we'd expect) on an iPad or laptop that gets share among users.

Pretty sure it will stand for 'Scanner'.

Sh** they cut off my thumb!
