No need to be condescending. Mine has no performance issues. Animations are as smooth as iOS 6. Some animations are slower than iOS 6, but that's by design, but they're smooth all the same.

I wasn't being condescending, although if you wish to see an example of such I'd suggest looking at your original comment aimed at myself. There is nothing wrong with my iPad and I am vastly experienced in the installation and maintenance of iOS devices and Macs.

This isn't about the speed of the transitions, I am well aware they are the same across all devices. The majority of the transitions on iOS 7 on iPad 4 are smooth as butter but there are some instances, which I and others have highlighted, which are not.

And again, on iOS 6 the same animation was shown whether you used the home button or four finger pinched to go home. On iOS 7 using the button results in the stock animation which is fine, but the gesture results in a messy, two paced, inconsistent mess which ends too quickly (as shown in my video).

Then I can't understand how apple let this one slip through. 10s to change a wallpaper ... Geez.

Maybe they will improve it once ipad 5 is launched?

:(

Regarding the time taken to change a wallpaper, I have had this explained to me by a developer.

"Parallax (and a few image filters) is always pre-computed on the wallpaper you’re setting. You can’t disable it. Reduce motion doesn’t remove it. Parallax is always pre-computed, otherwise it’d take several seconds to re-enable it. The Parallax effect is disabled, but like I said you can re-enable it instantly. So the pre-comp is done either way".

Well it's good to know why it's taking so long. But my only question is why not then let the "reduce motion" take the hit for the waiting. What are people more likely to do, change wallpaper or toggle motion on or off on a regular basis? Still seems like a sloppy decision to include the pre render in wallpaper rather than the toggle for reduce motion. Since he said it could have been. Hmmmm

old ipad 2 here. generally the performance is fine, though it is riddled with obvious bugs as noted in this thread. pinch to close and closing apps in mutitasking being the biggest.

i can imagine a point release for ipads coming very soon after the 18th

Exactly my thought. Basically, from what this developer told me, Apple would rather that parallax was able to be immediately switched on/off ... or at least give the illusion of such.

All 'Reduce Motion' does is exactly that, it reduces it. The device is still doing the work in the background just in case you decide to use parallax again. It does seem like a waste of CPU/GPU to have it doing something behind the scenes when someone doesn't want it.

I don't use Parallax, I think it's too gimmicky and is 'cool' for about the first ten seconds. I'd like to be able to completely turn it off (ie: turn all computations working on parallax off), not just disable the motion effect.

I got hold of a preowned Mini at BB. I will install iOS 7 ASAP and report back. Probably not today cause of too much baseball, golf, and football! :)

W..

Same problem here, IPAD 3gen-retina, landscape switch animations are laggy , keyboard problems, and all bugs listed on this threat, i can´t even change the wallpaper.. bummer

Dad´s IPAD4 same issues..

Runs smoothly on my 4S..

Fix/workaround!

If you turn off iCloud documents and data syncing (Settings -> iCloud -> Documents & Data), that should fix it. Solved all the keyboard/lag issues on my 3rd gen iPad running the public release of iOS 7.

I have the GM with a fresh install on my iPad 3 and the entire OS is sluggish and slow. It takes roughly ~12 seconds to pop a thumbnail up to set a wallpaper and ~8 to ~10 seconds to actually set it.

As well, orientation rotation animations are janky and drop frames; keyboard input is terrible too.

I'm not sure how this passed Apple performance testing and quality control.

I'm having the exact same delays with picking and setting wallpaper on my iPad 3. In addition, there's an overall general lag in just about everything. Selecting options in settings, typing text, etc etc. The general lag is minor, but it gives the iPad this disconnected feel. It's just not as responsive as iOS 5 or iOS 6.

I didn't have a previous beta of iOS 7 on the iPad. I went straight from iOS 6 to iOS 7 public release.

This is the first time I've had any issues with an iOS upgrade and I've used every one since 2007! VERY disappointed with Apple!

SHOCK! HORROR! Apple cripples older devices so you upgrade! never seen that before ever..............

It would be nice if people could comment on other aspects of iPad's performance with iOS7 - other than wallpaper selection. This is clearly a bug, but about everything else?

Personally I had no other issues on my iPad 4 - only the bloody slow wallpaper selection.

Just upgraded my iPad to disappointment. First bug spotted was the wallpaper selection. However, from the very first screen everything just feels a little slower than it used to.

Performance issues I've noted so far:-

  • Wallpaper Selection
  • Switch to numbers on the keyboard is sometimes slow
  • Return to home screen is slow/jumpy

Other issues, more to do with functionality:-
  • Safari interface is disappointing compared to iPhone, missing many of the new features. New tab button didn't need moving, and is now less intuitive.
  • Folders are now a massive waste of screen space on the iPad, only 3 apps per row and only 3 rows!? Many folders now page when they didn't need to before. Terrible UI/UX decision, hope this gets fixed.
  • Five finger swipe up for app switching no longer matches up with the animation, feels very "disconnected".

Very disappointed to see my current generation iPad struggle in this way really. It would also be massively disappointing if Apple were as it seems designing an OS for a generation of the iPad (5th) that hasn't even been announced let alone released.

The look and feel of the OS aren't too bad if you set aside the performance issues, some elements feel a little too basic and unintuitive now. The fine outline style icons are a little harder on the eye as well, but again I can live with it.

Overall, with the great variety of Android tablets over the last 12 months and the prices coming down, I can definitely see myself making the switch when I decide my iPad is no longer up to scratch. I just get the feeling Android are moving ahead with tablet orientated features.

Except these issues exist on current generation devices... if they are "crippling" current generation device in anticipation of releasing the next generation, that hasn't even been announced, then that's a pretty poor way to treat customers. If I did find that to be the case, I would personally be requesting a return and refund from Apple.

Couldn't agree more. iOS 7 doesn't work well on the current iPads, even when using Apple apps.

Another bug:-

Tap the search bar in your email inbox, then tap the body of the email and the keyboard drops down, but you get stuck in the search box. You can't select any emails until you press cancel on the search.

And another bug:-
It's not obvious whether shift is "on" or not. Used to be blue, now it just fills in the arrow, I didn't realise the first few times it was actually on. This is a bug in my opinion.

creating tabs in safari

Try creating tabs in safari, mine just crashes and i cannot open links in new tabs...

Don't people think before posting anymore? This makes zero sense unless you are suggesting that Apple put code into iOS 7 to hijack older devices to reduce clock speed. But that notion itself is ludicrous.

What Apple does do is design OSes to the newest, best models rather than older ones. That's how progress works; not buy designing to the least common denominator. Usually that means a feature or more on older models won't be perfect or even available.

What Apple (and just about every consumer products company on the planet) does also does is make various models ranging from basic but usable to more than you'll really need, but more enjoyable to use.

What Apple (and just about every consumer products company on the planet) also does is not make certain features on older models available even if they are capable, just to add more differentiation between old and new.

Ultimately it's up to the individual consumer to decide whether it makes sense to upgrade or not. So whatever marketing gimmicks Apple does bottom line is the consume has final say. But it's false and slander to say Apple intentionally and secretly clocks down existing older hardware via each new OS.

sorry but been burned by apples updates before so making them more enjoyable to use is not entirely true

This feeling of lag or delay is really quite annoying. My iPad now feels like a cheap Android tablet. Anyone that knows me knows how difficult it is for me to say that about an Apple product.

I turned on 'Reduce Motion' in Settings/General/Accessibility. That seemed to help a little bit, but certainly didn't eliminate all of the lag. Selecting/changing Wallpaper is where the lag is most noticeable. At times, it feels like the iPad has locked up.

Side note: When confirming a Wallpaper for final selection, you tap either
"Set Lock Screen", "Set Home Screen" or "Set Both" at the bottom of the screen. There's also a "Cancel" option. When you touch one of those options, not only is there a lag between the moment you touch it and the moment when the iPad confirms that you touched one when switching screens, there is no visual confirmation that you actually touched the selection. The text doesn't change color or in any other way acknowledge that you touched it. And, because of the lag before anything happens, until something happens, it feels like the iPad has frozen up. But no, you just have to keep waiting (and waiting and waiting) and the iPad finally responds. Really quite annoying.

I'm thinking about going back to iOS 5 or 6.

All in all I'm really loving IOS 7 on my iPad 4 and my iPhone 5 but there's definitely a lag on both. I can see lots of stuttering in the animation when opening and closing apps, in Safari and delays in simple things like just changing the wallpaper. But the positives outweigh the negatives in my opinion and my guess is that updates that Apple's already working on are going to go a long way in smoothing things out ..... at least I hope.

Does this fix the issue for any of you?

I should also report that with iOS 7.0.3, I turned iCloud Documents & Data back on and there's no more lag on my 3rd-gen iPad.
