IOS 8 for Ipad 2 NO NO NO

Has created a slow glitchy crashy ipad. I would suggest that Apple allow for a path back to the previous OS for owners of older equipment. They erred in encouraging the update....even Microsoft has facilitated down grading for their customers.

Still on 7.1.2 on my 5S and Retina Mini until 8 is Jailbroken. I will stay that way until then. I sold my Air on 7.1.2 so the new owner could JB if he wanted.

More likely the 46% figure from last week was inflated. 8.0.1 also likely hurt adoption. As for me, I am using 8.0.2 on my iPhone 6 (obviously) but have held off on updating my iPad since my employer, having been burned 2 years in a row by updates crashing our enterprise applications, told us to hold off. My guess is that well see adoption rates start picking up again in a few weeks once the rest of the major bugs are fixed.

Seems strange that the massive amount of iPhone 6/+ models hasn't changed that adoption statistic.

:apple:

I have a cellular iPad 2 on iOS 7.1.1 and an iPod Touch 5 on iOS 7.1.2.

The iPad runs perfectly fine on iOS 7 and I've no plans to upgrade it as I don't think iOS 8 offers any benefits for that model. Since I have 11 GB of available space, I'm careful to turn on airplane mode when I charge it overnight just to avoid an unwanted download, courtesy of Apple.

The Touch has been my canary in a coal mine when it comes to iOS upgrades, but I'm holding off for now.

Could be that my only experience with iOS 8 will be on a new iPad - depending on what Apple introduces later this month.

Having read a few more posts, I agree the space requirements are another big reason. We might have the same issue next year with Apple sticking with a 16GB base model but the mid-range now being at 64 GB should help. My mother called me to ask how to make room for iOS 8 on a 16GB iPhone 5, and I suspect a lot of people aren't aware of how to use iTunes now that it is no longer required.

Hah! I upgraded a week before release, and yes, there's been glitches, but nothing too critical. Most of them disappeared once developers updated their apps.
What I did wrong was to update too quickly to iCloud Drive, which later forced me to upgrade to Yosemite on my 2007 MBP. On it, I just had an issue with TimeMachine, which I was able to solve after intensive research. Then to my surprise, everything else seems to be working OK, even I can make phone calls from my MBP using FaceTime (I thought this wasn't possible on my Mac !?). Anyways, it works, so I'm not complaining.
I've never own a computer as my main computer for more than two years, but this Mac has been setting records for several years already.

Free space... but also SLOWWWWWW!

I'm guessing that people not having enough space is part of the problem, but I'd guess the quick ramp up and now stagnation might be more due to people who've upgraded a bit older devices have heard it's pretty horrible on performance.

I upgraded my iPad 2 (I'm always the guinea pig for the family), and while I like a couple of the features, it's painfully slow compared to 7. We've got a couple iPad minis that will probably stay on 7 until Apple fixes it (if possible) or there is some compelling reason to make the move.

The only good news is that my apps still perform decently while I'm in the apps. It's just launching, moving between apps, gestures, etc that are many MANY times slower than before.

Pretty much working great on my 5s 16GB. There are a couple of minor bugs, like once a day the touch interface stops responding but is easily fixed by simply sleeping and waking the phone, but those minor bugs are well worth the huge benefit I've gotten from iOS 8's enabling of T-Mobile WiFi-calling. There are some other niceties in iOS 8 also, like Health.app, cool new features in Messages, better functionality in Notes, etc., but the WiFi-calling feature is the killer app for iOS 8.

That's not the OS's fault. The app developers need to fix and/or update their app to support iOS 8.

It sure as heck is. Why do the apps need to be updated to support somthing as BASIC as landscape rotation? Even Apple's own iOS 8.0.2 Messaging app is broken with regards to rotation. STILL. It's pathetic it takes Apple so long to address these issues. Did they not TEST iOS 8 before releasing it? SO MANY people have rotation bugs.

So, again, who's fault is it?

Yeah... its not because of bugs.. It is because people do not know anything about their phones, and the vast majority just let that red 1 sit on their setting app, and the people that actually try to update? They don't have 2 free gigs of space available, and they don't know how to update from their computers.

Am I a pessimist? Yes.... because I work at a technology help desk. And no one.... knows anything.

I remember several years ago, Apple stated that at that time, there were 25% of iPhone owners who had never connected their iPhone to a computer to upgrade or even backup or sync.

Remember, people were probably still used to buying phones that never saw upgrades. Back before I owned an iPhone, I had a Treo 650 that I never knew could be updated although it was only given one or two.

And you would know because you work there or know people who do? Or are you just equating bugs to employees being lazy? It couldn't be that Steve's management style of running Apple like a start up with small teams is now coming back to bite them? When Steve was running the show Apple was doing about $45B in revenues. This year will probably be close to $180B. Fact is Apple has resource issues. I've listened to many a podcast and read many blog postings from people in the know (or former Apple employees) who admit that. I mean if you exclude retail, Apple has fewer employees than Google. In the last two years iOS has probably gone through more change than in the previous 6 (excluding the App Store). IMO Apple needs to put a freeze on new features (outside of anything ready to go for the new iPads) and just focus on fixing bugs and polishing what they have.

When you look at it, Apple is VERY slim on hiring people. Though, it seems odd because the alleged salary pay grades at Apple appear to be lower than Google's salaries. If they were following supply and demand directly, the pay would be higher.

Thats because 8.0, 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 should never have been released, they've all been buggy and slow and while it hasn't been too bad for me personally, I know a lot of people who have had massive problems. Considering the large number of people on older devices its pretty bad on Apple's part. I have a feeling 8.1 will be what 8.0.x should have been.

iOS 8.0.2 a vampire after midnight, using Cellular instead of WiFi

I have two routers, an Airport Time Capsule and a Belkin.

In the day time, whenever the Macs are doing Time Machine backups, the Airport Time Capsule stops providing WiFi services, and thus automatically all WiFi devices switch to the Belkin 802.11n. I can tolerate it.

After mid-night, usually happens after 1 a.m., I notice that the iPhones and iPads appear to be connected with the Airport Time Capsule because it said so in Settings > Wi-Fi and the WiFi icon appears at the top of the screen. But without the SIM card, or when I turn off the Mobile Data, there is no way to download my magazine, browse Internet from Safari and etc. My iOS devices are not able to switch to the Belkin router. When I unplug the Airport Time Capsule, my iOS devices still have the Wi-Fi icon on screen, though the Airport Utility shows an exclamation mark inside a yellowish triangle next to the Airport Time Capsule imagery. There's no way to fix it, but about 7 a.m. in the morning, everything resumes normal and all iOS devices can access Internet via the Airport Time Capsule Wi-Fi.

It all happens after upgrading from iOS 7 to iOS 8. It is frequent when 8.0.2 is installed.

I wish a fix of it together with the performance issue will be released in iOS 8.1.

Rah, Rah, Apple! Now you can take your blindfolds off. I love the cool new feature in Messages where I can't type anything when I turn my phone to landscape mode. That's SO COOL!

Yeah... its not because of bugs.. It is because people do not know anything about their phones, and the vast majority just let that red 1 sit on their setting app, and the people that actually try to update? Am I a pessimist? Yes.... because I work at a technology help desk. And no one.... knows anything.

But isn't that what most iPhone owners are? Clueless? All the gearheads have Android. If Apple can't release an iOS that "just works" then it's "just sh&t". Isn't that why we pay SO MUCH for the device?

They don't have 2 free gigs of space available, and they don't know how to update from their computers.

You need almost 2 gigs free to update via iTunes (I think the number varies from about 1.6 to 1.8 GB depending on the model - and it's in the 5.5 to 6 GB range for over the air). I usually have just under a gig free on my 16 GB 5S (yes I DEEPLY regret not getting the 32 GB phone) and it's just not important enough to me to spend the time right now freeing up the space.
I did update my iPad 3, which now chokes if Safari has more than 10 tabs open. I know the 5S will handle it better but I'm not in a rush.
Apple is out of their minds still selling 16 GB phones now that the OS is so huge.

If people never connect their phones to iTunes, how the hell do they get their music on their phone?

You can buy from iTunes without connecting to a computer... Plus a lot of people use Pandora, Spotify, etc

Rah, Rah, Apple! Now you can take your blindfolds off. I love the cool new feature in Messages where I can't type anything when I turn my phone to landscape mode. That's SO COOL!

Okay, I get why you're frustrated, but you need to remember that not everyone has the same experience that you do. Personally, iOS 8.0.2 is running pretty smoothly for me as well. It's not wearing "blindfolds" for someone to say that it's working okay for them.

I'm totally fed up with these "updates" that add cosmetic changes and features I mostly don't care about while making the things I use every day slower, glitchier, or non-functional. How about an update that makes the hardware I already bought better? Of course not. That's why you can't "downdate". It's all designed to make you buy a new device.

There is still lag on iOS 8, just changing apps, scrolling, tabs, even when you plug your phone in with the Apple wall charger there is a 2-3 second delay before you see the battery icon to show it's charging, I never had any delay with iOS 7, the moment I plugged it into the charger it pinged that battery sound and was charging now there is a 2-3 second delay. There is lag in places there shouldn't be.

No kidding! I thought my iPad 2 was broken the other day after restarting it. It went through the startup sequence and then went blank. I hit the power button... nothing. Hit the home button... nothing. Waited like 10 seconds, hit the power button again... nothing. Maybe 20 seconds later, the screen comes up allowing me to swipe and enter my password. Even that process is laggy.

When I do the gesture to show all apps.... it takes like 3-5 seconds before I see the effects in slo-mo and they all come up. It's not just a little slow, it's crazy slow. I'm not sure the term lag even covers it!
