Well the Nexus 7 out specs the mini in pretty all ways. Display, RAM, processor, graphics, storage (for the price), etc. The software is subjective. When it comes to mobile, Android wins hands down IMO.

The Nexus 7 display is very nice, but there is no contest between the App Store and Play store when it comes to tablet apps. There just isn't. "making progress" != already there.

Also, Apple offers actual support for their hardware. Real, honest-to-goodness, in-person support!

It's not about checklist specs with Apple. Never has been, never will be. It's always amazing how many people simply cannot understand this, even though it's been this way since 1976.

I waited and waited for the next iteration of the iPad mini and after some research, bit the Samsung bullet for the first time.

I do not mean to rationalize my purchase and I can be very objective about these matters, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is a marvelous purchase. It seems to be much more valuable in terms of usability (writing, reading, browsing, listening, sketching, sharing among others) than the iPad mini that I think won't be any different from my iPhone usage.

I believe if cared for well by Samsung, the Note 8.0 could be the benchmark all 7 and 8 inchers could be held to.

guess i will be waiting until march 2014 then. im not buying a non retina mini.

Just buy it and then sell it when the retina comes out and upgrade. I love my mini! Or you could get the google bezel 7 and have sweet specs if that's your thing.

Sure, I'd rather the mini was retina, but if it means thick, heavy, and fat bezels, no thanks. I'd rather the next mini has even less bezel and non retina than sacrifice the form factor to fit it in.

Even better, buy something else! Not buying anything only shows Apple that no one's interested, period. Buying another tablet tells Apple, loud and clear, that the current iPad Mini isn't cutting it and the buying public is getting tired of waiting around for Apple to catch up.

This is the only thing that will make a company as large as Apple sit up and listen. Sadly, most people these days do not understand this and proceed with the yelling trying to make themselves heard.

I've been eyeing a Kindle for awhile now to compliment my Prime subscription. Maybe a new Kindle is my future until the retina is released.

Also my guess would be from the rumors I've heard over the past few months is that Non-Retina for Fall and Retina in Spring.

It is sad. It is all about the economy of scales, I suppose. Apple sells how many minis each quarter? Asus doesn't have to produce as many Google Nexus 7, so they can go HD. Apple could produce a retina, but then it would be in smaller numbers, and it would always be sold out.

I think it sucks for Apple too; I don't think they don't want to give us a retina one. Look at what happened to the new iMac; Apple couldn't make enough of them because of shortage of the new laminated displays.

If that was the case, then Apple should price it even higher to take advantage of the demand and decreased supply?

How much would you pay above $329 for a Retina iPad Mini?

To people dissing the new Nexus 7, have you even used one extensively? I sold my iPad 2 to get a Nexus 7 and I couldn't be happier. The screen is awesome and my experience has been great. It is perfectly sized for me to take it everywhere. I am very happy with my Macbook Pro, iPhone 5, and Nexus 7 combo. At least try it out before dissing it like a regular fanboy would do.

I tried it, used it extensively for work for a time, and now never use mine. I still use the iPad 1 quite a bit. It came down to dumb things like home button being much easier to hit than a side button that I can't see, the benefits of a walled but bountiful garden of apps, and the interface being dead simple if quite aged (and soon to go from aged to weird).

Nexus, and Surface, have a lot of promise, and are cost effective to what you're getting (features list), but I just get a lot less use out of them than I do any Apple product, and I tend to notice bug more (there may not be more bugs, but I don't tolerate them like I do with Apple). I think this is where most Apple fans are. It's like being part of a dysfunctional but loving family. So yes, I'm basically saying that that Apple fans are emotionally unstable and incapable of having healthy relationships. If your Nexus is good to you, way to break the cycle.

To sum it up in an Annie Hall quote:

"Doc, uh, my brother's crazy; he thinks he's a chicken." And, uh, the doctor says, "Well, why don't you turn him in?" The guy says, "I would, but I need the eggs."

I'll buy it to replace my 2006 MacBook if there's Xcode and Eclipse or some other Java IDE on it. It's the only thing tying me to my MacBook because I really do NOT want to be stuck using school Dells for computer science. Retina would be nice, but I don't really care. Android isn't an option.

This is going to feel so wrong. Even after the font changes in b3, iOS 7 is clearly designed for Retina screens (thin lines on icons etc).

Why such a fuss about not announced tablet? We don't even know what other features will that iPad mini have.
Screen isn't everything, content is. I don't think schools and businesses care about the resolution, it is about getting things done in a simplistic and fast way.

We'll see what new features will the new iPad mini offer, then we can judge both devices

Screen isn't everything? It kind of is... For me.

Because I would be staring at that screen for years to come

I would rather have no iPad than spend money on some android crap. Someone gave me their Samsung Galaxy 2 (they obviously didn't use it) and it's the worst experience I've ever had on a computer. I'd rather use my iPhone 4 than use that piece of junk. It's good for Netflix and that's it.

Non-retina ipad mini is a deal killer for me. I'm upgrading my ipad 4 to the smaller, slimmer new 5.

I can't say I won't be disappointed if the next generation of iPad mini doesn't include a Retina display, but Apple will do what Apple wants in its own time. I love my iPad mini, such a good device, but it will mean waiting slightly longer before it becomes a great device i.e. with Retina display.

Hmm, well that is unfortunate if true, given the Nexus 7 is $229 with a high resolution display.

I have the new N7 and a Mini, both are great tablets, though the N7 seems more focused on content consumption while the iPad seems to be growing into its own computing platform.

My main complaint with the original N7 was the 16:10 form factor which was terrible for reading websites (Portrait mode required zoom, landscape required too much scrolling.) The new high res display fixes the portrait mode issue now, making it quite a capable tablet.

The biggest issue is still the app market, which iPad wins hands down. But if all you want is web, email, netflix and Kindle then the N7 is a perfect fit.

Excellent news for the stock to go down. Lets start the roller coaster stock price now.

I've got to say, I do like the look of the new generation of Nexus 7...it does look like a good device. But I prefer my complete Apple ecosystem. I like that I don't even have to think about my mail, contacts, notes and calendar. They just sync across my devices and they're right where I want them when I need them exactly as they were whenever and wherever I updated them. I had a GS1 back in the day and I hated it and I hated Android more, I understand it's come a long way since then but right now there's nothing pulling me towards Android.

You, and many others it seems, hold the mini in great esteem, and where the ecosystem is concerned I certainly agree. Apple's is the largest and most sanitary. However, most people seem to class tablets at media consumption devices, rather than a productivity devices, and rightly so. The quality of media being consumed is necessarily impacted by the quality of its display and that is where the mini is pitifully lagging behind.

How much would you pay above $329 for a Retina iPad Mini?

$20 which is about the estimated extra cost of a 7" retina screen vs non.

If there is no retina mini this round it might not be so bad. They'll still sell for the holidays, just not as many. The iPad 4 might do better than expected assuming Apple lightens it up to at least iPad 2 weight, and Apple has a big product for Easter/Mother & Father's Day, & graduation.

iPhone 5S - $399 (64GB, A7, black/slate or white/aluminum)
iPhone 5S - $299 (32GB, A7, black/slate or white/aluminum)
iPhone 5S - $199 (16GB, A7, black/slate or white/aluminum)
iPhone 5C - $99 (16GB, A6, multiple color choices)
iPhone 5C - $0 (8GB, A6, black only)

you can already get the "high end" iPhone for no less than 1€ here so i do not think a "iPhone 5C" would make much sense for the european market on a contract because like i said the high end already gets subsidized to 1€ on a fairly decent monthly plan.

Retina, Thinness, or Battery. You can only have 2 of the three

This quote is from iMore's Rene Ritchie. He seems pretty plugged into the apple universe and has said that right now they just can't get the retina battery where they want it and they will NOT do one with worse batter life or make it any thicker.

He says that apple does three things: thinness, battery life, retina screen. However, you can only have two of the three. You can't have retina and great batter life....as least not yet.

All comparisons to the new Nexus 7 are apples to oranges. It has a 16:9 screen and not nearly the number of pixels an iPad mini would have.

iOS 7 does not require @2 hook

That's a holdover from iOS 5 & 6.

I don't believe any new device introduced to run just 7 or later would require the @2 hook.

In other words, I don't think this information means what you think it means.
