Correct me if I am wrong, but if you have spotlight enabled sometimes after an update it will reindex...giving some users the issues with slowness at least for a little while after updating? I have spotlight turned off...all system location services turned off (except Find My iPhone) and I never have any issues with updates for the most part. *Knock on wood*

IIRC, indexing occurs irrespective if you have spotlight enabled (or anything else for that matter).
This is usually why, after an update the battery life has dropped until the device has had a full charge again.
The more apps there are on the device, the longer it takes to index therefore using more battery life.

I'm 100% positive that 8.1.3 is more of a battery hog than 8.1.2, which itself drained more quickly than 8.1.1
I really wish that Apple could make a less buggy build of 8.1.1 because I got stupendous battery life with that one.#

I'm typing this on a 6+ with a clean install of 8.1.3
I have changed my settings to how they were but downloaded nothing. I haven't even moved the stock apps, everything is like out of the box and it's performing no better than it did with an OTA upgrade on top of an iCloud backup. Most disappointing.
One of the things I loved best about the 6+ was the battery life and I don't call scraping 10 hours of usage especially amazing. I got over 9 hours when my iPhone 5 was brand new out of the box.

The qualification there is that it might apply to some people only, as is often the case with things of this nature and pretty much any update.

Not sure if its the new 8.1.3 update or the new 12.1 iTunes, but after updating OTA and syncing my 64gb iPhone 6 to my computer I've noticed that my "other space" has been reduced from 1.85gb to 1.69.

Surely a completely clean install with no apps or email accounts added, on a phone with previously stellar (8.1.1) battery life is fairly conclusive evidence?

We're not talking a huge 50% cut in battery life. Lots of guys here have their battery percentage meter switched off, and by their own admission don't obsess over battery life, so would they really notice when an iOS update robs them of half an hour to an hour? That's what 8.1.2 and 8.1.3 did for me, the end result being that I'm 1.5 to 2 hours down on what I used to consistently achieve with 8.1.1

Evidence, but just isn't something that everyone/most experience, even if some do.

I have seen an amazing increase in battery life with 8.1.3 compared to 8.1.1. I skipped 8.1.2 because I didn't feel like using the bandwidth to download so soon after 8.1.1.

I never do OTA updates though. I follow the practice I learned with OS X. With OS X I learned that the Combo update (cumulative updates) were less problematic than the Delta update (recent changes only). I apply this same logic to the iPhone, and have never had a problem.

One thing I always do as an extra precaution, is make sure my phone is 100% charged before connecting to iTunes for an update. This may not accomplish anything. But my reasoning is just that it gives the new OS a fresh start on a full battery.

The only time I didn't follow this procedure was when I installed 8.1.1. And I did see a noticeable decrease in battery life compared to 8.1. But that could be pure coincidence.

Aside from 8.1.1, I've observed stellar battery life from all iOS versions from 6.x to the current 8.1.3 on my iPhone 5.

I always finish out the day with at least 70 to 80 percent remaining charge, no matter how much I use the phone. I've even spent days without recharging the phone and never had it die. Out in remote locations, I've gone 4 days or so with no charging and been fine. Though admittedly in remote locations there's not a strong enough signal to be browsing the Internet (at least not productively). But either way, I've never seen my phone with less than 50% charge remaining.

And my daily use of the phone is pretty high. It's my primary means of phone communication, research / Internet, emailing, etc. It's almost completely eliminated my need to use computers.

I also skipped 8.12 and updated from 8.1.1 then to 8.1.3, much better battery life on my 4s after two battery cycles. :D

Great practice and routine to do, I recommend this method as I have more or less done this in the past without issues (between 100% and 80% battery via iTunes).

As far as OTA updates are concerned, I'll never be using that method again after 8.1 to 8.1.1 OTA issues screwed up my phone..lesson learnt!

They fixed most of the UI stutter and lag that mainly got introduced with 8.1.2, at least on the new devices. My iPadAir 2 and iPhones 6 are very smooth again with no stutter. Same applies to safari where they fixed the lag when switching tabs, especially in landscape.
The reduced storage for updates is very nice. My friend yesterday updated from 7.1.2 to 8.1.3 and he only needed 1.8 GB free storage. Before he have needed about 5GB to install which is a huge difference.

I didnt have any significant increase in lag from 8.1.1 to 8.1.2 to be fixed in 8.1.3. A lot people here are way to fast to have a problem then accuse ALL similar iOS devices of having the same problem.

Thats why I said they only fixed the things that were addressed in the release notes. Apple is generally pretty good about including every single non security related improvement in their release notes. They will even admit to fixing a problem induced by a previous update, like we saw with cell reception issue with 8.0.1 that was pulled and fixed with 8.0.2 and release note clearly stating such.

I feel many issues people have can be chalked up to an isolated problem related to those individuals devices. So when something is fix from an update what actually happened is a bug in there software was overwritten.

Yeah I was just adding to your comment not necessarily saying you were wrong. I had stutter/delays every so often during UI navigatin on both my iPhone 6 and iPad air 2 since I believe 8.1.2. Maybe this was a isolated problem but 8.1.3 has fixed it and made my devices run buttery smooth again.
In regards to Safari the lag when switching/swipe to delete tabs (in tab mode) is also fixed with 8.1.3 and this was there since 8.0.

Any solution 4 activation phone number in imessage and facetime?! Doesnt work in 8.1.3 ?! I have multiple device on same apple id, i m writing from europe

I have two iPhones and two iPads on the same Apple ID. I have been having off and on spontaneous deactivation and reactivation issues with iMessage and FaceTime since iOS 8.0. I had it in 8.1 and 8.1.1. I did not see it in 8.1.2 but I ran 8.1.2 for only about a week. Have not see it in 8.1.3, at least not yet. It seems to activate and deactivate spontaneously. I have not figured out a solution but because it seems to reactivate, I haven't spent a lot of time pursuing it.

I can choose only mails, but i m not sure is it working corectly...a lot of money spent on international sms for activation, but there always stay " waiting for activation " ...

2/1/15 and still no notification on the Settings icon that there's a software update. Anyone else have this issue? Could the update fix that?

My iPhone never told me there was an update…..:roll eyes:

Only when I went to iTunes did I see it. I have been busy, so I wasn't connecting to iTunes as often, but why didn't I get the update notification on the Settings icon?

Does anyone know if this fixes the issue with texting? Where it freezes up and blacks out going from vertical to landscape….

My 6 is buggy with a lot of things. Not happy with it lately

Even when you go to settings/general/software update and then click to check if there is an update, still nothing?

Yes, the update is there under General>Software Update, but the Settings icon always showed a notification for any updates up until this one. It's just another issue that solidifies that my phone has all sorts of issues

Deactivate the iMessage and tune it back on. It will ask to send a message to activate. Let it. It should solve your purpose.

No, my moms phone has the same problem for some reason. It usually is rather quick to show that annoying badge next to the settings app but this time it never did. I even went in and looked at the "Software Update" screen in settings. Yes there was an update, but when I left there was no badge. Haven't ever seen this before.

Updated my iphone 5s this weekend to ios 8.1.3 from 7.1.2 and must say I am most disappointed. Definitely not on par with 7.1.2.

With record Q1 earnings one must question why this may be? The Q1 stats clearly show the demand and interest in the iphone, a premium handset, but why no premium software to support the device?

I guess all one can do is hope in anticipation that future releases only improve on what is currently not an up to scratch ios release......

Currently on 8.1.1 on my replacement iPhone 6 and the battery is great, back to how it should be.

Not sure whether to risk updating to 8.1.3 and the battery drain start once again.

May just sit pretty on my current OS

How much usage and standby time do you have at the end of the day when you are still at 70 - 80%?

I could be off on this I believe the badge shows up when the phone has already automatically downloaded the update on its own in the background.
