Nice idea, but it can be difficult to implement in practice. E.g. if you need to re-install the OS, stiff crap, you'll have to put on the latest one. Also, many apps in the store don't work on older versions of iOS.

Another example is Facetime. For me, Apple has broken Facetime - short of updating to iOS 7 - as the current iOS 5 version no longer works. If I could get iOS 6, that'd be fine. But of course I can't.

Don't get me wrong: I absolutely agree with you about not updating to new (slower) versions of the OS, but your claim that things will work "for many years" is perhaps questionable...

Cheers, A.

Ah yes, that is true. I guess I should clarify, many core functions (FaceTime being an exception) will continue to function. I guess it just hasn't bothered me much since I only use a few apps but yea it does get really irritating not being able to reinstall or wipe if necessary.

I'm still so utterly enamored that I get the same battery life on my jailbroken 5 that I did when it was brand new accounting for near-perfect scaling of degrading battery longevity.

looks about right, after updating my iPhone 5 and experiencing all the issues/bugs I told my with not to update her 5S cause I ain't about to be her personal Apple Genius for the next month.

Bad move, dude. If you won't be her personal Apple Genius, some other guy will be happy to fill in for you. ;)

Too many small problems with IOS 8 next time I'll wait for a couple of months. iCloud and Apple TV bluetooth are both having problems. iPad Air is slow on Wifi were is my iPad 4 is faster than the Air loading. My 5s battery is better using IOS 8

Apple needs to do small updates each year not these complete changes as it will not be long and they will be as bad as Microsoft.

Anybody else having problems with the Music (iPod) functions on iOS 8.0.2? The music player seems to get confused about where it left off in a track. When you resume playback the display shows playing one thing while the audio is clearly from a completely different position or track.

I've never been happy with playing long tracks anyway. It's too difficult to seek within long track.

Also, at least for 8 GB and 16 GB models, I really wish Apple would slim down their iOS loads. They've got a cloud, so why not use it? Over Wi-Fi at least. Put the icons on screen if you must, but put the apps themselves in the iCloud. Some of us will never use iBooks, for example -- especially on an iPhone or iPod touch. Stick to a few wallpapers and put the extras in iCloud, too. Use the same technique to bring app parity to the iPad. Why on earth doesn't the iPad have a freakin' calculator, for example?

So out of 6 people closest to me, including myself, a total of 1 upgrade. If they had enough space, all 6 of us would be updated. Might be time to rethink a 16gb device being the base model.

What makes you think that they would have space if they had a bigger model ? Most people fill up the space that's available and have to delete stuff to make room for the huge updates when they load it over the air.

I just load updates through iTunes on the computer to avoid the space issues and because it's much faster.

Funny, me a "troll noob"? Right. Remember the first Macintosh? I had one. Maybe you weren't born yet. In any case, there is no excuse for issues such as landscape mode issues, the fact that I can't enable the camera from the lock screen by sliding up the camera symbol, and many more. I'm not the only one. It's inexcusable.

Sorry about that then.

I'm with you in terms of frustration over iOS 8... but someone who has been around Apple as long as you claim typically doesn't make some of the silly statements you were making. Pay so much more? Android? Seriously?

Certainly born, but couldn't afford the original Mac. My first was an II LC but I was using them long before that. My best friend had one of the first hundred (I'm pretty sure, if memory serves) Mac II's.

No surprise

I regret daily having upgraded my 4S to iOS6, yet alone 7. No way am I going to 8!

The public remembers failure longer than success - certainly the apple haters. Apple Maps, "Bendy" phones, buggy software (like losing cellular functionality in 8.0.1 AND 8.0.2) have all been widely publicised - with minimal publicity given to similar failures (if they happen) at Android/Windows. Like it or not, Apple gets bad press much more easily, so obviously people are shying away from the 'update' button!

Yea, Tim just can't quite pull off the RDF like Job, huh? That said, I think Apple does have a strong product pipeline, just like they have for many years now. The iPhone 6 hardware is impressive as ever, and there is nothing wrong with any of their other products. They don't always need some new big thing, as they are doing just fine. (re: 1GB RAM... look for the speed comparison article that was around the other day showing how the iPhone 6 blew away the others with 2 GB RAM).

However, Apple has typically had issues with software releases, so while a pain, this isn't all that new. Usually it was more with buggy new features or new apps that didn't include core features, etc. The level of problems here is certainly a troubling development, though, I admit. It just isn't all THAT unexpected given Apple's history... just magnified.

re: Windows - Oh my, you'd better rethink that a bit first. I think you'll come running back to Apple. I have Windows 8 on my iMac in Bootcamp and Parallels for testing and a bit of gaming, and it's an incredible pain in many ways. Every time I use it, I think... how can people actually work in this every day? Way better than it used to be, but still pretty nasty IMO. (I've been using Windows since somewhere around 3.x.)

re: iWatch - IMO, nothing much interesting there. I'm curious, what use would you have for one? I admit it's very impressive hardware and UI advancement, but where is the market for such a thing? I think it's going to be successful WITHIN a fairly small market segment it is targeting.

Agree 90%, but iOS 8 in my experience on a 4S is the most bug infested heap from Apple that I've ever used, and that includes both classic Mac OS and OS X. Some of the "bugs" are actually GUI design flaws that no sane designer would leave in release software.

What I find most frustrating about iOS 8 is the way it only misses it by that much (holds fingers close together). If it were only more refined it could be a landmark release. The new Mac integration features are welcome despite being unusable on any of my personal Macs, and I'm liking Apple's widget implementation more and more as I use it. I also appreciate the new APIs and programming tools for developers which are sure to bring even better apps to iOS. If only Apple had waited until iOS 8 was out of beta to release it...

honestly wish i was still on 6. 7 was okay but iOS 8 has had nothing but problems for me and many others. Unacceptable and very unlike apple for this to happen.
It's happened before, maybe not as bad, but it's happened. My iPad Air on 8.02 is like watching grass grow. My iPad 2 on 7 is much faster so I'm using that a lot more now.
If the next update doesn't fix it I'm getting rid of it and going back to Android, which I've got on my phone anyway.

iPhone 6 running iOS 8.0.2 with Bluetooth I get no notice that my phone is ringing nor any alert when a text arrives.

Mobile Safari gets stuck in portrait mode and won't rotate (yes, with rotation lock off) but rotation works just fine in Messages.

Some websites won't resize, anything rendered to the right of the current view is inaccessible.

I'll upgrade my iOS 7 devices after they get the worst off the iOS 8 bugs resolved, but not before. However long that takes.

ios8 really slowed down my Ipad 2. Pretty bad. I too will wait longer next time or think twice.

Previous Apple updates always made my Ipad 2 better. HOpefully ios 8 will get to that pt.

You don't get out much, seriously? Windows doesn't get bad press, it gets nothing BUT bad press. Even if Microsoft were to give everyone $100 per day for the rest of their lives, it'd be somehow made to look bad.

At least you've got an older machine, my iPad Air on 8 runs slower than my iPad 2 on IOS7.
Next time I'm waiting 2 years.

To be honest, my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1 is fantastic. I forgot i am running a beta version until reading some of the comments. Pretty solid build.

Don't forget all the excluded iPhone 4 users which is still probably a huge chunk, including myself until Wednesday when my 6+ arrives.

Seriously, just delete your music off the phone, update, and put the music back, not a big deal, or do it with iTunes.

Old phones won't update, jailbreakers may not update, and people who have seen issues with the iOS 8.0.1, bluetooth and so on.

Well yeah, two things. Its release feels buggy like it's still a beta and speaking of beta when I was using the beta it was the first time I was actually put off, I actually reverted to iOS 7 because iOS 8 was that buggy.

It clearly wasn't ready for prime time and it shows via statistics, the consumer isn't dumb and to be frank I think the hold up while it was in beta testing was part of the cause.

What would you consider the Mac Mini or MBP needing to blow you away?

A GPU that doesn't suck. Apple "updated" the MBP and retained the Geforce 750M which is lame and the Mac Mini is still saddled with Intel HD4000 graphics. Kind of lackluster...I have better uses for my money than to purchase 2 year old hardware.

re: Windows - Oh my, you'd better rethink that a bit first. I think you'll come running back to Apple.
I use Windows 7 on my wife's laptop and it's perfectly fine. I also use Windows 8 on my MacPro via Parallels and it's great (I use Start8). Windows 10 seems more like Windows 7 so the future is fine for Windows. I just feel like Apple is lost right now and had no vision although OSX is still better and better than Windows, Windows hardware is MUCH better and cheaper than Apple hardware so I'm swayed towards Windows and will adapt to the slightly less impressive OS.

re: iWatch - IMO, nothing much interesting there. I'm curious, what use would you have for one?
Not sure I'd buy an iWatch but if I did I'd want to use it for golf GPS, running GPS, and that's about it. Problem is, I'd need to lug around an iPhone which sucks as I don't want that much weight on me when I run but I think it's an interesting product and will promote competition.

iOS 8.0.2 is working pretty well on iPhone 6 Plus. There is one bug I find annoying, which is Siri will not play or download music from iTunes in the Cloud.

I don't know why iOS8 turned south...

I'd been running the DP versions since June, and they'd worked pretty good. Seemed really solid by July/August. Then the GM came out, and it all went downhill.

Not reliable, especially on the older devices, like iPad2. Lots of app crashes, crawling, and unresponsiveness, even after a clean install.

I'm not in a good state right now...

I've got an iPad that is only half responsive, and an old 2009 Macbook Pro that either kernel panics with video (Flash, Silverlight, HTML5 after an undetermined length of time) in Mavericks since 10.9.5, or dual boot in to Yosemite, and have the same exact kernel panic issue.

Really looking for some stability Apple.
