Exactly. Apple could be working toward this lineup in the fall:

iPhone 5S - $399 (64GB, A7, black/slate or white/aluminum)
iPhone 5S - $299 (32GB, A7, black/slate or white/aluminum)
iPhone 5S - $199 (16GB, A7, black/slate or white/aluminum)
iPhone 5C - $99 (16GB, A6, multiple color choices)
iPhone 5C - $0 (8GB, A6, black only)

iPad (5th gen) - starting at $499, A7X
iPad mini (2nd gen) - starting at $299, A6

Notes:

- The iPhone 5C internals would mostly be comprised of the previous year's high-end iPhone internals, minus key differentiators (fingerprint-sensing home button, improved camera, dual LED flash, etc.) The low-end "C" model would never get the fingerprint-sensor home button.

- The iPad mini would stay non-Retina until Retina screens are cost-effective. In other words, until Apple can equip the iPad mini with a Retina screen and still make a price point around $300 with a decent margin. But only if the Retina screen can also be efficient enough to allow for 1. a body shell as thin as or thinner than the 1st gen iPad mini (e.g. same-sized or smaller batteries), and 2. battery life as good as or better than the 1st gen iPad mini.

- iPad mini pricing could drop to $299. Should be easy to reduce next-gen iPad mini costs enough to maintain current margin at that price. And dropping below $300 might attract more buyers. Downside: will be hard to build the eventual Retina model and sell it profitably for $299.

- iPad mini wouldn't need the X variant of the ARM-based chip because it is non-Retina. This year: iPad mini (2nd gen) with A6. Next year: iPad mini (3rd gen) with A7. Or, if Apple advances their display technology enough, next year's iPad mini (3rd gen) could get a Retina screen plus A7X chip like the "big" iPad.

- Pricing in US Dollars, and iPhone pricing includes cell carrier subsidies.

How about iPad mini retina (2nd gen) - starting at $399, A6X (shrinker) ?

Why such a fuss about not announced tablet? We don't even know what other features will that iPad mini have.
Screen isn't everything, content is. I don't think schools and businesses care about the resolution, it is about getting things done in a simplistic and fast way.

We'll see what new features will the new iPad mini offer, then we can judge both devices

When everything you do will be on that screen, yes, screen is a deciding factor. Without good screen, even if you have the best content, you will still suffer.

Well, the current iPad Mini screen isn't bad, but still hurt my eye after long session of reading.

Since the iPhone 5S is 'rumoured' to have a fingerprint scanner, if the Mini 2 comes out with an A6, fingerprint scanner and is lighter (no retina), I will pull the trigger and purchase it. And I'm sure many others of you here will too.

If this is the case then... Hello Second Generation Nexus 7. Let's see how well you tie into my Apple Family.

These tiny incremental steps are going to kill Apple. Get ahead of the competition for a change. Most reviewers criticized the Mini when it was first released for not having a retina. Not having retina by it's second generation will be a non-starter

The thing is with the Nexus 7 and iPad mini, the Nexus 7 actually has nearly a million, that's MILLION pixels LESS than a hypothetical retina iPad mini.

If Apple were to keep the mini exactly the same it may not be possible to hit their 10 hour battery life etc.

1920x1200 doesn't sound much less than a retina mini so the near 1million pixel increase really made me stop and go 'woah, maybe it won't happen this year'.

I'm in the same boat as many others here. I have an iPad 3 and desperately want to jump to the Mini form factor, but was hoping to at least have parity on the display quality and performance.

Painful to think that they'll let it go for an additional 6 months before adding retina, especially in the face of increased competition with high resolution displays in the same form factor.

Eek. :(

thing is, if apple is able to pull out an ipad mini with retina display for around $300, they can also say goodbye to the $499 iPad sales.
The only way Apple can justify the $499 ipad (and its healthy margin) right now is by touting its retina display.

The same way it could justify the iPod video to exist in the presence of the ipod nano - a 30gb storage capacity.

the predicament lies in the fact that back then, there was no way one could put 30gb of storage in an ipod nano with a $249 price tag....now, there are ways to put a Retina Display in a 7" form factor, under $299.
Apple is in a spot of bother.

To people dissing the new Nexus 7, have you even used one extensively? I sold my iPad 2 to get a Nexus 7 and I couldn't be happier. The screen is awesome and my experience has been great. It is perfectly sized for me to take it everywhere. I am very happy with my Macbook Pro, iPhone 5, and Nexus 7 combo. At least try it out before dissing it like a regular fanboy would do.

The first nexus 7 sucked balls.

Currently have a new Nexus 7 in hand, and it is thin, light, has a retina display, and a long battery life. My iPad mini is a complete joke compared to this. According to the Apple enthusiast websites, such a device was IMPOSSIBLE to manufacture until the technology matured. LOLOL. And...it costs significantly less.

Apple prioritizes milking profits by leveraging its iTunes user base on obsolete products.

Can't wait to see the next lengthy 9to5mac article about how such technology is currently IMPOSSIBLE.

Don't get me wrong, I love Apple products and have many of them. However, lately it seems that Apple is not listening to its customers and instead of delivering what people want they are just dumping whatever they feel is good as an updated version. I have been waiting and waiting for a MBA with retina display and Apple keeps pushing the old and obsolete screen on us. Another option would be the MB with retina display but you get it with either the 5,400rpm old HD or extremely expensive SD that do not have the storage I want. Now the iPad mini. As many people mentioned even Kindle, Nexus, etc.. have better screens than the iPad Mini. Why is that Apple insists in launching an “updated” version of the device with the same crappy screen? I am ready to spend my money on new Apple products but won’t buy them just because Apple calls them “new”. I guess the innovation at Apple died with Steve Jobs. Wall St responded to that by blowing AAPL stock price but Mr. Cook seems to not listen to them.

The 13" rMBP is pretty much a MBA with retina display. Problem is with no GPU its no good. Maybe with the intel chips and HD5000, then we have something.

Volume plus battery life. Hard to overcome. You may remember iphone 4's screen was ahead. Thunderbolt was ahead. In cell touch was ahead. It is easy to put out a 550 pixel dpi if you only have to sell a few million a year. Much harder with 40 million and reasonable battery life.

Care to rephrase your battery life comment?

How apple will convince people buying this non-retina iPad mini whereas Google and all the Android concurrency will hammer home about the FullHD screen during the fall/winter sales period :/

I won't be buying an iPad Mini until it has a retina display.

Have you seen the mini running iOS 7 ? Looks much better than iOS 6.

which is either noticeably heavier and/or takes a >20% hit in battery life?

Samsung is on 28 nm this year with it's high end gadgets. Apple is on 32 right now and will probably shift to 28 too, and that will most likely increase battery life if they shrink the A6X that way from 123 mm^2, to 94 mm^2, that is less than A6 (97 mm^2) which is in the iPhone 5. I'm not an EE, it is just my opinion, I can be wrong. And attached display to the glass will provide more space for battery.

Even though I'm very disappointed, I'm not surprised if this were true. I personally don't feel that the iPad mini was ever anything more than a concession to the somewhat vocal buyer segment that wanted the Apple tablet experience in the seven-inch form factor. Maybe the retina mini would cannibalize the sales of the full-size iPad (I could argue that logic both ways) but that's immaterial. In a buying market that is at once increasingly competitive and economically restricted, I question how long Apple can effectively choose to play chicken with the consumer without it hurting its bottom line. We've seen the start of it in the recent iPad sales figures. Many buyers and prospective buyers want the more mobile form factor at the lower price point, and they have a strong competitor in the recent Nexus 7. In the case of your media consumption buyer, which if the recent report on app purchases is correct represents the bulk of activity within the App Store/iTunes ecosystem, all it would take is a budget-price repurchase program ("Already bought it on iTunes? Get it in the Google Play store for a dime!") to really take the wind out of Apple's sales. Just my thoughts.

Even better, buy something else! Not buying anything only shows Apple that no one's interested, period. Buying another tablet tells Apple, loud and clear, that the current iPad Mini isn't cutting it and the buying public is getting tired of waiting around for Apple to catch up.

^This!!!!!
I wish other people thought the same as you. But unfortunately people buy anything with an apple logo nowadays.
An example would be like when Microsoft did all these BS features on the xbox one And soon after changing after seeing how the PS4 was outselling them.

Hi Apple,

I know you got our interest at heart, but just for the sake of not listening to the ranting of the android fans , please make it a retina.

Thank you

PS - SERIOUSLY

They should replace iPad 2 with a mini. But they could drop the prices on the iPod touch, have a non retina mini at $299 (or $249 but I doubt they'd ever go that low) and a retina mini at $329.

If there's no retina mini this year than the 5th gen iPad better be amazing. We're not hearing much about it which is a bit of a surprise.

A spec increase + a lower price would be acceptable, but if they keep the price the same then this product is DOA IMHO.

Ordering a Nexus 7. I'll take the money saved and put it towards te next iPad mini with retina. There's no sense on waiting on Applle anymore. They are behind in so many areas and move like snails.
