Volume plus battery life. Hard to overcome. You may remember iphone 4's screen was ahead. Thunderbolt was ahead. In cell touch was ahead. It is easy to put out a 550 pixel dpi if you only have to sell a few million a year. Much harder with 40 million and reasonable battery life.

Care to rephrase your battery life comment?

Uhhh...no. I'll live without wifi on in the background, screen set at 75% brightness, while playing video. Here is a more realistic article:

So in other words, Apple wants the iPad 5 to have the spotlight this holiday season. You want a retina display and 128GB capacity, we have a new slimmed down iPad 5 for you that looks just like the mini's big brother.

If iOS 7 featured resolution independence (and unfortunately, forced developers to adopt resolution independence), then Apple could go with a high enough res display for the mini, such as 1600*1200.

I've got to say, I do like the look of the new generation of Nexus 7...it does look like a good device. But I prefer my complete Apple ecosystem. I like that I don't even have to think about my mail, contacts, notes and calendar. They just sync across my devices and they're right where I want them when I need them exactly as they were whenever and wherever I updated them. I had a GS1 back in the day and I hated it and I hated Android more, I understand it's come a long way since then but right now there's nothing pulling me towards Android.

Do you really believe Android users don't enjoy syncing of email, contacts, calendar, notes, and EVEN music through Google services?

Wow, I've been living in the dark ages all these years!

Isn't it possible that the iPad 2 goes away and we get two mini's - a cheaper one without retina and one with retina? If the low cost iPhone rumors are correct Apple won't be selling any iPhones with 30 pin connectors. I'd assume they want to get away from that on the iPad too.

I have been thinking along this line too.

Maybe when they come out with next iPad Mini and the old one will sell $229 or maybe as low as $199.

2 iPad mini

Ipad mini (non retina A6) - $229
IPad mini (retina) - $329

Apple will phase out A5 so that the A6 will become super cheap to make (economies of scale) A $229 ipad will sell like hot cakes and so will the A6 rumored low cost iPhone 5C.
Apple made the A5 dirt cheap to manufacture by putting it in the mini last year, this year is no different but with an A6.

The retina will still be popular but since the screen yield issues it will not be the only mini.

Think of the ipad mini retina as the step between non-retina ipad mini and full sized retina ipad.

See if I am right in a couple months!

Something like the AppleTV with AirPlay has been holding me back from even thinking about the Android ecosystem. Now that the Nexus 7 has a high res display and Chromecast is announced and out I'm fairly interested. I simply won't buy any devices with low PPI displays; "zee goggles, zay do nothing!"

The only real issue is lag. I don't care what Android users say, I have yet to see an Android device that doesn't lag (I haven't used the new 7 in person). Once you're used to high priority scrolling anything less is annoying.

Android is going to be more laggy than iOS. But this time, they have thrown some serious hardware (quad-core CPU, high-end GPU, 2GB RAM) at the Nexus 7 and the lag is gone. Wait till you use it, I was totally surprised. It is the only Android tablet that I've seen that has almost completely removed lag.

The only thing left is design. The N7 isn't as nice looking as the Mini or with the same materials. But that screen on the N7 is incredible.

Yes because Apple will pixel-double the Mini like with all retina devices previously. Same number of pixels as iPad 3/4 in smaller form factor = higher PPI.

If they do that, then the iPad will only have its size to get sales. It certainly wouldn't have a better screen. They would essentially be crippling their own market, eating their own sales. Right now, the iPad Mini is something that doesn't steal a huge amount of sales because the screen is better.

That's really excellent to hear.

I have yet to buy an iPad because 1) the price is still too high 2) I already use my iPhone all the time. I really only want a tablet device for it's larger screen and more relaxed web browsing in my downtime.

Thanks for taking the time to tell me your opinion. I really appreciate it.

Doubt it. They may go for resolution independence in iOS7 (and there are hints to that in the UI) but with the boatload of ipad retina enabled apps already available, it makes more sense to have the Mini run those apps natively with the same resolution as the 3/4 then to have them downscale to a lower res.

In the short term, resolution independence will benefit iPhone more as it can mean introducing iPhones with multiple screen sizes. I doubt Apple will be introducing any other screen sizes for iPad aside from the Mini and normal iPad so resolution independence isn't necessary for now.

Maybe later it'll be necessary to implement res independence on iPad if they want to bump the res even higher but cannot pixel-double as easily as they did previously.

If Apple is going to replace iPad 2, why not just replace with a iPad Mini. iPad Mini serves low end entry level tablet for Apple. Then put iPad 5 as large 10 inch table, and use iPad Mini as low end, thin and light iPad. Isn't that simplified product line a lot more?

I would have no problem with Apple doing that as long as they lower the price on the iPad mini. A non-retina iPad mini starting @ $329 is not price competitive in 2013

I just bought a second Mini last week. The "I'm Not Buying" (based on a rumor!) crowd sounds like 12 yr old children. Have any of you ever worked in, or owned a retail business? I brought up Trek bikes earlier today, and I'll say it again. The typical customer wants a particular name brand, and will pay a premium to get it. Go out and survey 25 random people, and ask them what they think of the new Nexus 7 tablet. My guess would be they've never heard of Nexus, nor their new tablet. I KNOW they've head of Apple, and probably Samsung because of their phones. Trek provides financing for their dealers, inspects the dealers' showrooms (bike shops are looking much better as a result), provides salesmen with product information training, etc. They aren't the very best bikes unless you spend $4,000, but they will provide you with the best customer service experience in the industry. Apple does the the same, and I like it.

Holding your breath until retina Minis arrive won't get them here any faster, and isn't healthy. Apple will sell more Mini's than its nearest competitor (Samsung), and you'll get everything you want on Apple's schedule. Let's say there are 10,000 members on this site, and tens of millions current and future Apple customers. Who do you think Apple is concerned with? So stay calm, and breath normally. This is all based on a rumor....

P.S. Wanting more for less is wishful thinking. As I mentioned above, Trek has been quite successful at giving customers less for more, and they've been doing it for 20 years. Starbucks can sell a cup of coffee for $4, and to me that's a joke, but they've made a fortune.

I suspect they might try to "compensate" for the lack of retina display with a price drop, perhaps to $299. Maybe they add the rumored fingerprint scanner from the iphone 5s and that, combined with a cpu bump and a price drop might enough to get people to bite. As for me, I'll be upgrading my iPad 3 to the new iPad assuming they redesign it look like the mini. When the retina mini is ready, I'll consider it then.

I have a full sized 3rd gen iPad, but really want a more portable tablet. If this is true, I'll buy an LTE enabled Nexus 7 ASAP!

Solution is simple ...

If Apple didn't plan to include a Retina display in the next iPad mini then it's best they stop the presses now and backtrack. Delay the mini launch if need be until they can include a Retina display. Google one-up'd Apple and Apple can solve the problem because they haven't launched the new mini yet. Who cares if they have inventory or packaging or whatever already made ... with a 150 BILLION in cash they can fix it.

Apple says they make the very best they can for the consumer ... they make great stuff and I'm a fan ... but ... their motto really should be we make the very best we can for the consumer SECOND to ensuring we have insanely high profit margins. If Apple isn't introducing a Retina display in the next iPad mini that's a good example of taking profit over pleasing the consumer.

And, that's a fine line to walk on Apple's behalf ... if they are going to cheap out by not including a Retina display in the mini they're going to loose lots of sales to the Nexus with the better display, (and price). Apple would of been wiser to focus less on profit margin per unit and instead go with a Retina display and enjoy the exploding sales because of it....

What hints? I mean, as an illustrator who basically lives in Adobe Illustrator, I'd love for that to be true — it'd mean I actually have a marketable skill for the first time in my life — but I haven't seen much of it.

You can't use SVG natively, so you're tied to raster images = resolution dependence, end of story.

Ditching images for text buttons and simplifying the icons (to be redone as SVG in a future version) are steps towards resolution independence, but it ain't happening in iOS7. No chance.
